My daughter took Music Appreciation her senior year and it was like cheating. Since she grew up listening to everything, she could name everything i grew up on along with classical, musicals, and music from my mom's generation. The teacher was blown away she knew all the music.
I graduated high school in 1975. I consider the 80s my school years due to the music. I was dancing with my best friend in front of the TV watching MTV. What a great music decade!
I think with the massive resurgence of Running Up That Hill is the reason Kate Bush is finally being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year in the class of 2023. She’s deserved it for a long time and I’m glad she is finally getting her flowers. Thank you Stranger Things!

@@n.d.m.515 Her style of music is influential and influences people in the rock genre. You don’t have to be a hard core rock and roller to deserve getting into the hall of fame. The type of music that you put out may influence different genres including rock music. Bush is an example of doing just that. Just like Dolly Parton or Public Enemy rock is an umbrella that celebrates everyone that’s been influential. That’s how I see it anyway. Hope you enjoy your day.
@@kellifranklin9872 I don't see it that way at all and neither does very many rock enthusiasts. She is good at what she does, but that doesn't make her a rock musician.
I've always held an affection for 80's music. It all felt so universal. Naturally, it started with U.S. artists, but I began to enjoy other artists too (e.g., Genesis, Yes, Tears For Fears, Naked Eyes, Men At Work, etc.). When GTA Vice City came out it reignited the spark, particularly to a new generation. Sometimes I miss things like "Friday Night Videos", the hype of waiting to see the next MJ video, Hall & Oates. Man, those memories...you just can't time-stamp good music.
Sweet Dreams was also included in X-Men: Apocalypse when Quicksilver (spoilers ahead) saves the entire mansion full of kids and other mutants from an explosion except for Havok, who was closest to the blast. The way it starts at the moment that a bee is hovering above a flower and Quicksilver "freezes time" because he senses the explosion, is just perfect.
As a person who lived through the 80’s, I am happy to see that our music has lasted or re-emerged to give the younger generation a taste of our good music!
I trust no one who doesn't crank up and sing along with "Livin' on a Prayer" whenever it comes on the radio. It's the ultimate '80s arena rock anthem. I don't care how cheesy it is, if you're not down with that cheese, I am not down with you. Anyway, this list is perfection. These songs all deserve to be remembered.
That's because the song is technically cursed. It's one of the top songs of all time known to bring bad luck. I know it sounds like a superstition, but a lot of people have had severe bad luck by simply being in the presence of this particular song.
@@Starflare5 what do you mean by "simply being in the presence of"? Like the sheet music, a CD, playing on Spotify, humming it, singing it in the shower, walking down the street and belting it out. If it's walking down the street and belting it out, I'm pretty sure more people have had bad luck belting out Bieber tunes. If you consider being punched in the face by strangers bad luck. Not supporting violence, just what I've heard. It's all an urban legend. And the song is not about someone drowning. Phil Collins has made it plain that he never witnessed anyone drowning, the song is not about any event, and he wrote the song while going through a divorce and it's tone and meaning are likely subconsciously related to that.
80s pop has an undeniable vibe about them which has been passing on from generation to generation. My playlist has a wide range of collection from 80s music.
Boy george Do you really want to hurt me. Bronski beat - smalltown boy Psychedelic furs love my way . Two massive omissions… both should probably be in the TOP 5. Police… Every Breath You Take. The song has been covered and sampled so many times… and has one of the most recognizable riffs ever. One publication claims it’s the most played song in the history of radio. Never stopped being popular from its release in 1983. Prince: 1999. Huge resurgence in the late 90’s (obviously). Still a popular 80’s hit to this day.
Careless Whisper is so misunderstood song. It's played in a lot of wedding parties, where neither the bride nor the groom understands the true meaning of the song, which is very obvious if you listen carefully to the lyrics. It's taken as a highly romantic song, thanks to the sax, whereas the song is actually about a really nasty and sad breakup. George Michael wrote it when he was 17! At that age he was capable of writing so deep song that you're left wondering what happened.
Many of these never lost popularity due to being constantly played in sporting events, karaoke bars, & others: Livin' on a Prayer, Eye of the Tiger, Sweet Child o' Mine, Don't Stop Believin', etc...
