As a Caro Kann player I have seen many of these pawn storms. I love when my opponent gives me an umbrella pawn. But you do need to be careful if they have an effective attack coming on the diagonals sometimes you weaken your own position too much. With your pawns on the white squares in a diagonal and your king also on a white square it's pretty difficult to get in quickly he probably would have needed to bring up one of his other pawns. Thanks for the interesting breakdown. Pawn play can be some of the trickiest to figure out
I combine what I learn here with openings from GothamChess, learning traps from Remote Chess Academy and various tips from ChessTalk. It’s helped me jump my rapid ELO from 600 to 1200 in about 5 months. These 4 chess RUclips channels are the best in my opinion.
dude this guy has all video that are on point, like this one i always panic seeing a pawn storm and other videos like bishop pinning knight . you are really good at finding related topics. thanks a lot
I appreciate the videos, I learned how to play when I was young but never got the proper coaching so I've been working from the ground up using RUclips and books for my coaching. It's a bit harder when you've been taught wrong versus no teaching at all.
Thanks Nelson, I am 1500 FIDE and my big weakness is breaking down to kingside attacks, I'll try to keep this gem in my mind! Keep up the good work and have a nice day :)
Great lesson! Thank you! Question: I watch IM John Bartholomew and on this subject he has recommended that you don’t push your own pawns when dealing with a pawn storm. From what I understand, he says it’s better to make your opponents work for the forced pawn breaks. Maybe it’s possible you get more activation and get an attack going with your minor/major pieces while they are storming the pawns? Is this an instance where the position calls for h5 blockade?
In Fianchetto positions as black, pawn to h5 is often necessary when dealing with a pawn storm. Their attack is usually a little quicker because of your g6 pawn.
@Dustin It could also be a mutual pawn race. Sometimes it is just one checkmate move differ from both sides. (Like mate on g7 for withe, or b2 for black). When I was a kid, we used to joke about it: "Hey, white begins... so if you checkmate me and I can do the same the move after as black, it is a draw!" O;-
Awesome video, thanks for all the super useful tips! Out of curiosity at 4:20 I'm wondering if Bxh4 is a good idea or not. It's not like it brings anything particularly great to the table, other than a free pawn, and maybe there are risks of opening the g file in front of the king IDK... Although we can ignore and king-block the g4 pawn if it takes the g5 pawn and use our g6 pawn to protect the bishop maybe? Making it a little outpost? I was just wondering.
Could you possibly do something on considering bishop play throughout the game with the emphasis on good vs bad bishop. Also is it a good idea for lower rates players to deliberately ignore their usual preference for knights and learn how to value bishops more obviously considering the position. Just an idea as I can't recall you doing a bishop video CHEERS
Perfect. I got smurfed on yesterday (probably accidental, not a lot of blitz games on his accound, but 500 rating points above me in rapid) and guy pawn-stormed me to death leaving my King with just one pawn to hide behind and no good way to defend against all the checks without getting forked.
I much prefer this type of video where you give a concrete game you played recently to explain a general point, rather than videos where you vaguely try to show the idea
I always go for Sämisch against KID, but I play f3 on move 3. If you go d4 Nf6, c4 g6, then f3 kinda avoids the Grünfeld. My reason to do it this way is that I don't understand the Grünfeld at all, so I learned just this Anti-Grünfeld system and I play that way. So far the Sämisch has given me lots of victories as white.
04:10 15 h4, Bxh4 16 Qh6! Threatning mate on g7 and if Bishop returns to f6 to block, it is mate on h7. Only move for black is 16... f6 while white wins the bishop after 17 Qxh4.

I'm maybe three minutes in and already I'm just hearing "So in summary, after 7 hours this guy is going to get slammed by this bishop but anyway instead of all that he decides to play knight to e2 and the game continues" chess really is just a game of "how well can you beat someone up in your mind"
you probably already know the answer, but just in case - en passant isn't possible here, it's only possible if the pawn moves 2 square (so black pawn should go from g7 to G5, not from g6 to g5 as shown in the video)
this has to be the slow and nastiest tactic in chess ever, I just played a game with a guy from France, he locked down my whole position in 3 lines, my Queen was locked, my Rooks were threatened my bishops had to sit on corners overall it was a damage to me, fortunately that guy didn't knew the endgame, so it turned out to be a draw.
Great video, I learned a lot. By the way, please continue to not include the eval bar in these instructional videos as that only serves to cloud one's thinking. Much better to practice evaluating positions based on the elements of Time, Space, Material, Pawn Structure and King Safety. Players don't have access to an eval bar during games, unless they are cheating, so it is a good idea for aspiring players and even spectators not to become addicted to it.
You must have been shocked to see your opponent could mate you with all these options when doing the game review.. Whilst watching the vid I considered the queen sac, but its just one of those things you dismiss right away in a blitz game..
Looking at the thumbnail, if I’m black there I’m thinking ‘welp I’m prolly bout to get killed but at least I have these sick bishops in case I survive’
Issue is after bishop takes h4, white has queen h6 threatening mate on g7, you basically have to bring the Bishop back to f6 to block his bishop, then their attack continues, gxh is viable, even the rook sac followed by lining the light squared bishop up on d3 looks viable

