If your going through an aviation college the 141 helps because you will walk with an ATP with reduced hours. Otherwise you won't loose anything in a 61 and you will get your ATP at 1500 hours, restricted or otherwise. On paper 141 reduces your hour requirement but the reality is that basically no one can pass a checkride in the minimum time allowed anyway and the difference between 250 and 120 is not as much money saved as it might sound in a big part because you won't finish in the minimum time. The ATP has a laundry list of additional requirements like night and cross country time that can be hard to build as an instructor so if you just go and build your required time by flying night cross countries you will actually come out ahead. And no one is going to hire you until you have 500 hours total time except as a CFI. Insurance sucks. Another thing to consider is that a part 141 school is not any guarantee of quality, at all. I've gotten students who left 141 programs in disgust because of how poor the program was. One student who the 141 would not solo and all he needed was a signature in his book. In any program you need to evaluate the school!
My advice is get your private pilot license (PPL) part 61 trust me, and then get your instrument rating and commercial party 141 while taking all those aviation classes to qualify you for the restricted ATP ... which is basically getting only 1000 hours before moving to regional airlines versus if you do all part 61 you will have to get 1500 hours instead ...
74 Gear thanks for making this whole career as easy as possible. I’m trying to be a commercial pilot before 30, so having a RUclips mentor like you is amazing!
@@justaguy427 ha ha! Thank you for asking. Decided to stay in IT because the money is so good but I did get my private. My 18 year old son at the time was my first passenger. So I am looking to apply for the UAL "Aviate" Program for diversity pilot training, I just turned 51, been flying Microsoft Flight Simulator on and off for 25 years and as a child I had been given a cockpit tour by a UAL 747 pilot at O'Hare in 76' at the gate awaiting a departing flight to LAX, me and my plastic UAL airliner up in the window got the attention of the Captain, and honestly the was the "Best Day of My Life", (...if you never been inside a 747 cockpit, you can not relate!)... That moment changed me forever, living in Chicago off Lake Shore Drive, in a high-rise condo, all I ever did was watch aviation in my bedroom window up, watching the Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport traffic, Midway and O'Hare all day and night as the Chicago night night sky became a firefly show! Spectacular movement of lights and patterns, I have always been mesmerized by the beauty of flight, never once did I have a fear! Flying so many summers by myself as a child also had an impact, the airlines really took care of me flying "solo" and being seated right by the cockpit for every flight was always exciting leaving out of Chicago in the extreme weather! Part 141 at ATP Flight School in Waukesha, WI., would be my path choice, a condensed training indeed!
Thanks for the video. My experience of over 7(!) years from getting from PPL to CPL has had its pros and cons of part 61 and 141 schools. I started PPL in college in a 141 school. The pace was fast but you were flying and doing ground everyday, so it was very efficient. Life happened and I had to finish it up months later at a part 61, which worked out great. Same thing for Instrument; started with 141, got all the knowledge and most of the skills I needed then went to a 61 to finish. My experience is that 141 is great for meeting all the requirements (I realize 141 vs 61 are different requirements, but you still meet most) and learning the skill set for each rating. But they tend to rush you through once you meet the mins regardless of if you are ready for the checkride or not. Also, the 141 schools usually pair you with a few different instructors which can be a challenge getting into a groove. In summary: 141 and 61 are both great, just do what works for you.
I'd totally rather do a part 141, even though part 61 can be more cost effective. I like how you have the possibility to complete your training faster with 141
I did my flight school at Addison airport, in Dallas. Passed everything at 43 hours in Aug., 1978. Celia Tripp was my instructor, while also flying Corporate for Beechcraft. I Don't remember if there was a "part" designation or not. My total cost for my Private was almost $1000 total. Retired now, but still fly a little.

Seems 141 is for someone truly expecting to work as a professional pilot and looking to dive full in to training. Basically you can qualify for as it sits 6500 pell grant, 9500 student loans and 5500 perkins loans for children with poverty parents every year, classes cost about 4k-5k per year and everything else can go straight into flight hours so 16k+ and you put about 5k out of pocket per year versus putting out of pocket 20k every year to receive the ratings and everything in 2-3 years.
