When the craziness was happening a friend who lived in Portland shared a lot of videos showing how overblown the news was making the situation. My son moved there in January 2022 and I've spent A LOT of time walking around a variety of areas in Portland and have not experienced anything threatening - day or night. I can't say the same about Seattle, which I didn't really like as much. My son does live in a nicer part of the city, so there is some bias in what I'm seeing. The Saturday market is in a less glamorous part of town, but still absolutely fine. I think more people need to visit and see for themselves that it isn't the horror story the media made it to be. I'd move there in a heartbeat.

I worked in downtown Portland for almost 20 years, and during that time, it was a gorgeous place. I felt safe walking around at night alone. In fact, it wasn't too many years ago, after a fireworks show in Waterfront Park, my son and I strolled all over town safely at midnight. It was a treat to spend an evening there. The governor and mayor literally destroyed our beautiful downtown area. Old Town, China Town, and any part north of Burnside is extra gnarly. But, I'm glad you visited Powell's Books! Love that place.
I'm glad you were able to visit the Gorge, the Falls, and see the mighty Columbia River. Life is a more 'normal' the further out you go in each direction. I'm located 11 miles east, and the devastation hasn't hit us as hard, except the cost of living.
I've lived here since I was a little girl and deeply saddened to see our once beautiful downtown turn into an ugly ghetto. I'm so happy you felt a good vibe in spite of it all. We have good people in Oregon.

We were there with years ago and it was beautiful. The international rose garden was absolutely gorgeous and we had a great time. We also visited the Pittock Mansion, loved it and the view of the city. Our biggest worry was finding a place to park! There is no way I'd go back there now, nor any time in the future, until sanity prevails. It was an amazing city, so much to see and do downtown, and it's just sad to see what has happened to a once vibrant and thriving city.

One of the only level-headed comments I've read on this video in regards to Portland. Too many folks in their tiny towns and suburban bubbles don't understand Portland's problems reflect the entire country's core issues: Access to (mental) healthcare, the drug (fentanyl) epidemic, and the housing crisis.

Being from Portland there's NO CHANCE you didn't see the wrong in the city. Just driving on the 84, i5 or 205 you see the trash everywhere and the homeless problem. I KNOW you got footage of that but for some reason didn't show it. Hopefully some young lady doesn't watch your video, think the place is safe and head there alone.

@@savannahmckendrick Nah thats awesome. You learned where not to go and at what times. But that situation exists and people try to pretend it dont ......🤷‍♂️ Portland murder up 300% Homeless camps everywhere. I almost had to shoot a Homeless knucklehead for pulling an axe on me when he asked for a cigarette and i said no downtown. My kids couldn't walk to the park because the park became a Homeless sanctuary with camping and drug use going on daily. Shit ain't sweet in Portland right now.

I liked your video of Portland! You are correct about it being a beautiful area. You are also correct about the city having so much graffiti. Homeless people everywhere too! Our daughter moved to Portland, from KCMO, about 7 years ago, and she still loves living there! Of course, we have been there many times, and plan to go back many more times! We have never camped in Portland, and honestly, I don't know if I would feel comfortable/safe camping. Camping areas that we have seen around that area, seem to have Homeless people living in the campgrounds. Some of them will steal from you. I have seen it happen!
It is good that you were talked in to going to Portland, Todd. You would have missed the beauty that it has to offer.

Portlands history is old and long. We had shanghigh tunnels, and even ghosts tours. We were the first with food trucks. But things went down hill Big Time. Portland recently made the top ten, for their bike paths and architecture. You should have gone up to the Portland zoo. That is beautiful.

I am glad you had a good visit to Portland and the surrounding area. While many people can get in and out without troubles and the people you meet will be nice, the negative reports about the city are also true. Maybe only a small percentage are affected by the negative, but they do still happen.
I grew up in Portland many decades ago at a time of some race riots (in the 60's) and currently live across the Columbia River in Vancouver. Even with the troubles of the 60's I always felt safe in Portland while growing up. Now, I would never go to downtown Portland for any reason, and travel to other parts of Portland only if I need to. Multiple companies (including corporate offices and retail stores and restaurants) have left town because of the current issues.
When my mother passed away a couple years ago, our realtor old us that her house in Vancouver would get multiple cash offers, mostly from people leaving Portland or California. He was right. Even if they do not vote in elections, people vote with their feet and wallets.
More recently a friend had to go to a business function in downtown Portland. He parked in a parking garage and returned to a busted-out window and items stolen. I think the items stolen were a sports coat and maybe gym bag of clothes. (but generally, nothing overly expensive)

Unfortunately you visited a s hole. When Cindy and me came to Portland in the early 80's it was one of the most beautiful cities. Our city government has allowed it to become what it is today. You only got a taste of it and thank God you had no issues. As you found out this is why we have decided to sale everything and leave the state of Oregon. By the way Todd if you carry your permit is not valid here in Oregon as we have no reciprocity with any other state.