During the 80s we fought for more than most today will never experience. That's why the 80s music is the way it is. We stood true to ourselves and that created a nationwide unity, something that doesn't exist today. Today it's to follow the crowd, no matter if bad or good but mostly bad, we didn't follow any crowds. Each of us had our own voice and we were heard. We lived the American Dream. Today there is no American Dream only sadness, fear and depression. But the 80s was ours and we lived the 80s like there was no tomorrow.
As a kid of the 80's songs from then and the 90's reminds me of when kids could be kids. Taking off for hours with the parents enjoying the kids being gone, kids drinking from the garden hose or water faucet. Biking around randomly or looking to see what house had who's bikes at it... LOL... Last month I was talking to a friend how the 90's was a end to "Free range kids"... Gen X rocks!
@@tylerriley2587 I remember the mtv debut. Me and my friend were watching the first video. Video killed the radio star. It’s interesting that mtv kinda killed the music videos with its trash tv shows. I thought the 80’s were the best. Loved it.
A list of pure 80's nostalgia. It certainly hit me right in the feels as most of those songs are in my all time favourites along with the people that performed them.
"Eye of the Tiger" is quite a story in itself. Stallone wanted to use "Another One Bites the Dust" for a Rocky movie (III, I think) but couldn't come to terms with Queen. As for Survivor: 1. Survivor had released two albums, neither of which had done particularly well, and we were worried our label was going to drop us. One day I came home, pressed play on the answering machine and I heard: “Yo Jim, give me a call, it’s Sylvester Stallone." - _Jim Peterik, former keyboardist_ 2. "When we were writing Tiger, I was living with a friend, renting a room for $150 a month and he was waiving the rent half the time. The guitar I played on the song had a broken headstock. I couldn’t afford another one so I glued it back together." Sly said: “It doesn’t have balls. I don’t care what the hell you do, I want it to kick ass.” All I did was push the faders up a single decibel and, boom, you could feel the difference. It was kicking and he loved it. He said: “Print it!” I told him: “But that’s the demo!” Sly said: “I don’t give a fuck what it is.” A week after the film came out I was driving on the freeway and I heard it on the radio. I switched over and I heard it on another station. I switched again and heard it on a third station, and then I pulled over because it was one of those moments I never wanted to forget. Did we know it was going to go to No 1 in the US for six weeks, and to No 1 in 29 other countries? No, course not, but I felt in my gut that people were going to relate to the song because it’s about getting your ass out of bed. - _Frankie Sullivan, guitarist_
Every Breath You Take by Sting (with the Police), released in 1983, is a classic that drfinitely should have been incuded on this list. It rears its head every once in a while. Like when Robert Downey Jr. sang a duet with Sting, directed toward the titular character in the 1990s tv show, Ally McBeal.
They used that song in Australia in the 90s for one of the free-to-air TV stations' theme song. So I heard it very often and agree that it should have been on the list.
No need, actually the List said Songs that got popular again and Sting, Every breath you take is not that got popular again but it is an all time popular song.
A friend and I (we both were teens in the 80's) recently had a discussion about which one song defines each decade the best. I picked Take on Me for the 1980's. Brit/new wave (I know they were Norwegian), keyboards, iconic MTV play video and song you can try to sing to (but never quite hit those high notes). The song was absolutely perfect for the time.
I was born in 1979 😁 - so grew up into 80's music ..... absolutely love it !! ... Love time after time ...and don't you forget about me.... Awesome tunes .... Kate bush is one of my favourite. ❤
The 80s are my favorite genre and the orginals are always far better. My only exception is how different Aha's slow version of their "Take on me" song is. How the same words bring on a completely different set of emotions are awe inspiring. Truly amazing. These songs never get old even when I do.
Completely agree!! I can't think of another song where an acoustic, unplugged treatment transformed the meaning of the song more than a-ha's Take On Me. I love both versions equally, but the slower, ballad version will bring a tear to my eye. For context, I distinctly remember when the original came out, my sister got the album - and I think I killed it!
