As a mexican viewer and follower of yours, this news feels somewhat sad and demotivating, since in Mexico we are fighting so bad with peopleification, the extreme and ridiculous rise in prices and displacement from our homes by tourists and foreigners who are appropriating all the beautiful places in the country, when for us as locals, it is absolutely impossible even daring to dream of buying a property in the city, much less in the beautiful beaches because of this social phenomenon. :(
This is an interesting situation because the same thing has happened to British Columbia (where Allana is from) due to mass immigration and tourism.
I feel you. I'm pretty disappointed by this as well. There are better ways for tourists to explore countries that don't displace the locals in the area or make them rely on tourists for their income..
@@sarahforeverandever6293 It definitely is a huge problem in BC as well but not a problem for Allana, she owns a home in BC with enough leftover income to purchase additional properties overseas.
Obviously, being affluent is not a crime but just pointing out that she is not being pushed out of BC because of housing costs and feeling forced to purchase in a cheaper country.
My heart breaks for the locals of Tulum. Soon they’ll be like me. Not able to survive in this beautiful place they spent their whole lives. 😔

This feels rather sad. One one hand, I understand wanting to be able to own property in a beautiful place like Tulum but on the other, Mexico is struggling with the boom of tourists and nomads, pricing out locals with Airbnbs. I'd encourage you to find ways to ensure you are contributing to the community (and no, I don't just mean by being a tourist and spending money) to at least try to offset the negative implications of your part-time residency in Tulum.

It's terrifying how many foreing people in the comments are talking about their profits and gains with their properties here in Mexico while we're being pushed out of our lands 'cause we just can't afford it anymore, every beautiful place is becoming a tourists only place
I was born and raised in a beach town. Because of all the rich people and developers moving in nobody can afford to live there. Now my child can’t grow up where I did. It’s heartbreaking. Even apartments where I’m from are like 3k-4k a month. So sad. But I guess things change. Places advance. 😢
I feel like buying a home is becoming an issue world wide. As a Canadian, the pricing of houses here is INSANE. Homes in provinces like Ontario and British Columbia are wildly inflated and Alberta is becoming the same. Happy for them but also wish that it would be more easy for someone in their home country / province / etc to buy a home and live comfortably without foreign investors raking up the prices for locals.
This is happening in Portugal as well!! Particularly in madeira island.

My husband and I usually stay in Akamai right on the beach. One year we saw turtles laying eggs on 2 different nights. What an experience! And I usually watch the sun come up every morning, staying on the beach definitely has its perks!

Seems like an amazing investment both in yourselves and for your future. ❤️ My bf and I went to Tulum last year and a big part of the reason was seeing your trips along with friend recommendations. Every person who I’ve seen complain about the area is someone who clearly hasn’t done their research and expected a destination like Cancun etc. We loved the simplicity, the beauty, and the kindness of the people. We stayed at the Kimpton Aluna in Aldea Zama and absolutely loved it.

Hi, Mexican here! I agree with the other mexican comments, sadly, your passive income is costing us the hability to afford housing ): A lot of activists and colectives are literally fighting right now against real state cartels (yes, they're criminals and extremely corrupt) to stop this type of activity since it's increasing in an insane way the cost of living for locals. Please, try to stay informed on this issue and maybe re-evaluate the way you go through this. I know you don't mean to be part of something that might hurt locals, but the fact is that it is.. It's really a big issue now. ):
We have real estate cartels here in the US. They’re called Black Rock, State Street, and Vanguard. They’ve captured politicians and have too much power. Killing small businesses along the way and buying up property to turn around and rent it out or flip it a a higher price. The only way to fix this is with your voting power. Here in the states my vote goes to RFK Jr. He’s the only one talking about the issue. It is a complex one.

The real Tulum is not shown on instagram and the roads are horrible as you said. The taxis and the police are not your friends. And its not that nice as you see on Instagram. Its very expensive at the restaurants and clubs and as you also said the beachclubs are closing off the beach so there are not many public beaches and the beachclubs are so expensive and insane. You need a nice hotel there to enjoy it i would say ( i was there last year) going to the beach everyday like other places is not really possible.

For taxis- I recommended having cash ready and telling the driver “this is all I have” (After a while you guys will be accustomed to the rates and will know the decent fares) and/or just catch another taxi if one is inflating the prices. Also, the drivers tend to have their price cards that show the time table rates.
P.S. El Tren Maya is almost finished being built which will be convenient for traveling to other major cities!

I would love to hear more about tulum! I finally got to go on an Italy Spain trip for the first time last year and went to Ibiza and I loved it. Such a beautiful island. I would love to know how it compares
My in-laws live in Akumal, down the road from Talum. They live there 6 mo a year. There is also a Costco not far from you. One tip on your new place, everything corrodes near sea water, keep it minimal, and plan to replace everything every couple of years.

I always travel with a carry on, even before the Airlines lost my bag for 33 days! You can take some size liquids and I have a ton of travel size liquids in my carryon. I take 2 bathing suits and flip flops and a dress!

Lmao I’m so sorry I’m commenting again, but CONGRATS! The vacation home doubling as passive income is so nice. I have noticed that almost 75% of our Airbnb/Vrbo/Expedia guests actually are citizens of Mexico traveling to different parts of the country. Most homes or apartments in Mexico don’t have dishwashers so it may actually make more sense to invest in a beverage cooler since I don’t think most clientele would use the dishwasher. In addition to the AC units, the dishwasher is another appliance to maintain. I imagine there isn’t an electricity line for a dryer to go in the unit as well? We had to opt for stackable units, but the dryer saves us when we visit and for guests/housekeeping to avoid going to laundromats.
We’ve also noticed that a good chunk of our guests are working remotely so I’m not sure if you and Dejan would want to invest in a monitor and HDMI cable for people to plug into in the vanity area - we did and it’s been great for when we go there and for guests.
Our house is in Cancun, so it is different than Tulum, but I’m excited for you both AND take it all with a grain of salt. 😅

Ouch that sucks not having your bags! I'd die! This is why even on the longest flights my husband and I only bring carry ons. We've become masters at fitting everything in 2 small cases.
I believe the name you were looking for is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I know the struggle - I have had many an experience with SAD in my time; unfortunately, I also have depression and stress induced anxiety, so winter where I live is actually a little bit of hell at times. Thankfully, I’ll be moving to South Carolina by the end of this year, and it stays pretty sunny and warm there year-round. Hopefully you get to make good use of your loft during the rough parts of the year!
