So teachers in Korean don't spend the necessary time on things like how to pronounce z and r. Sorry don't have Hangul on my phone. 감사합니다 🙏 I was searching for this after realized I was pronouncing ㄹ like the Spanish r, and in words like 빨리 was staring to roll the two together like a Spanish "rr"! Seeing the tongue placement was super helpful to correct that.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this... I take it this lesson is for leading with ㄹ only? Let's say for example what if I say 물? For this word when I sound ㅜ my tongue is already down, and now I need to follow with ㄹ sound. For this the only direction left is to go is back up (reverse from leading). Finally the other one that is still stumping me is the typical object marker 를. From this lesson I start with 르 just like what you showed us, but then what happens to ㄹ 받침? Does the tongue come back up to palette at this point? Thanks again, I was confused about the leading case.

My only suggestion would be to include the sound at the end of a word next time. This video covered the ㄹ sound at the beginning and middle of words, but not the end, as in 말, 재발, or 헐. It was a very good video! I really appreciate how you demonstrated the tongue positions clearly. Could you make a video like this for 으, please?
I had a similar question, and I asked my native speaking friend this... I'll share his answer "so when it's lead, the tongue needs to be rolling down just like the video shows and when you say ㄹ like 물, it rolls up to the celling of the mouth. Hope it makes sense!"

Exactly the explanation I was looking for! Hailey, you are wonderful! I taught music in schools for many years and play saxophone, so I can hear the subtle differences between ‘ㄹ’ ‘R’ and ‘L’ but couldn’t get it correctly. “아리랑” (Arirang) is a song I would teach my classes that was very difficult because ‘ㄹ‘ is translated as ‘r’. Since the American English ‘r’ is similar to ‘ㄱ’ tongue position without the tongue touching the palate, my little singers could not sing this song very accurately. With your detailed explanation, I understand why ‘ㄹ‘ will sound subtly different in this song depending on the other letters around it and where it is in the syllable. Thank you! You are amazing!

I would say this is literally the best video ever seen in pronouncing ㄹ. I don't think this video could have done any better when pronouncing ㄹ. The only thing, though is that I do wish words ending with ㄹ should've been covered. Many Americans (including myself of course) struggle pronouncing words like 월.

Maybe it's my ears, but the "L" sounds more often than not just like a "western L" to me. Is there anything else going on other than the tongue position / movement? 🤔 I have no problem distinguishing the "R" and "L" sound.

Hailey, how would you spell and pronounce my name in Korean?
In English I usually simplify it and spell it Bjorn Hakon, but in Norwegian it is spelled Bjørn Håkon. The ø and å are Scandinavian letters and the ø is pronounced somewhat like the i in Sir, and the å somewhat like the o in oral (actually, I would say awe, but that's pronounced differently in different parts of the English speaking world). The j is pronounced like the y in you, not like the j in John. The rn in Bjørn is pronounced pretty much like the rn in barn. The o in Håkon is a "hopeless" sound for English speakers, but not for Koreans (I believe). It's pronounced like the initial sound in wh words like where, why, when. Start saying the wh word and the very first sound that comes from your mouth, before you come to the vowel, that's the sound you want. That's a Norwegian o, or German u for that matter, it's the same sound.
Ok, folks, I tried to keep this simple and if I didn't succeed, it's because I'm not a brilliant teacher like Hailey. No, seriously, I mean it.
Great job! The best way to teach a pronunciation is to go back to the phonetics, specifying tongue and mouth positions as well as other vocal modifications. After all there are so many existing concepts in phonetics, why don't we learn a bit to easy our study.
I'd enjoy a video about the differences between ㅜ ㅡ, ㅓ ㅗ, ㅐㅔ, I always try to guess how a word is written based on what I hear, and I mistake those sounds :(
