    Actually, most XP-compatible games run with the extended kernel (or not even, many just need an XInput DLL that is left out of the distribution for win2k plus a couple of XP DLLs). I have successfully run Tropico 4 and Democracy 3; GTA IV and Crysis are also known to work. Photoshop CS6 and Vegas Pro 10 (after renaming the error reporter exe) also work fully and do make use of all 12 threads in my workstation.
    Just be careful if you have something like a Nehalem CPU or above and standby in win2k. The OS stops sending HLT commands to the CPU after returning from standby and as such could get very hot (a Xeon X5670 running constantly at 77 C is bad news). I've tried RMClock and loading XP's CPU driver, nothing has worked. :'(
    but yeah, the music is good!!

    I have watched this video like 10 times in the past year, it was a very-well made video on real hardware which makes it even more exciting. Have you considered making a new updated one to reflect the Windows Update issues, as well as exploring websites and deeper benchmarking data? I have also heard of some universal kernels to emulate newer versions of Windows like Windows 10, not sure if there is anything legit/true there, but would be interesting to find out more about.

    IMPORTANT: the extended kernel version 30 corrupts my system32
    iched20.dll!! Many programs including VLC would not install until I replaced it with a riched20.dll from my windows XP installation! If you are getting installer crashes, or complaints about MSVCR90.DLL, you must replace the corrupted riched20.dll (dated july 2015) with one from a working 2000 or XP installation!

    • @I430VX
      @I430VX  3 года назад

      I cannot speak for your case of a corrupted riched20.dll, but in any other case, including any of my installs, errors about msvcr90.dll means you must install the Visual C runtime.

    • @lolfunnycp
      @lolfunnycp 3 года назад

      @@I430VX that is a good point, I thought that was the issue at first, but the Visual C 2008 installer (that you linked) also threw a MSVCR90.DLL error when I first tried it! I tried both with and without the compatibility launcher... but only patching riched20.dll allowed Visual C 2008 to install properly! Now that I think of it, I had installed 2000 from a 3rd party iso with all the updates slipstreamed, so maybe that had a corrupted riched20.dll rather than the extended kernel 🤔

    If you want to use Windows 2000/XP as you main OS, maybe consider instead of installing it on modern hardware to install a lightweight Linux distro, installing VirtualBox, installing 2000 in a VM, and setting up Linux to automatically start the VM when the OS boots. This eliminates the trouble you'll have finding drivers for modern hardware.

With one such machine and a modern pc, you would have a way to play almost any game, either natively or through emulation/ virtual machines.

    Well unfortunately this video did not work for me. I'm using a Dell Latitude D620, and everything went smoothly up until the kernel install. After that it takes about 5 times as long to boot up (no big deal), but the real dealbreaker was it broke the Wi-Fi driver, telling me it couldn't find any compatible WLAN cards. I installed the Windows XP version of the driver (which I think is the same), that worked until I rebooted and it went back to not detecting the WLAN adapter. I couldn't install Boingo either, it threw a random error number 2894. Since the only reason I attempted KernelEx is to use MyPal, I guess I just accept that XP is the earliest OS I can use the Internet on.
    Also, every single direct download link in your description doesn't work due to a RUclips issue: it will bring up the "This site may be harmful" page and when you click "Go to site" it just does nothing. You have to right-click the "Go to site" button and copy the link address, then paste manually, at least on Chrome.
    Awesome work with the tutorial and your website though, truly appreciate people like you keeping old computers useful and out of the landfill!

    I tried follwing your update video but I kept getting errors about missing 'MSVCR90.dll' but I had already done some things before so I assumed it was OK. After installing the kernelEx and restarting windows took a long time to get to the logon screen and now says 'The system cannot log you on now because the domain [my user] is not available.' Is my system lost? It's only a virtual machine, but I would still like to know if it can be fixed.

