- Before buying a diatonic harmonica, we must be aware about different tunings in which it is available. Especially if one is planning to buy for playing Bollywood songs.
For years, I tried to understand diatonic harmonica and gave up finally. Today I found a gem of 13 minutes 57 seconds.

Thank you very much for the informative video. I personally like the tone of Tremolo and Octave harmonicas which were used in most of the Hindi songs of 50s and 60s but never knew the difference between the Richter and Solo tuning. Thanks for the explanation. I would appreciate if you would have a video on Tremolo and Octave harmonicas some time in future.

सर आपने मार्गदर्शन करने के लिये बहुतही सही टॉपिक चुना है. मैंने भी यह प्रॉब्लेम फेस किया था. और मैंने सिडेल का 10 होलवाला सोलो ट्यून हारमोनिका खरीदा था. लेकिन मुझे उसमें सही आॅक्टेव नहीं मिले थे. उसमें C3 और C4 पुरे आॅक्टेव मिले. लेकिन C5 आॅक्टेव के चार नोट मिले. उससे मैं गाना तो बजा लेता था. लेकिन अपने भारतीय गाने उससे अच्छे नहीं बजते थे. फिर मैं नंदू सरसे मिला तो उन्होने मुझे बताया की उस हारमोनिका में क्या खामियां है. और मुझे कौनसा हारमोनिका खरीदना चाहिये यह भी बताया. उन्हीका डिझाईन किया और बनाया हुआ 10 होलवाला डायटोनिक हारमोनिका मैने खरीदा. और मुझे बताने में बडी खुशी होती है की. उनके बनाये हारमोनिका में C4 और C5 यह दोनो आॅक्टेव पुरे मिले और C6 आॅक्टेव के चार नोट मिले. ईसपर अपने भारतीय गाने अच्छी तरह से बजते है. और उस हारमोनिका की साऊंड क्वालिटी बहुत ही अच्छी है. वह हारमोनिका खरीदनेसे मेरा काफी सारा पैसा भी बच गया. आपने नंदू सरका जिक्र किया इसके लिए आपको धन्यवाद देना चाहूंगा. नंदू सर एक अच्छे और नेकदिल ईन्सान है. आपने यह व्हिडिओ बनाया इसके लिए शतशः धन्यवाद. आपके हर व्हिडिओ में सीखने जैसा बहुत कुछ रहता है.

Excellent information Doordarshi ji. I also got confused while playing the title Hai apna dil to awara. I noted that this can be played on Hero tremolo harmonica which is not expensive at all. You are right that Seydel is a good brand at par with Hohner.

You can play all the notes in a diatonic. You should know how to bend notes. Diatonics are awesome just because you can do bends. If you are good at bending, you can play all chromatic notes across 3 octaves.

Sir the same confusion is there in Tremolo harmonica e.g.. Oceanstar.. Please make a video on that because ppl usually buy Tremolo thinking it's similar to tower harmonica without the slider but the entire layout seems to be different. Can you please let us know the reason for the different layout on Tremolo

In ritcher tune diatonic harp if you know how to bend & overblw the notes you can use all ten holes without any problem, but bending technique is not so easy to play for everyone.
Bending is not easy and not accurate also

As you correctly said i checked my 10 hole diatonic hohner it is richter scale tuning only by playing. But there is no sign on it which tuning?

Sir you’ve not included hole#8,9,10.
8= E6- D6, 9= G6- F6 & 10= C7- A6.
In other words diagonal configuration.
This is common in Chromatic 10 hole also. Only B6 is missing. This makes possible to play nearly all songs of 12 holes. Matter of getting used to.

Thank you Sir. You have clarified my doubt. I faced same problem. I have 4 diatonic harmonicas. I faced same problem in all the 4 and got fade up with them. Now I will search solo tuned or orchestra tuned diatonic harmonicas. If you can tell where it is available it will be a great help.

बहुत बहुत ज्ञान वर्धक, महोदय मेरे पास गोल्डन मेलोडी १० होल हार्मोनिका है । मगर इसकी धुन की कुछ लिमिट है । Now as u suggesested for solosit tuning , is there any difference between १० and १२ holes harmonica. As the cost of 10 and 12 holes is very different. Can 10 holes solo tuning cover all bollywood song. I am interested in sydel harmonica
No, a diatonic can never cover all the songs. U need to have a chromatic

Sir please explain something about Hohner Marine Band 364 s-c soloist, where they claim that all tunes of all the three octaves are available in this (8 tunes each in 3 octaves = total 48 tunes) .

My follow up question is, between solo tuned and orchestra tuned diatonics, which would you recommend ? Or should one buy a 12 hole diatonic wirh orchestra tuning, so that one gets 10 holes free with solo tuning ?
I prefer solo tuned though both are good. 12 hole solo tuned is also good option. Practically orchestra tuned doesn't give any additional advantage for playing Bollywood songs, rather causes confusion sometimes. That was just my experiance.