Hello! What is your elo?
@@santiagofrankenberg8094 I'm currently sitting at 1009. So take Nelson's advice over mine 😂
Just got into chess, really love your presentation style, can’t wait to apply ideas you share here
Great channel. His video on principals are his best I’m my opinion.
Nooooo you'll be addicted!

Hell no
Yes
hell yes please
Please don't do that, lets keep the human analysis
Thanks for the content! I’m barely pushing 1400 and I learn tactics from you. Love this stuff!
How has the rating been a year later?
So many useful takeaways from this video!!! Thanks Nelson!
Thanks for the video, I lost to pawn storms many times and couldn't find a video that explained how to defend it well.
Big thanks for this channel. I'm a low level player who's been stuck in a rut. Listening to your thought process has made an immediate impact.
Wooow
I spotted Qxg5
I can understand pawn Strom it extremely hard to defend

Great video on surviving pawn storm. Thanks sir Nelson.
Thanks for the idea! I always struggle in opposite side castling games and you gave me a tool to kind of delay the attack by a few moves

CHEERS
Wonderful ability to explain without wasting time. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge, Nelson.
Will definitely keep in mind. Yes we learnt something new. Thanks for your patience in teaching us
Thanks Nelson, great video, I hope this prevents the panic attacks when being pawn stormed in my future games 😁
great video nelson!
Liked this tip a lot! Sacrificing pawns is nothing compared to having open lines of attack on your opponent’s king!
This is the video I needed. Most players don’t know how to defend their king especially in openings like the pirc and the KID
Your training is superior... well done youg padawan

Good video on defensive technique
At the time (4:48):
I would play:
Kg7, g×h5, Rh8
But I don't know, if that is good.
@Jan Interesting idea! It would only give white a slight advantage after 15 g4 Kg7 16 gxh5 Rh8 17 hxg6 fxg6 18 h5 Bxd4 19 Qxd4+ Qf6 20 h6+ Kf7!
Thank you.
Great job I enjoyed your video. Love it.

Been watching CV for a few months now. My game has reenergized.
nice idea, I'll have to remember g5
Nice game - thanks!
I always somehow get mated in bullet because of pawn storms, thanks a lot for the instructive video
With pawn storms you can defend by trading
starts at 0:37
I spotted Qxg5 almost immediately. The guy should've seen it. Probably nervous from playing Nelson

It seems like black could still play Qxg5 after Kh8?
Ah yes, the umbrella pawn
Great tecnique
At the start of the pawn storm, what prevented you from just taking the h pawn with the bishop queen battery?
04:10 15 h4, Bxh4 16 Qh6!
Threatning mate on g7 and if Bishop returns to f6 to block, it is mate on h7.

Thanks so much i just lost two games because i didnt know how to defend my opponents attacks

No problem! Thank you!
I have a question. Why in 10:10 position Black couldn't just take the pawn with his bishop?

Ra5+, Kc1, R×a6, Rh1, Q×h1, R×h1+, Kg7
winning a rook.
The text line with Rf7 also wins a rook as showed.
How do i have a board like yours? mine is just a normal one

Thanks, great stuff, but even I saw that discovered check in the end right away, and I am 1000, not 2100 like your opponent!

Thank you NM Nelson!
So in other words, once castled, you never take the pawns opposite your king. Is this always true?
Not always, but a lot of the time. There's always exceptions to the principles in chess though.
Best way is to block them, if possible.
Reding tip: "Die Blockade" by Aron Nimzowitsch.
If pawns are storming your king, and he's stuck in his castle, you just need to have him ride out with Aragorn.
Why not take the free pawn at h4 with the bishop... I might be missing something though...,🙂
I'm maybe three minutes in and already I'm just hearing

You probably wont get this comment but tks Nelson...could have used an hour ago but is imprinted in my brain now.
He could have still brought down Yuit’s queen because you bishop was pinned