    WIndows 2000 SP4 installation media/iso to prevent having to install the services pack 4 directly. To get that, either Slipstream SP4 directly into the Original Install CD, and then burn that as a new bootable CD. There are bootable SP4 installation isos (CD image) that can be downloaded form places like winworld.com since it is such a older OS.

    You should mention the importance of the Unofficial Service Pack 5.1. It's critical that some machines have it otherwise BlackWingCat's KernelEX will bork the installation.

      @@I430VX That happened to me as well, USP 5.1 has certain pre-requisites in order to be safely installed and it's a right pain in the ass to work out what those requirements are... Until you see a whole bunch of forum threads outlining them at 3 in the morning and facepalm violently...
      From what I've seen, USP 5.1 is important on a fair few multi-core machines as it deploys certain patches that allow Windows 2000 to utilize 2 or more cores correctly, in addition to a thermal control KB that allows a multi-core system to run at an acceptable temperature. Supposedly the only other way to properly install these patches without too much run-around is HFS-Slip which the vast majority of users will not be inclined to use.
      As for Kernelex, on higher performing multi-core computers, without USP5.1 will stop the installation from booting correctly by stalling at the login screen where it's supposed to be loading your session.
      In hindsight it might be a little bit overly specific but it may be worth leaving a side-note in the description of your video. I'm sure the folks at MSFN would be willing to help in a heartbeat too.
      Thanks for reaching out to me though. Your video inspired me to do yet another Windows 2000 installation on modern hardware for old time's sake. You're right about it being a daily driver operating system!

    Hey Man, I was thinking of asking you an interesting question about a Windows 2000 game with Quake 1 Engine called "Urban Mercenary".... Because in the Windows 2000 I once had I could see a playable map (all white I think for a reading code) and the lights became white hanging on the ceiling and with the grate, while now that map is always the same, but original gray and brown with blue lights? In the past not too long ago, I had tried to play the second version of the game on another PC with Windows XP from running .rar files, and a similar thing happened making my whole map blank but without merging or manipulating objects, this was on the last map, but since I've always had another Windows XP (fixed), and I still play both versions, I don't understand why this reading method doesn't come out also from my Windows XP PC (laptop ), where the textures are colored... It's not like you can help me, my goal is to make the first white map reappear with the lights hanging, I also remember in 2005 that at the end of the map the screen was rotated, do you think it was of a reading error, was it a map taken from the internet (although I remember never playing on the internet in 2005), or is it the windows version? I beg you, for years I've been trying to find a solution! 🙏🏻🪐

    I used W2K on my so called Media Server. It is a P3 600 MHz with 1 Gig of RAM. It contains a database, a modified Version of serviio, which connects to that database and a jsp Application on Tomcat, which is used to search for movie titles. Currently I try to migrate all these mentioned Services to Linux mint and got it done.
    But getting things done in Linux needs a lot more effort. Much more deep diving into the subject, most things on the command line, no graphical tools. Specially for old PC's with Pentium 3 or 4 one core: W2K performs better,boots faster, compared to a Linux Distro like Mint 18.3 Sylvia with xfce desktop. The desktop type you chose will have an impact on performance.

      Good question. I know ClamWin AV works and is still updated for 2000, but i do not know of any others that get program+AV definitions updates. As for firewalls, there must be something out there, but I've never worried as my router has one built-in.

      Avast 8 works and I believe it still gets definitions. For firewalls, there is Kerio 2.1.5 and Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6, but the former can be a little buggy.

    Do we have a kernelEX for win xp and 7 things are starting to break. I have got replies from support people telling me they can't build their software XP compatible using latest version of Visual Studio. For example road blocks like procedure entry point GetTickCount64 missing in kernal32.dll when run under XP or confusion like github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/issues/3158 .

    • @win3276
      @win3276 4 года назад +2

      XP has XomPie (wrapper library) and One-Core-API (kernel extensions). Nothing for 7 but something is in the works for Vista.
      GetTickCount64 can be replaced with GetTickCount, provided you do not need to run the program for more than 49.7 days.