I'm going through a part 141 school now. What I have noticed so far is that the students who transfer in from a part 61 with their private certificate already, are struggling through instrument and commercial. They end up paying as much as the 141 because of the repeated courses and flights. I don't know what the curriculum is for 61, though I do know that the FAA requirements are the same. however, the knowledge retained from those transfer students is low. Just remember, regardless which part you choose, what you don't know can kill you up there. So study hard and retain as much as possible in all your course and flight training.

I remember almost all the regionals advertising for 1st officer positions at 500 hours tt and 50 multi engine 6 months before that regulation passed for the 1,500 or a restricted ATP. I missed the boat couldnt get the 20k in funding for other ratings but atleast the pay is up, pilot shortage and faster upgrades for everyone.
Reading some comments below stating 141 is more expensive than 61, I disagree. The mins are usually a lot lower for 141 and they keep you flying more often, less chance of getting rusty and needing additional flights to get proficient. Instrument rating alone for part 61 requires 50 hours XC time. Do the math on that one $$.
Hey Kelsey, Thank you so very much brother, This video is very helpful to me. Now I understood Part 141 and 61. As you know I have always been following your Chanel to learn, to gain more sense of my passion. I have been doing my home works on which flight school to go to. Finally, it came down to 2 academies I selected. Now you help me out to choose which one to go with. Thank again brother. Stay safe KEEP THE BLUE SIDE UP.
Sir, I was a witness to an incident involving a dual engine failure of both starboard engines of a 747 on takeoff that was amazing. I was wondering if you had heard of this particular incident. It was a charter aircraft leaving Las Vegas on a hot, over 100 degree summer day. Of course the aircraft had a full fuel load and approximately 300 souls and their luggage so they needed all the runway and all engines that day. I was an armed security employee working the private charter terminal that was the Hughes Aviation Charter Terminal where we provided service for not only private aviation but large charter aircraft. This is how I was in the position to witness first hand this incident so completely. It all started as the AC was taking off to the west and I heard a loud “BOOM.” I looked out the large plate glass windows to see the starboard side of the AC as it was just lifting off in a nose high position. I saw flames shooting out of one of the starboard engines. Realizing how dangerous this was on takeoff I made sure I maintained a visual on the AC as long as I could. When the AC went out of sight I ran to the other side of the terminal (about 100 feet) and through those large plate glass windows watched as the AC continued west over the unpopulated desert area. I was in awe as I realized that the AC was not gaining the altitude expected on a normal takeoff. I lost sight of the AC because it was so low, I thought it was going to go down! I finally saw it gaining altitude and bank left or south as it dumped fuel over the desert as it attempted to return to the airport in an emergency maneuver. It eventually gained altitude and made a safe landing. Follow up on the incident was in my mind a freaking must and the next day the AC was parked on our side of the airport for investigation by authorities and eventual repair. Turns out that one of the right side engines had blown and thrown debris out forward where some was ingested by the engine next to it causing both starboard engines to fail on take off. Again, on a very hot day, with a full load. From my experience of working in the aviation field for nearly eight years by that time (4 years U.S.A.F. and 4 civilian) I truly thought it was going to crash. I recently tried to researched this particular incident via the Internet with negative results. I wanted to learn more about it. My question to you is, do you know about it and can you help fill in the blanks like number of souls and was itva full fuel load...? Thank you, Gordon Waite.
Currently attending Eastern Kentucky University where private training is 61, and the rest is 141. I’ll be getting my R-ATP for 1000 hrs in a few years
Hi Kelsey, I just did a discovery flight. Luckily the instructor was one of my relative and he was confident enough to let me do the take off and the rest of the flight under supervision. Wasn't allowed to land due to regulations though. The take off felt amazing and I want to continue doing this for the rest of my life. I'm going to pursue this career as soon as I finish high school :)
There's no regulation that prohibits him from letting you land, it's a nice way of telling you that he's just going to do it because it's the hardest thing to learn and teach. I don't blame him. Instructors routinely let first time flyers do the takeoff and fly around. I'm very excited for you, you have an incredible future ahead, don't give up!! Do not stop!
