  • “I’m Still Standing” is a song by Elton John, released in 1983 as the second single from his album “Too Low for Zero”. The song is a triumphant anthem of resilience and perseverance, celebrating Elton’s recovery from a broken relationship and his determination to keep making music despite the challenges he faced in his personal and professional life.
The song was written by Elton John and his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, who based the words on his own experience of moving on after a divorce. Taupin said that the song was “a sort of kiss-off to an old girlfriend” and that it was “perhaps one more example of the original idea being interpreted by everyone into something quite different”. Elton John, however, related the song to his own struggles with addiction, depression, and self-doubt, which he overcame with the help of his friends and fans. He said that the song was “a statement of defiance” and that it “was a way of saying, ‘I’m still here, I’m still alive, I’m still making music, and you can’t get rid of me’”.
The song was a huge hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries, including the UK and the US. It also became a staple of Elton John’s live shows, where he often performed it with a colorful and flamboyant stage outfit. The music video for the song, directed by Russell Mulcahy, was filmed in Cannes, France, and featured Elton John in various costumes and locations, surrounded by dancers and models. The video also had a cameo appearance by John Lennon’s son, Sean, who was a friend of Elton John.
An interesting fact about Elton John is that he changed his name legally in 1972, after not wanting to be associated with his birth name, Reginald Kenneth Dwight. He chose the name Elton John from two of his former bandmates in Bluesology, saxophonist Elton Dean and singer Long John Baldry. He also added the middle name Hercules, not after the Roman god, but after a horse in a British sitcom called Steptoe and Son. Elton John said that he felt more comfortable and confident with his new name, and that it helped him to create his musical persona.
