From the photo taken as Puffin was alongside the rescue/fishing vessel, the mast appears to have broken at the lower spreaders as there is a tall stump of mast remaining that appears to be supported by the lower shrouds, and a jury rig might have been possible using that tall stump.

you simply miss the point...in the next 2,10, 20 years..Ian and others will be inspired by the whole story...so..excited to see he has his films and he gets some more...there is ZERO money in it for GGR or jane and me, but may be for Ian ..so?? it is actually part of the story reminding him to capture the moment ...jane and I invest personal money into the GGR ...we get none out. :) cause we love what it does.. :)

Ian sounded surprisingly chipper, good to hear his voice. Looking at the photo of Puffin alongside the fishing vessel before being cut away is devastating. Brilliant rescue coordination, and execution by the Taiwanese fleet, honoring the tradition of the sea.

A GA was smiling on Ian. Just a harrowing experience, enough for a lifetime of stories. Can't wait to hear a debrief and hope to hear how future preps could work to avoid losing the mast. It always seems to drill down on how to keep from losing the mast, because it seems the boat itself continues floating long after abandoning, none the worse for wear. Hope GGR passes on really useful info on storm prep and tactics. It's done a good enough job so far in pre-race inspections of the boats, but more tech details would have been even better. Thinking of Elliot Smith's issues with forestay, forestem fitting, pulpit, top o' the mast problems, all avoidable if looked at with a marine engineer's eye, sted of a looksee. Mast intact, Smith had the gumption surely, but a weak piece of cheap metal was probably the root of the problems. Jones obviously had a thousand percent much much better prepared boat, but as Kipling said, "the sea is always the sea." I think he said that, didn't he. If not, he should've.