Kelsey, as always, great video and content. I've met several pilots who bought a trainer before they began flying. They lease the plane back to the flight school while they are students and sell or upgrade once they have their certs. Maybe a video with the pros and cons since most say it's the cheapest way to learn., hourly anyway...
Hey Kelsey... loving the new intro! Also... the graphics, borrowed "clips" and editing are great! And of course, the content... on point as always. Keep up the great work :)
I will be attending "Northwest Flyers" in Schaumburg, IL in March 2020 And I can't wait. Great Location. and I have already took my introductory flight two years ago. And loved it.
Great video as usual, I was happy when I signed in and saw 74 gear had a new video lol. I’m a big fan of part 61 schools with the flexibility, in your next video how about you suggest some part 61 schools and maybe pricing estimates to go from zero hours to CPL. keep up the good work man
well putting them out as fast as I can, another flight school video coming out in a few days, so share it with your friends and let me know if you have any questions. Sooner or later I will get some videos out before you need the information!
In some countries( RU, BY) if you have have passed after school examination with good marks you can attend free higher education ( flight training),also at the end of study airlines are conducting interviews with cadets and it’s your chance to receive b737/a320 up to 777 type rating for free just from the flight school . Not everyone can do it this way , but with decent amount of brain’s elbow grease with just 100-150 hours go to the huge jet training.
I love the way you explain aviation. Very informative and to the point! You have helped me a bunch as a aspiring pilot. I start at Hillsborow Aero Academy and PCC (associates degree) this April should everything fall into place.
Yes You already answered that for me - any first job / they don’t care-part 61 or 141. I might stay part 61 all the way through. Still waiting for my solo until the weather gets better. Will tag You on Instagram
I really should have gone for a pilots licence when I (barely) had the resources to do so. actually I wish I had been closer to my maternal grandfather who was an ATC and a pilot instructor. He did some clandestine work in south America during WW2 in some sort of aviation/radio work as a civilian (his brother Bob, my great uncle flew hellcats and corsairs as a marine pilot). even at the age of 7 I had self learned the basics of flight control and aerodynamics and my grandfather actually let me briefly take control of the yoke in his twin control Cessna (obviously I could not reach the pedals lol) one of the fondest memories ever of my life.
Great video..!!! When you do the second part could you answer the age old question.. if you want to go to start to finish ASAP 141 or part 61 so there is time to have ability to slow down and understand material rather than being rushed and run the risk of failing/recycled
Thanks for your video Kelsey! Would it be better do go part 61 and get a non aviation degree for a back up plan or would going part 141 with an aviation degree look better for the airlines?
Hey, cool video! I am going to a part 141 school and it's great. While it is structured and moves fast you are able to fly part time or full time, I'm not sure that all 141 schools are like this but mine is and I think its the best of both worlds. You get the structured syllabus and you can fly when it's convenient for you.
@@74gear Yea! I kinda jumped in not knowing the differences, and I got lucky and 141 works for me. this video is exactly what I was "missing" when I tried to research the differences between 61 and 141.
@@098Matrix098 Huh. My part 141 is just a flight school so you pay as you go and there is no semester system. Do you go to a college that has a part 141 school?
Did my Private, Instrument, and some of my commercial through a Part 141 program, but it was too much government red tape for my liking. This August I’ll be attending ATP which is a Part 61 program, but highly structured without all the red tape. Restricted ATP would be cool, but 500 hours shouldn’t be too difficult as a Gold CFI with both single and multi-engine add-ons. I’ll hopefully be at the regionals in less than 2 years.
Without a doubt Kelsey! Your videos are very informative. A lot of guys and gals going through ATP are always looking for an inside perspective on the airline side.
I chose a part 61 school. Obviously it's easier since I'm my 30's and can't afford to take a few months off from work. But I would've much rather went to a 141. Financially it cost any where from 20-40k more! But when u take into account that after 250 hours you can start making money VS having to work and spend money on a part 61, I think the schools are definitely the winners in both cases but! With a 141 you can start earning money plus logging in more hours faster than a part 61. In the long run I guess you have to ask yourself are you really spending more money, or are you just redirecting your time to start making the real money faster.
My school, which is partnered with Sinclair College in Dayton Ohio, offers both versions. Currently, our schedule is 141 with emphasis on a degree seeking pathway.
