"Launched in 1983, the Olympus AFL was one of the first cameras powered by a lithium battery. The high capacity of the built-in battery reduced the strobe flash recharge time to about 1.5 seconds. The nickname "Picasso" derived from the Japanese word "pika," meaning "flash" from the way in which the camera's flash operated. It was superseded by the FTL-S, which offered an improved range of functions." So the reason for having built-in battery was type of the battery (lion).

I had one. I may still do, somewhere. I remember it took very good photos. I think the batteries must have lasted an awful long time. I don't ever remember changing them. Barmy idea though.

Lithium battery has both greater voltage 3V instead of 1.5V (flash reloads faster) and greater power density so it can hold more power in the same battery volume. Olympus claims it was working 5 years if 12 films each 24 exposures were shot by year. You can resolder a CRP2 battery to make this camera work.

Interestingly, the instruction manual says the battery should last about five years - based on using 12 x 24 exposure rolls of film per year. A soldered in battery seems like a very odd design choice. Apparently, this was the first camera to be powered by a lithium battery.

One not to buy then, how much a bargain it might be 🙄👍📸