@@EchoesDaBear I would have put "Take on Me" higher on this list. Itt pops up everywhere these days (including a few months ago in The Last of Us),, and the acoustic version has actually brought me to tears in two separate productions (Deadpool 2 and the TV series "The Magicians"). Even the music video itself is often referenced and mimicked. I feel like the clip in this video didn't come close to doing it justice.
Kate Bush is such a queen, I'm delighted that she received recognition 37 years after the song was first released. GLOW also used the same tune to memorable effect.
It was also recently used in a recent episode of the Nickelodeon kid show danger force ( season 3 episode 4 : Guardians of the ponytail) I thought that was kind of funny
I know of a couple covers from her songs. Within Temptation did an opera metal version of Running Up That Hill and Gregorian also did that song. Pat Benetar did a cover of Wuthering Heights. But, i like Kate Bush's versions better. Kate has a music box-like voice and it is so soothing. I dont know why she makes me think she looks like Beverly Crusher from Star Trek though.
The thing with running up that hill is that it's used thorughout the season. The final scene with that song basically has some of the best acting I've ever seen so it reached inside of us deep. I think that also helped the song. That kid can act her heart out
I'd put Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place on Earth" on this list. When Black Mirror was at it's most popular this song played in the episode "San Junipero" which is a lot of peoples favorite episode or in their top few. As someone who grew up in the 90s I didn't remember this song much, but it's now in my top 5, listen to it all the time, I assume others do too.
A lot of us who came of age then that episode was extremely emotional. It really was a method to do that when I die I would definitely do it I even know the Beach town😊
I'm definitely biased because I was a teenager in the 80s, but that decade produced great songs that still hold up - more than any other decade, I believe.
@@sabinabysabinaphotography6316 Musically, it definitely was. But the fear of a world-ending nuclear war was a bit of a downer. Maybe that's one of the reasons why the music was so good - the artists had to get their inspiration out before we all became dust.
@@KuriusOranj I don't know about that, but I will say they were certainly less PC and it helped a lot. The movies used to be funny and music was much better than now, where they seem to use the same formula for all of them. Now, it seems like they can't come up with any original ideas. Sequels for Top Gun, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, etc.... Where is the new stuff?
Making anyone listen to Rick Ashley and Michael Bolton "music" is cruel and unusual punishment. It's against the Geneva accords. Their music is HORRIBLE!
If there was ever another list of this, I wonder if "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)" by Dead or Alive would fall under this category? I do, however, think this is a very solid list, and that all the songs on it are deserving of the recognition they're getting. "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley definitely deserves its spot on this list, since its resurgence in popularity refuses to fade, and Rick Rolling is still a fun pastime.
I was in High School from 1984- 1988 and I loved all these songs. I remember when you could call the local radio station and have a song played for the girl you were dating. I so so miss the 1980's.
“I Wanna Dance with Somebody” was in the movie “Isn’t It Romantic” and “True” was literally in an 80’s based movie called “The Wedding Singer.” But I’m shocked that you didn’t have any songs from Duran Duran who were literally 80’s darlings! Quite literally any Duran Duran song would do but here are a few of my favorites: “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Wild Boys,” and “The Reflex.”
Considering that Duran Duran was created as a money-making machine for the record company, that group had tremendous talent and wrote a wide variety of truly excellent songs. Not my favourite band from the era, but one that definitely has my respect.
'Mr Blue Sky' by Electric Light Orchestra. It's been used in other things, but it reached peak resurgence when it was featured in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.
Fun fact: Jim Steinman wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for a musical version of Dracula -- specifically, a stage play based on the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu." That play was never produced, but the song went on to be included in a musical based on an entirely different vampire film: "The Fearless Vampire Killers, aka Dance of the Vampires."
Jim Steinman also wrote "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" which became a huge hit for Air Supply in the 80s. If I'm not mistaken, some Air Supply songs were also used in several movies.
Time after time" this song is timeless because for 40 years, it continued to be covered by several artists and even until today Cyndi Lauper continues to sing it.
In the 80s we had the freedom to say whatever we wanted, insult whomever got on our nerves, and express ourselves however we deemed necessary. THAT freedom was why we had THE BEST music, THE BEST movies, and THE BEST TV.