Thanks for all the great information in your videos Kelsey. I love aviation and my 14 year old son has recently started flight training in a Pacer taildragger aircraft. His goal is to be an airline pilot one day.
I am a part of a Part 141 program at Lewis University so I very much like the structure of my courses and flight training. I also like the idea that I can go fly for an airline 500 hours less because it saves money that way. Very much liked the video and content of your channel. I am a big fan of 747’s so let me know if there’s an easy way to get to where you are so I can fly one in the future.
Hello Kelsey I think a part 61 because I am lonely interested in getting a private pilot license. This was a shorter video, I like the longer vids, cause I am very interested in what you talk about. All the best SHAUN of New York City

I went to a part 141 school and I thought it was a rip off. They were scheduling me for ground school that I thought it was not necessary and every debriefing I was being charged as if it was ground school. They insisted in putting me into an accelerated program so they could get more money out of me, I think. They have a catchy name "FAA" Florida Aviation Academy. Next time I go to a part 61 where I can pick my own hours and hopefully they do not require a deposit upfront.
@74 Gear, If I was stuck to the US I would prefer a 141 school based on this video(all about pain upfront for long term gain sooner than later).... but I emailed you earlier this evening talking about this and at this point in time feel the world I fought in is now my oyster.... look forward to your email reply!

Thank you,
Gordon Waite.
I forgot to add this incident occurred in the mid 1980’s!
I dont know why but I really love this guys vidoes
Great video! Good info. I’m really enjoying this channel!
I recently found your channel and really enjoy your videos. Thank you for all the good information.
happy to help, glad you liked it!
I appreciate your efforts Kesley. Keep creating good content.
I’m actually about to head into flight school in a few weeks, I’m 17 and looking to get my pilot career started!
I'm slightly long in the tooth for it, but I'm researching how to finally fulfill my dream of getting a PPL. Thank you for the info!
I’m a big fan of part 61 schools with the flexibility, in your next video how about you suggest some part 61 schools and maybe pricing estimates to go from zero hours to CPL. keep up the good work man
Also tell us your route, which flight did you go to and why (I hope this is I. Your next video too)
Definitely looking forward to the next part on this!
I needed this video last semester! Better late than never...thanks for posting.
well putting them out as fast as I can, another flight school video coming out in a few days, so share it with your friends and let me know if you have any questions. Sooner or later I will get some videos out before you need the information!
@@74gear Will definitely do and keep them coming!
Kelsey, Thank you so very much for this amazing video. This is exactly what i have been wanting to know. keep on the great work.
Great video man, always fun to watch and also it helps us understand Aviation more.
keep up the good work.👏👋
I love the way you explain aviation. Very informative and to the point! You have helped me a bunch as a aspiring pilot. I start at Hillsborow Aero Academy and PCC (associates degree) this April should everything fall into place.
New intro is looking gooooood.
Thanks for this. I'm watching it multiple times.
Thanks for that! Part 61 for me for now - because the life dictates so.
Thank you so much this was really helpful . Looking forward for the next video .
Thank you for making this video! Much appreciated !!
Part 61 all the way. Don't need to be spoon fed. And went thru all the way to ATP debt free working two jobs.
Thumbs up for good content as always! Cheers from Puerto Rico.
Kelsey, Thanks for always sharing such informative content, happy flying&safe landing :)
Thank you for all the information. I'm looking into a part 61 school need I just wanna fly, not really get paid as a career.
My school, which is partnered with Sinclair College in Dayton Ohio, offers both versions. Currently, our schedule is 141 with emphasis on a degree seeking pathway.
Thank-you! I've really enjoyed your videos and the information contained in them is very valuable; great production quality too.
Your cutaways are hilarious
Part 61 school. I want to fly a Pilatus PC 24 one day.
Thank you Kelsey - excellent info.
Thanks for all the great information in your videos Kelsey. I love aviation and my 14 year old son has recently started flight training in a Pacer taildragger aircraft. His goal is to be an airline pilot one day.
Thank you for doing this video. You really inspire me to become an airline pilot👨🏽✈️. Liked the video and subscribed to your channel!
