    Thank you! I didn't know I had to set it up with just one repeat... With more than one you just get a pretty annoying squeeky feedback kinda sound. Works great now.

    Great video and perfect explanation! Another cool thing to do is add a little bit of EQ whether brightening or cutting highs on the return track so on every repeat it gets brighter or warmer. Thanks for sharing!

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  4 года назад +1

      Absolutely, but this delay has that built in, it's a great way to get the repeats sounding the way you want though, if your delay doesn't have it already. I do like to send the return to a reverb though. I have another delay that's a dirty digital, I really like it, but you can't feedback and build up the repeats, running through the mixer fixes that problem though. Thanks for checking the video, Dubmaster, keep jammin!

    Neat! I've been hearing this sound lately in Dub music, and wondering how it is done. The delay is almost gone, then it comes right back. The closest I came was turning the delay feedback up nearly all the way and using a Band Pass Filter on the repeats. This is much more simple than I thought.

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  3 года назад

      Yes, this works great, you can shape the repeats with the eq on the mixer. The benefit is not having to move your hands off the mixer to control the feedback, and the eq, if you don’t have a filter on your delay.

    I just tried this out because I know that it's the proper or more traditional way of using feedback in dub.
    I must admit, I didn't like how my Volante turned out. The feedback sounds different. It's like it doesn't get affected by the age knob on the Volante or something. The repeats also gets a little too loud for my taste. Then I can set the feedback on the mixer higher. But then it rund away to early for my taste.
    On the unit itself I feel like I have more control. The feedback stays put. Probably because I set the unit up to even the feedback signal out straight after I got it. I can have the feedback all way up wothout it ever getting dangerous. There might be a limiter inbuild.
    But yeah, the tone of the repeats also reflects the age on Volante.
    But I also have a Deluxe Memory Boy with a Behringer VD400 in its inbuild feedback loop, and for that an overall feedback control on the mixer seems to be a more controlled solution :)

    Thank you. Do you have any recommendations for a hardware reverb?

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  3 года назад +2

      Sorry, I didn’t get a notification of this comment. In the end it would depend on your budget. I like my Lexicon MX400 as it’s a configurable dual unit. It also has delays. So I can run a mono reverb for drums, a mono delay and a stereo delay for other instruments, or 2 different stereo reverbs.

    • @updown5238
      @updown5238 3 года назад

      Ah okay, you have the send set post-fader and are using the fader to control how much of the signal you send to the delay 👍🏾

    • @updown5238
      @updown5238 3 года назад

      And returning the delay via the aux return on that channel 15?

      Just watching your video again, I’m picking it up thanks again!

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  3 года назад +1

      Post fader send, yes. I don’t have aux returns. Use a normal channel for the return as you need to be able to send it to the same unit. So say aux 4 out from any channel, returned on channel 15 with aux 4 turned up to get the basic delay you want, then feedback amount is controlled with the fader.

  • @patkelly8309
    @patkelly8309 3 года назад

    Hi. Would this principle work the same with a virtual set-up? (software mixer and vst's) Still post-fade? thank you.

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  3 года назад

      Very few DAWs allow you to make a feedback loop. You’d have to try it with yours. It’ll generally give you a warning if you try it. You may not have the option to send the output back to the same effect channel, or it may let you know that you can’t do it. Try it and see, with no sound playing, just check for the routing. Bless

    Can you recommend a similar mixing desk (since yours is not sold anymore). I cant figure out what to look for.. i need aux sends and aux returns to have a similar setup? Many thanks!

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад

      It depends on whether you have an audio interface to break out your channels or if you want to use the mixer as your interface. If you have an interface then you’re only limited by your budget, there are plenty of options from every company that makes mixers. If you need to use the mixer as the interface, like I do, then I think Soundcraft is one of the few options that provides multi channel over ISB, MTK 12 or 22.

      @@JahServant i see, if i can i would like to combine the two.. simplify my setup seems like a good idea. Why did you choose to not to have a seperate interface?

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад +1

      @@jellewever1225 I liked the features of this mixer so I decided to buy it. I figured that if I wasn’t happy with the firewire interface built in then I could still always add an interface anyways. It would get me going still and get audio in and out of my DAW. I haven’t felt the need to add an interface is all, I’m happy with the performance of the mixer as an interface.

    You would get better and much less degrading echo loops if you used an Echo unit that has 4 dbu line level ins and outs, your pedal fx is instrument level and makes you gain more on your preamps on the desk and degrades the echoes in the aux feedback loop very fast. Yamaha D1500 and similar used fx are cheaper than most pedals nowdays, they just sound much better when put in aux FB loop and has 4dbu line levels that match with the mixing desk. I went as far as removing all preamps in the loop route to acheive longer non degradable loops!

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад

      This unit has a switch on the back to select instrument or line level. The degrading you are hearing is designed and built in to the unit. Tape and drum type echoes degrade the sound, and this is designed to do the same.

    • @PrimarijusDoktorHeba

      @@JahServant Is it really 4dbu instrument level what does the spec say? In that case its a super pedal :) Btw thanks for the video its great and easy to follow to learn to make the move which is foundation of dub for me. Bless!

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад

      I assume so, this is what they say about it.
      Volante offers an input level switch to work perfectly with a variety of input sources.
      Set the switch to the INST position when using a guitar level input.
      Set to LINE when using Volante in the effects loop of a guitar amp, or when driving Volante with a hot output from a synth or mixer insert.
      The LINE input mode is also perfect for using Volante as a send effect or insert effect in the studio.

      @@JahServant They say its a line level but cant find anything about its inputs and outputs reference line levels (what line level cause there are different ones and all are called line levels) and how to set those to match the desk. My El Capistan is the same and I clip it easy with my desk which is sign that it operates in lower line level -10dbv probbably but Styrmon dont state it which is the consumer line reference level same as many tape machines synths and such. I love El capistan and still use it but with a workarround. I am able to send lower line level signal due to old desk I have and by soldering the cablöes diferently from my aux sends to the fx and not clip it entering the fx and on the way back I use my Motu soundcard io24 to jump back to +4dbu thru it and than back to the return channel on the desk via another output from my soundcard (same as you would connect synths via soundcard to daw) which is +4dbu line level that my desk operates in. If you have soundcard that can switch between -10dbv and +4 dbu line levels on inputs than test to the FX is like you have now straigt from the desk and from fx to soundcard first input set to -10 dbv and back to fx via +4dbu output on soundcard back to return channel on the desk so 3 cables. I hear more groundnoise from the fx but it works alot healhier and much less gain needed on return channel on the desk, had like 85% gain before and now when levels match 40% and that leaves more room on the fader aswell for longer echoes before it gets this dentist drill sound :) Anyway I struggeled alot with linelevels and thats why wanted to share this. Bless!

    I was hoping the video was going to show how to catch one word that a singer or toaster is saying and then echo just that word. Pointless showing how to echo a drum loops. Even when doing a simple snare hit dub engineers would add some reverb or flange to the echo sound.

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  Год назад

      You raise the send to the delay on the word that you want to send and then lower it.