So many of these I listened to from my childhood to early adulthood starting in my dad's truck on tapes, CDs or the radio and dancing to at college and house parties... good times!
Can't believe that Tears for Fears 'Mad World' didn't make the list, especially after the Michael Andrews and Gary Jules version sky rocketed up the charts. Also how could you miss the golden opportunity to show Dax Shepard & Kristen Bell's hilarious Toto Africa video?!?!
I've always loved the imagery of the lyrics in Total Eclipse of the Heart. "We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks." Such a great description of a relationship with too much passion.
Love love love these songs! To add another fact to the list for 'Don't you Forget About Me,' Matchbox Twenty has closed their concerts with a stellar cover of the song. 'Eye of the Tiger' was also used in an episode of 'Supernatural' both during the show and at the end with Dean Winchester lip-syncing and playing air guitar. 'Family Guy' was mentioned for the song, but I want to remind people that they also used 'Don't Stop Believin' as well.
A flock of seagulls space age love song should make a comeback. It's so futuristic. I had goosebumps first time listening to it. It has been my favourite song till now.
I started to comment about the fact that Master of Puppets didn't make this list, until I realized that it never lost its popularity. Still love that a whole new generation gets to experience it for the first time.
Yes and no. Metal is quite a small niche product for younger generation. I was never able to interest my daughters into anything heavier/harder than Nirvana. And then came Stanger Things... Now my 13 year old is shredding Master of Puppets on my strat...
Whitney was heaven sent and we were lucky enough to have her in our lives, I guess maybe it could be true like another old song, only the good die young. Great video 👍.
I remember all these! The world seemed much easier then! I realize i may have been young, but compared to what kids have to grow through now, it was a cake walk! And the music what such a huge part of it!

Yeah I was disappointed that Supernatural didn't get a mention there. It was a meme for a while there too - Jensen's outtake rendition.
Born 4/75 and the 80's songs are still my favorites. I keep them on my play list and raised my girls on them ❤
My daughter took Music Appreciation her senior year and it was like cheating.
There’s a thousand other bands that deserve it that till aren’t inducted, it’s the hall of shame because it’s a shame bands aren’t there that belong
@@justinjones1507 I agree with you completely. There’s only 7 music artists inductees a class. I wish there were about 50 more artists and groups that I love being inducted already. I just hope for the best and appreciate when they get it right every once in a while. Kate Bush is a W imho.
Except she isn't rock. She is pop and experimental.
Bruh can't believe they mentioned suckerpunch instead of this 🤦
Disappointed they didn’t play that clip. That was the best part of the movie
That’s one of my favorite parts from any X-Men movie!
Sweet Dreams glorifies drug abuse. I've always hated it. And nobody can convince me it doesn't.
@@DavidRay_40 In fact Annie Lennox express her frustration about a recording&music industry there. But you do not have to believe me.
Actually that's Welcome to the Jungle
The 80s arena rock anthem
Im actually surprised they missed "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. That song has been EVERYWHERE for years
Miami Vice ❤
That's because the song is technically cursed. It's one of the top songs of all time known to bring bad luck. I know it sounds like a superstition, but a lot of people have had severe bad luck by simply being in the presence of this particular song.
@@Starflare5 never heard that before, I don't believe that is true
It didn't get popular again. It never stopped being.
These are the anthems of our youth!! The 80s and 90’s will never go out with a whimper!! 🤘🎧

The Cure Love Song
The Cure Lullaby .
That’s late 70s, but I loved the Police too as well as Sting.
How do you know it's misunderstood?
Curse you Rick Astley and your infectious grooves. Your music never failed to get stuck in our heads.
Especially "Never Gonna Give You Up".
Family Guy
I was one of those DJs playing Rick Astley, back in the 80s and everyone got up to dance to him.
I DISAGREE. I'M FROM THE EIGHTIES AND I ENJOY RICK ASTLEY SONGS TILL TODAY. I'M NOT SAYING HIS SONGS ARE THE BEST, I'M JUST SAYING I LIKE THEM
I'm a child of the 80's all but one of those songs were in my cassette tapes back in the day and still are in my 80s best of playlist on Spotify.
