    I made a video not long ago welding a .050” full pen aluminum butt joint where I compared wire brushing to not as well as some other details.
    So in order to get the most out of the scrap pieces from that video, I had an idea for this video with a few more tips for tig welding aluminum.

    The term “makes it look easy” is tossed around quite a bit, but in this case, 100% deserved my friend.

    Great timing on this one, Jody! I was just sitting down frustrated from a welding job I took on, and your advice at the beginning was exactly what I needed to hear.
    Thanks for taking the time to upload!

    Thanks so much for a thin aluminum example! So few videos cover this. Also for including the settings and gear specifics. I've only needed to weld thin aluminum a few times but I find it's demanding and excellent practice for control of heat, travel speed, and adding the right amount of filler at the right time.

    Not sure if this idea has a use , maybe for even cleaner AL & Stainless - to use something like a sand blasting cabinet , fill with welding gas / bleeding out air & welding inside cabinet ?
    Been watching for a few yrs. now , getting back into welding [ started in 8th grade 1968 ] used in multiple trades , and the last few yrs. got my 1st inverter welder a Everlast Lighting MTS225 and one of you cup kits ---- Thanks again

      You can buy argon chambers. I’ve used a couple welding 15CDV6 motorsport drivetrain parts. Really clean to weld in but also very awkward. Like you it’s like welding with your hands in a blasting cabinet

    Excellent advice! I have been watching welding vids for the last 15 or so years and this is only the second or third time I've gotten a notification mentioning anything about this specific thing that nobody hardly learns anymore. Great that you make "The Main Thing" about each different weld a mantra future welders can remember easily. Thank you!

    Assumptions. The tacks look different because of argon flowing through the open joint allowing Ar to do some cleaning action on the back.

      I was wondering about that but didn't know why it happened, and I'll bet you're right. I do remember reading (and I think Jody has mentioned) that the presence of argon is needed for the etching that removes the oxide.

    Using 2mm aircraft sheet alum for hydro-pressure molding-getting the full penetration is so essential. Not getting full penetration could cost the guy blowing up your weld his life.

    • @dereklloyd527
      @dereklloyd527 2 месяца назад +2

      Isn't aircraft alum usually 7000 series and is normally riveted and not weldable?

    • @viscache1
      @viscache1 2 месяца назад +2

      @@dereklloyd527 =if you’re welding in the 7000 AL your hear and using TIG ONLY is incredibly important. Too cold and penetration is low too hot and it cools brittle, you might as well have used cast iron.. all I can say is run a few hundred beads, lay out 100 cards in different alloys and learn all you can. But yes, 7000 is not flexible enough in many cases and when the molding process is finished the weld id cut out and it’s riveted, screwed and bolted to the airframe so that there are no stress fractures. The misnomer about aircraft grade AL being not weldable is because runway maintenance cant’ have a welder out there while the jet is being filled with jet fuel on the tarmac and some minor repairs are done on the fly by shooting some rivets and tacking down a panel before a flight or even during boarding…three cheers for modern cost saving maintenance…also welds in 7000 tend to fracture with vibration…rivets are better for long term flying

    Thanks Jody. Great teaching. I get the #5 cup but why use a collet body in the torch instead of gas lens? Is it because the kit didn't have a lens?

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  2 месяца назад +1

      I think both standard collet body and gas lens in #5 size work equally well. But some people have a preference for standard collet body for aluminum. The kit I used is only standard collet body

    Do you find aluminum needs to be chemically etched (removing the oxide) prior to tig welding??

    • @tommys2979
      @tommys2979 2 месяца назад +4

      Not necescarily chemical but grind it clean, use an aluminum wirebrush not steel and the ac function on the welder helps clean that layer off as well.

      Right around the 3 minute mark take a look around the arc. See how its kinda funny fuzzy lookin? Thats that oxide layer burning away.

    • @Yzerbruh
      @Yzerbruh 2 месяца назад +3

      Welding in AC cleans the oxide layer on the negative and melts the aluminium. All you need to do is get the surface layer clean, so acetone and a brusing with an aluminium brush that hasn't been used on other metals should suffice. You can grind the surface around the weld, but it isn't always needed.

    • @benz-share9058
      @benz-share9058 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Yzerbruh I believe it's sometimes called "cathodic etching" and the argon envelope of TIG welding is part of the process in this case. Electrochemistry that's beyond my understanding but it works!
