if this song doesn't touch your soul, then you don't have one.... In answer to Syd's question, yes we all miss him... Rest in Paradise Roger Keith Barrett 1946-2006
Syd wasnt a drug wasted or spent force, he was an artist, a sage, a bard, a shaman. What he was not was a rock and roller. Nick Mason recently did an interview and said Syd didnt want to be in a rock and roll band, practice songs and put on shows to please fans, he wanted to experiment and push the limits, and take drugs, and they wanted to be a successful rock and roll band.
I think this the first post that Ive commented on, longer than a decade. I enjoyed reading ur thoughts about Syd. There are many of us, that are misunderstood, Syd (to my intuition) being one of them. Thanks for speaking up for those who are not able! 1💜
I identify with this song. 'Won't you miss me' means to me that even our best friends won't miss us in truth. That when we die, life goes on. And then what? Grieve still? Nope...you just go on. So no , they don't miss you. That's how I feel about Syd's wonderful lyrics and music, and hell this kind of realism is what might have drove him crazy. I love the guy. I love that his shit is hard to 'get'. I love that even I don't know - for I am probably wrong.
I like that you like "his shit is hard to get", and even better you realize you most likely still don't get it. A song like this can be taken many different ways to many different people I feel, which I know from reading many books on Syd that he felt that was important in making a good song. emotions and various interpretation to the listener. = great art
@buzz magister Yes, this was my point about the realism here. That most people fail to see the subtlety of our connectedness. Syd sinks in over time. And the acceptance of that which drives you mad makes you eventually well again. Hope is a thing we have to build into the fabric of our existence, it's a waiting game and the seeds of Syd were lain. I hope that in the future people will see that we are all a part of the same mind. I would hope that people see that ripples are photons firing and that photons firing act mysteriously as waves. We are connected. We are alone. We are undefined until observed. Each one of us depends upon the other. Connected for sure! In hopeless times. It's a waiting game... Respect.
@@knickd1979 Syd is like a divine revelation. You gotta let it sink in. You don't go write a bible about the thing. You wait. Then you wait some more. It lives with you... Art is observation put simply. Great Art through history usually contains the observations that most people of the day missed. Art seeks truth. Truth is hard to pin down. Enquiry is all we have, and it is the best of things.
He did that with Baby Lemonade as well.. look for the 'Peel Sessions' version of Baby Lemonade it will blow you away.. I dont think Rog and David wanted to help Syd so much as make a few bucks and trash him at the same time.. JUST saying..
We all miss you, Syd. I'm sitting at an airport, waiting for my flight. It's 07/07, your death anniversary. Just leaving my thought out there in the universe, it's always felt like you were my friend.
this is the proof that good music stays good music forever, this song is 51 years old and people still like it :) Syd's might have gone, but his memory is still alive and present on today's world.
Reading Comfortably Numb - Mark Blake and was really touched by this passage from Sue Kingsford, a friend from Cambridge. "i can remember us tripping one night in Cromwell Road, and Syd, who hadnt said a word for hours, suddenly asked, "Are you going home this weekend? i told him i was, and he replied, "Do you know, thats all i want to do. I just want to go home". Im already in 1974 on the book but i just keep thinking of that phrase.... I think Syd did have a certain breakdown, but it was not just because of drugs but because of all the expectation and the fear of not managing to be succesful, while also i think he didnt really want to become a professional musician, he started because it was interesting and a new thing really, but after the initial success the expectations for new songs and etc while everyone putting different pressures on him was just too much. In the end he wanted to escape it all. And he did. But the book also doesnt forgets to mention that there were many worse cases around, and a lot of them chose the easy escape route... (killing themselves). One other worthy passage is when David Gilmour says about when he helped Syd with his Barret record in 1970... He offered Syd a drive home from the studio, and in the car he didnt say a word. But when leaving it midway to his door he turned around to David and said a simple "Thank you". Which David said was so strange as it had never happened before... Really, every Pink Floyd fan has got to read that book... im loving it completely.
Artists and mystics are rarely recognized in life. Roger Waters I feel is the real tyrant in this story and his smear job will become common knowledge-hopefully before he is no longer here to see it. David Gilmour seems to have true remorse and has led on to this with statements like "when you are young, one tends to be brutal and perhaps we were a bit callous to Syd" which is him admitting they scrapped him to become successful sell out musicians.

I understand that people grow And often grow apart
But why did it have to be you When I had given you my heart
I held inside my feelings Never told you how I feel
I know this could be real You have a special something I just can't figure out But I know that it could work That's what love's about
I'll keep inside my feelings I just can't let you know