Many of these never lost popularity due to being constantly played in sporting events, karaoke bars, & others: Livin' on a Prayer, Eye of the Tiger, Sweet Child o' Mine, Don't Stop Believin', etc...
It happens here in Brazil too
@@mariolole8261 All over the world.
Oh, it wasn't just an American thing, it was the same everywhere.
We who grew up in the sixties say the same. It's not wrong, for either generation. Times were definitely different.
@@57Strudel Just sad everything seems to have been lost somewhere. But I guess we can all say I remember when.
You are so 💯 it hasn't been the same since then
Being a teen in the '80's of course I LOVE ALL THE MUSIC of that era. Brings back amazing memories!
Given that "Master of Puppets" by Metallica also regained popularity through Stranger Things, I'm surprised it doesn't feature on this list
I 100% agree with you on this!
RIP, Eddie. 😢
Personally also the best 80s song wich had a revival

I am not even really a fan of Metallica, but that scene....🤌❤
These songs will never be out of style. Too iconic❤
1980s, my most favorite decade and also part of my childhood. 😊
Also, the introduction to MTV music videos, and Brooke shields 1982 was probably the best year
@@tylerriley2587 I remember the mtv debut.
As for Survivor:
1. Survivor had released two albums, neither of which had done particularly well, and we were worried our label was going to drop us. One day I came home, pressed play on the answering machine and I heard: “Yo Jim, give me a call, it’s Sylvester Stallone." - _Jim Peterik, former keyboardist_
2. "When we were writing Tiger, I was living with a friend, renting a room for $150 a month and he was waiving the rent half the time. The guitar I played on the song had a broken headstock. I couldn’t afford another one so I glued it back together."
Sly said: “It doesn’t have balls. I don’t care what the hell you do, I want it to kick ass.” All I did was push the faders up a single decibel and, boom, you could feel the difference. It was kicking and he loved it. He said: “Print it!” I told him: “But that’s the demo!” Sly said: “I don’t give a fuck what it is.”
A week after the film came out I was driving on the freeway and I heard it on the radio.
80’s has the best music. I make my 10 year old daughter listen to the 80’s station on Pandora anytime she’s with me in the car and she LOVES it!
Born in the 70's, grew up in the 80's and got older in the 90's, no decade will be as good for songs as what the 80's was, the greatest decade ever.
The 80s were awesome.
Same... The 80s were awesome!
Yeah, I agree with you
Journey never gets old. It’s the best relaxing music. Remakes are sacrilege
"Time after time" was also used in movie "Strictly Ballroom" by Baz Luhrmann, it's pity you forgot that one! It's classic
I could listen to Take on Me on repeat all day. The video (back when MTV had them) was so fascinated as a kid lol. This list brings back my childhood.
If anyone ever forced me to pick my all-time #1 favorite song, I'd have a hard time not picking "Take On Me."
I am surprised that they didn't mention that unplugged version from MTV.
Same. The video was such a standout
They failed to mention its inclusion in DeadPool 2.
Kate Bush is so original with her talent and vision. I am glad that this blew up again.
Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, Guns n roses, and many more...
Holy cow, the 80s were loaded
I lived thru the 80s and 80s music is timeless.
the 80's and 90's are coming back nice to know ppl are liking my music i grew up on
I was born in 1979 😁 - so grew up into 80's music ..... absolutely love it !! ... Love time after time ...and don't you forget about me.... Awesome tunes .... Kate bush is one of my favourite. ❤
Also born in 1979 but listened to mostly 60s/70s and top 40
Tears for Fears comes back more than once. That's why I'm going to see them live this year❤
“Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Together Forever” are my favorite songs from Rick Astley, and I’m glad people enjoy the first one as much as I do
I also enjoy both the songs. As Taylor Swift would say, late the haters hate.
I however will be moving and grooving to the music.
@@Kinson007 amen
I saw him in concert a few months ago. He toured with NKOTB. He still sounds amazing!
I still can’t believe a skinny guy like Rick Astley has such a bombastic voice like that.
