    I'll add to your last hot take and say that not everyone WANTS something crocheted/knitted/crafted. Like you said, some folks just don't get it, or don't fully appreciate the love and effort that goes into hand-crafted presents. I have some family members and friends who wouldn't be over the moon excited to receive something from me that was hand-made, where others absolutely would love that. It's one of those situations where people don't appreciate the time and effort it takes to make stuff.

    Here's another hot take for those that don't craft. Do not expect that you're getting a handmade birthday or Christmas present. Some crofters simply might not want to or feel overly pressured to make items for such occasions. Also don't co tonally ask for them to make you something when they have already said no

  • @JoyECB
    @JoyECB 3 месяца назад +5

    I do chain 3 then join and use that as a magic circle crocheting over the end, cause you can close it like a magic ring but it’s way sturdier. A magic ring being only one thread of yarn seems so fragile to me. Having a chain for the start of a granny square for exemple, maybe to make a blanket, I’m sure the blanket holds up in the washing machine. I wouldn’t be so confident with granny squares made out of just a magic ring. I do use magic rings for plushies tho 😂

    Creators are not obligated to share a pattern with you, but they shouldn't be telling people not to try and figure it out. I've seen creators trying to shame someone for making their own version of something that wasn't that original to begin with.
    I also feel like people asking for a pattern is a compliment. They are saying your item looks so good they would pay to make one themselves.

    On the undercharging point, i agree to an extent ultimately it does hurt other creators because you crash the market value and begin making people think that our work is worth less than it really is. On another note i feel like the crochet trend thats happened has created a lot of low quality creators who are almost all using the same patterns and using low quality materials and then charge the same as the creators who have far more experience and are making their own patterns and using high quality materials. Crochet imo needs to be priced based on what the product is worth and if that doesn’t match up with how hard you worked then dont sell the product instead sell the pattern or keep it for yourself to enjoy.

      @Desaundrea I'll also say, choose your hook weight. The wooden ones grip the yarn a little more so they are better for slippery yarn. They are the lightest of the main 3 types.
      Resin is in the middle weight wise, they have a good slide but are fragile so beware of that.
      Heaviest of the three is the metal, they slide the best and are durable. A lot of people like them for their weight, say they help with hand pain.

      I use a piece pf acrylic or cotton, make it into a circle and do my sc around the strands with chenille yarn. I then cinche close it. There are two massive advantages to doing that.
      1. It works seamlessly, no more chenille yarn breaking trying to close the ring.
      2. You then tightly knot the ends of the acrylic with the end of the chenille and it secures it really well, it absolutely won't budge.

    FROM THE TOP: Leggy Frogs, could make one 💯%, but I don’t think they are cute either. A turtle however is on my list. I think they are cute as all get out, over rated or not. I like the “realistic” eyes. I made Lion Brand’s Boba Cow Charlie, and I gave him green eyes. I wanted him to be special. I like these type of colored safety eyes, they really can elevate an amigurumi. I learned to crochet on Susan Bates hooks when they were still made out of steel. But even with that new grip, I can’t use them anymore. I stick to my Furls and Ommi hooks or Tunisian hooks. I too wanted to master the magic ring. I learned how to make it out of a book I got at the library many years ago. I saw BagODay use the “ch 3-4 “ method and said “ But that leaves a huge hole…”. And sometimes that hole is needed for the look on granny squares. 🤷🏽‍♀️Crochet chicken nuggets…😂I have a Kawaii book with them in it 😂 I have no desire to make them 😂. My take on crochet pricing: THE PRICE IS THE PRICE, and I will not reduce my prices. I’ve never used Bernat 5-6 weight yarns. I AGREE WITH YOU ON THE PATTERN PART. Your example is my neighbor. She saw my Scarfie cardigan I made and says “So when are you making me one?” I told her when she intends to pay for it. She is the type of person that wouldn’t appreciate anything I make for her even if she pays for it 🤷🏽‍♀️.
    So if you are a “grandma” because you have been crocheting for 10 years, what would I be? I have been crocheting for 43 years out of 49….🧐😉☺️ Be nice now 😂

    I can't decide how I feel about the charging thing. From a buyer's perspective, it makes sense for something larger to cost more, even if it's simple to make. I prefer to make more complicated items in size 2 yarn that take me days to make. There's just no way that I could "charge my worth" and actually find buyers. Also, I kind of feel like it's a little presumptuous to demand that you "charge your worth" or even that a lot of people call themselves "crochet artists" when they are making really simple patterns that other people created. I feel like crochet is not super difficult. When I make a pattern, it is not all that different from when I look up a recipe and make dinner.

      Like your doll that you said took 6 hours. If that's the sort of thing you enjoy making, how could you possibly make a sustainable business selling that? I guess there are crocheters who enjoy the fast, quick patterns and can profit from it. Which, good for them. But I guess my disagreement is that if a crocheter enjoys making more complex patterns and the only way they can sell them (i.e. get them out of their house to make room for more lol) is to undercharge, them maybe that's ok?
