My whole life I have known a friend's father was once a member of Manson's "family". He got smart, got clean, and left before all the murdering happened, but Dad told me that my best friend's father had said Manson was the most hypnotizing speaker he'd ever heard. I did not dare bring this fact up to the man himself until Charles Manson passed away. Only then did I ask him how he felt about Manson being dead, and he said, "I was one of his followers, the Family, for a time in my life!" I told him Dad had told me that from my earliest days, and I had always known. He was astounded, because it was such a tightly kept secret locally. What he said about Manson being dead was, more or less, "I'm glad. I spent decades feeling like I have to look over my shoulder, because I left..." In other words, he didn't have to be afraid for himself or his family any more.
