I remember Sheik in 1976 at the Olympic
    fireballed John Tolos
and I was in the front row with my dad and this Sheik tried to run past , my uncle was with us , lean over the rail and punched him in the face as he passed
He stopped and screamed at the front row as my uncle Frank ( a Marine 2 tour Vietnam infantry veteran) jumped over the rail. The Sheik ran to the back. And what a mess , bottles , cups and even some shoes was thrown… this guy had heat .. great show

We went to starcast in Nashville and my buddy paid for a meet and greet and autograph with bubba/bully we see his table but he’s not there we find him hanging out at his wife’s table eating a sausage biscuit. So we walk around and do other things and go back and he’s still not at his table, where is he? He’s at someone else’s table EATING A SAUSAGE BISCUIT literally an hour and a half just waiting on him. We love him but from that point on every time we see him we say “that sausage biscuit eating Sumbitch “ to each other.

I went to the Cleveland County Fair in Cleveland County NC years ago and unbeknownst to me they had live wrestling at the fair.
Most of the guys and girls wrestling there were people you probably never heard of and most people probably never will hear of. They had 2-3 guys that they said had wrestled for WCW back in the 80s or 90s but I couldn't remember them.
I am sure that the pay off for those wrestlers was probably horrible. Maybe some of them didn't get a dime? But every one of them worked their asses off and put on the best show they could, if for nothing else, the love of professional wrestling and entertaining the fans.
There was a tag team there who had a manager that particularly stood out to me. I learned that both of the wrestlers were fire fighters for their "day job". They were heels and they had an impressive look, big strapping looking guys that looked like the kinds of guys you wouldn't want to pick a fight with and they performed well in the ring. And they really played the part of big bullying heels well in the ring and had the decent sized crowd all booing their heads off.
After the match the manager cut one of the most hilarious promos I had ever seen in all my years of watching professional wrestling. He had me laughing my ass off the whole time completely trashing the crowd and the community.
This guy kind of reminded me a lot of a mix of Jimmy Hart (with the bull horn) and you could see and hear a lot of Jim Cornette's influence with this guy.
He was talking about how easy the local women were and why half the kids in the crowd looked like they could be his kids lol. This one kid was booing and jumping up and down and hollaring at him and he told the kid to sit down because "You are so fat that if you fell over and broke your leg and had a compound fracture gravy would come squirting out!" lol. He was great!
When those guys left the ring to go back to the dressing room they walked right past me and I had to tell them they were great and had to tell that manager that he was one of the funniest most entertaining guys I ever saw and shook his hand. He was really kind of moved by that and said "Thanks, I don't very often hear nice things from the fans!" and laughed.
The heels make the world go around! And as fans we love to hate these guys and we love the abuse even when we hate it. The more we hate it, the more we love it lol.

From what I've heard, Bubba is basically an asshole in real life to a lot of people but he's pretty much living the gimmick and I think he might have mellowed a bit in age. He seems to be pretty popular with the TNA guys. He's a smart guy and always knew the right people to suck up to. Ask guys like Rene Dupree about him though and you won't get a polite answer. Dutch mentioned him giving youngsters a tough time but he could be rough on them in the ring; Rene says the reason Bubba first lost his job at WWE was because he took liberties with Sylvain Grenier and injured him.
Bubba might be 260 now but I think he could easily be 10-20lbs more. At his biggest in ECW, he wasn't far off 350 legit.

Interesting topic. Dutch should talk more about the psychology of crowds -- what pushes them over the edge, what defuses them, the kind of people who pose the biggest dangers and why. There aren't many guys left who have been in the middle of actual riots, as opposed to just baiting fanboys who want to get their sign on TV.

Met him at the Orlando airport, back in 2002. I think it was when they were fired from WWE and were headed to TNA. He didn’t seem in a real great mood, but he did take a picture with me. In typical Bubba fashion, no smile… Looks like he’s pissed off at the world. Which, at that point… He probably was with the WWE crap happening. I will have to look for the picture. It’s funny as hell. I’m 6 foot and he made me look tiny. So I think he’s probably 6’ 4” or 6’5”. Such an amazing career for both of them.

Yeah Bubba could incite a crowd, but to this day nothing tops the story of Cornette giving advice to New Jack before his first in-ring promo in front of a live crowd in Memphis in the old Smoky Mountain Wrestling promotion. It was 1994 or 95, & Cornette told him to go to the ring for a promo. New Jack had no idea what to say, so Jim reminded him that he was a heel & to just try & make everyone mad. He still had no idea, so Corny thought for a minute, & then whispered something in New Jack’s ear. So New Jack made his way to the ring & began telling that all white crowd in the Deep South, that he’d never been to Memphis before & he wanted to talk to someone who had. So he called this great guy he knew to get his opinion. And this guy told him that Memphis was actually a dump & the people were nothing but ignorant rednecks. New Jack said of course he had to agree since the guy he called was his close, personal friend… OJ Simpson. 😮😂 Needless to say that crowd went batshit. And New Jack never needed promo advice again.