Thank you so much for making this video. I wish I would have seen something like this two years ago.
NICE JOB ON THE CHANNEL!! I bet u will have 100k subs in 2 months or so!! Keep the videos coming👍
Thank you for those interesting information
I am a part of a Part 141 program at Lewis University so I very much like the structure of my courses and flight training. I also like the idea that I can go fly for an airline 500 hours less because it saves money that way. Very much liked the video and content of your channel. I am a big fan of 747’s so let me know if there’s an easy way to get to where you are so I can fly one in the future.
Hello Kelsey
I think a part 61 because I am lonely interested in getting a private pilot license.
This was a shorter video, I like the longer vids, cause I am very interested in what you talk about.
All the best
SHAUN of New York City
currently at riddle doing my first semester. i have a degree in AET and transferred here, my carrier goal is bush pilot. also want my A&P. im considering leaving end of my semester and flying 61 while working on A&P license. i think that way may be the best so i can get the most out of my GI bill.
I’m planning on attending a Part 141 flight school, so that I can get the most out of my GI Bill.
ya that is definitely the way to go for using your GI bill, thanks for your service Erin!
another great video
Keep up the good work ♥️♥️♥️
yeah this is a good topic. There are not 141 schools near where i live. i guess each have their pros and cons but its 61 for me.
sure thing man!
Hey Kelsey ,you are on the top notch to provide us with very useful information compared to the other you tube channels.Keep Going !Btw I am Software Engineer and planning to start PPL in mid of this year.If you have some time can you please provide me the list of tests that cover under class 3 medical. Thanks in advance .
Great video, thanks!
Awesome video! I’m in part 141
two kinds
1. the ones that rip you off
2. the ones that really rip you off
I went to a part 141 school and I thought it was a rip off.
Hey K, great info Video thanks for posting, I've been gone a few days and catching up on Vid's, be safe
My closest part 141 flight school goes through 14 subjects in just 6 months, sounds almost impossible to complete everything thoroughly without forgetting most of it.
Hello.
What do you think about Miami Dade College's "Professional Pilot Technology" Associate in Science degree?
Thanks.
Very informative !
I’m going to start a 61 school this year, have to work to pay bills but want to start flight school to change careers.
I'm just dyslexic with attention deficit disorder part 61 is the only way I can go if I went 141 my brain would melt out my ears
Thank you now I know which Universities to search for
You inspire me everyday, people tell me to give up in Aviation, but because of you I am not willing to give up in my dreams.
Hi Kelsey - I enjoy your videos - on a side note, I couldn't help but notice the RUclips Pilot creators, such as yourself, always seem to make these videos in the hotels on your trips. Goes to tell you what happens when you guys & gals are at the hotels on your layover.
So I'm an old guy, (55) about to retire from the fire service and will looking for a 141 school to accelerate my pilot training...it should be fun. Ciao for now....
I would do part 61 flight school
Hi Kelsey, I'm 51, have 10 hours of glider flying experience, I'm putting together a plan to finish some training for my PPL. Not sure what I''ll do with it. Going to watch the second video, and I'll comment with my plan there for your feedback.
Really like your videos!
thanks Gene, cool you are pursuing your dream.
Currently an Aviation Maintenance Tech for Boeing. Looking into American Flyers Mechanic-pilot co-op position to get my flight training! Has anyone went through American Flyers Academy?
Yesssss!!💯
@@74gear sweeet! I'm staying tuned👀
Eastern Kentucky university has one too
oh nice I didn't know they had a program, is that where you are studying?
74 Gear no not yet I still have a few more years of high school but it is probably where I will go and I know people who graduated and are going to school there
What about part 142 training?????
What are your thoughts on The Ohio State Universities flight program
I just signed up for a discovery flight and after watching this learned that I need to sign up with a part 61 school so thank you for this information. Can you make a video on the path I need to follow to go from discovery to an airline employee
Starting part 141 next Monday!
I use part 61 because im still in school.
Great video I think these rules are primarily for the US right?
@@Max-eu9ge Do you know CAE? What do you think???
@@Max-eu9ge Thank you! I am only 14 yrs old but want to become a pilot since I was 2. Do you know the differences between CAE and Purdue? Wich one is "better"