A couple of my cousins were on the big 2017 solar eclipse cruise where Bonnie Tyler sang her signature song.
And now Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder on the Dancefloor, originally released on December 2001, became popular again because of 2023 film Saltburn.
Mentioning Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams, but not mentioning Disturbed's cover of Shout is honestly outrageous.
I was born in 1984 and I deeply love all this hits. ❤ 80s will always be the best in my heart.
June 1984 ☝☝☝☝
I'm also an 1984 child. I dare say it is one of the best years in music.
Nice. I was born in 2007, and even I truly believe the 80s was the best decade for music
I graduated high school in 1984. 😂😂
March 84 here.
Well when a song is that bad there's always a place for it. It's right next to that Friday song from that Rebecca chick a while back.
It was used in a Promo for a Wrestlemania Match between HBK and Undertaker but it was a cover version of Running up that Hill
LOOOOOOOOVE Kate Bush! ❤
The thing with running up that hill is that it's used thorughout the season. The final scene with that song basically has some of the best acting I've ever seen so it reached inside of us deep. I think that also helped the song. That kid can act her heart out
they missed "Mad World" also by Tears for Fears
There was already a tears for fears’ song.
That was my all time favorite Black Mirror episode until I saw Loch Henry.
The use of "Heaven is a Place.." in that episode was perfect. Suddenly, I found myself crying for joy
I've seen a lot of episodes of David Letterman and the most beautiful woman I saw on his show was BC.
That episode had all the feels. And then with that song at the end it was just perfect. I've watched the episode about 20 times.
A lot of us who came of age then that episode was extremely emotional. It really was a method to do that when I die I would definitely do it I even know the Beach town😊
#13 - "Eye of The Tiger" was one of the best Supernatural songs/moments .
I'm definitely biased because I was a teenager in the 80s, but that decade produced great songs that still hold up - more than any other decade, I believe.
It was great being a teenager in the 80's❣️
Did we just get rickrolled at the start?
Making anyone listen to Rick Ashley and Michael Bolton "music" is cruel and unusual punishment. It's against the Geneva accords. Their music is HORRIBLE!
The memes dead don’t get too excited
These songs take me back to my childhood and teenage years. I still sing them to my kids, lol. Long live the 80s!
80s music is some of the best music of all time.
Preach, though 90's and 00's music are also incredibly catchy!
I always listen to the 80’s music and I love 80’s movies too ❤
I was in High School from 1984- 1988 and I loved all these songs. I remember when you could call the local radio station and have a song played for the girl you were dating. I so so miss the 1980's.
At least the 80’s aren’t forgotten for being a generation of best music
The largest swath of time with the greatest music was 1980 to 2010. The 1980s was unmatched on every level.
Duranies for life ❤
This video brought a smile to my face. As a 54 year old man, I have danced to, sang to, made out to ALL of these songs!
1974 - 1984, arguably the best ten years of music ever …. and I challenge any nay-sayers to a clackers competition 😂
'Mr Blue Sky' by Electric Light Orchestra. It's been used in other things, but it reached peak resurgence when it was featured in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.
That's a great song. It came out in the '70s, though.
It was also used in a Doctor Who episode to excellent effect.

The movie "Ready Player One" had a great playlist, mostly 80's pop!
Best soundtrack ever!
It also showed up in at least one soap opera, I think it had Rick Springfield singing the male part.
"Heaven" of german band U96 is strongly inspired by "Time After Time".
In the 80s we had the freedom to say whatever we wanted, insult whomever got on our nerves, and express ourselves however we deemed necessary.
THAT freedom was why we had THE BEST music, THE BEST movies, and THE BEST TV.
So many of these I listened to from my childhood to early adulthood starting in my dad's truck on tapes, CDs or the radio and dancing to at college and house parties... good times!
Oh, we literally ❤ the ‘80s. 😊
Real music never dies.
I thought that would be no.1 but it didn't even chart
I think so too
I've always loved the imagery of the lyrics in Total Eclipse of the Heart.
I would also say Tarzan Boy by Baltimora and Cult of Personality by Living Colour made a comeback because of wrestlers Jungleboy and CM Punk