The homeless encampment that you showed in the beginning of your video is a great example of decriminalization of drugs without a plan to curtail substance abuse. Todd to you question of would I go to Portland? A resounding no, not even with a Tesla with a peace sign on the hood. Fun fact, the term “shanghaied” was started in Portland. The bar tenders would drug patrons, send them through a trap floor in the floor and the poor bugger would wake up on a freighter headed to china.

Check out Frickers in Ohio. Their menu has Frickin' Chicken, Fricken Fries and other yummy entrees. :) The Great Northwest is a neat place to visit. Lived in Spokane, WA for a couple years. My mother was born there. But I would probably circumvent Portland and travel down the coast again. Amazing drive and breathtaking stops along the way. Keep up the great content.

Hey guys nice video, when you were on Palmer Mill Road another mile or so would have turned to pavement onto Brower Road then to Larch Mountain Road which would’ve taken you back down to the scenic Highway. I am really bummed because I live right in that area and would have loved to meet you guys. I guess too bad so sad. Love your videos.

I was born and raised only a few miles up hwy 30 from there. Portland used to be beautiful. It’s always been a place of crime but not to the extent it’s became as with much of Americas big cities. It’s sad to see many downtown buildings boarded up and graffiti all over. That’s not how it was. There was always homeless but they didn’t have tents and garbage all over the sidewalks they slept on the ground in doorways usually. It’s sad to see some of the changes.

You're walking through Saturday Market. We are the City of Roses...due to all the rose garden parks. So far into the vlog you are hitting the very heavy houseless areas...so of course you're going to see filthy and garbage. On the waterfront near the Steel bridge is utter trash. I live here and don't go for a Sunday stroll down there. 9:24 you're standing on the edge of skid row. 10:23 China Town, sadly is SKID ROW. I hope you move out of this area soon...BTW - Weed is legal here in Oregon. Powells is AMAZING...it's always a day trip for me, as I find it hard to leave. YES!! you made it to the Gorge...our backyard. When I need a mental health day - that's where I go. (During the weekdays it's less crowded.) Long hikes and fresh air. Uhhh...not sure what road you're on - it's not paved so I wouldn't have ever taken that route. Looks like a lovely bike ride. I haven't been on that bike trail... Now, Multnomah Falls...walk to the top...and continue for 6 miles...brings you back down the side of more water falls about five miles from where you parked. Walking to the top of Multnomah Falls in a mile - STRAIGHT UP! Kills the knees on the way down. I'm glad you had a good time in Portland and no one busted out your windows!! What you saw on TV during Covid was downtown in front of the federal building. WE protest...but that got crazy. We've always been a protesting town...but that was kind of beyond what I'm used to. Don't believe the hype. 🙃😜 BTW - I own a food truck 💚

I can’t believe that my fear of falling can actually be activated by looking straight down in a video and I want to instinctively pull you both back away from the railing. I think my fear was actually caused by a video of something I saw when I was very young.

The news was not wrong, they did set it on fire, now its just what's left. Each to their own of where you go, everything is a calculated risk. My god I was with my son at Lowes at 10:45am and got followed from the parking lot into the store and part way through the store in NC... don't feel safe anywhere anymore. Thank god for the 2A!

We got rid of our Himiway bike rack because it did the same as yours. Himiway didn’t help with our issues with our bike rack. We bought a Hollywood bike rack from etrailer and it is a very well built rack.

People have burnt that city down and Pissed and Shit on the streets for the last few years. They also don't believe in AMERICA - the USA. They think it's discusting which is IRONIC how they treat their city!

So sad to see what has happened to the city I was born and raised in. It used to be clean and beautiful and I was happy to come downtown every day to work. We finally got fed up with the weirdness (and politics!) and moved to Arizona 14 years ago. Every city has it's problems but it's nice to see that you found some high points on your trip. Keep up the great videos!

Sad. The Saturday market used to be packed. If you had been there before it went to pot (pun intended), you would know how much the lack of leadership which allowed the riots has done to that city. You are comparing what you are seeing to what the news showed, not to what it once was.
