Topaz DeNoise and Topaz AI sharpen are both great bits of software and as you say Trond work like magic. When you are forced to shoot in low light they are a life saver. Cheers Keith
I came across another wildlife photographer on youtube using this about a week ago and thought I'd give Topaz Denoise a try. Absolutely love it! It's an amazing product and Topaz has some great things going on. Let's hope Adobe doesn't ruin it.
Trond, here's a LR tip you'll enjoy. In the "Detail" panel, hold ALT while increasing "Masking" until the background goes mostly black. Masking effectively blocks sharpening from being applied to areas that lack detail. It's great for sky, water, out-of-focus backgrounds. If it's to your liking, this also allows you to push the sharpening a bit more because only areas with good detail will be treated. But that's just if it's to your liking. Be well.
Topaz adds all these artefacts to fine feather detail. It clumps pixels together into homogeneous rows, effectively reducing the resolution of my high megapixel camera. Theres just so much of these zippering and staircase artefacts. It works brilliantly for smooth out of focus backgrounds but I have to mask out its effects on the bird itself. It's very noticeable how the reviewers don't zoom right in on the image. I've tried to love it but it just ruins the experience of examining the details a modern high megapixel camera can record. Some types of subjects don't suffer as badly but fine feather detail is just about the worst affected. So for me it's only useful for cleaning g up soft backgrounds where the A I algorithm doesn't have to work as hard.
It's Great I use the denoise and like the al clear part in the program with med noise high sharpen . I like it and some photos you play around to get best .have fun .
Crazy! I keep getting people on my channel asking me about if I like Topaz or not and I just have never put myself to do it yet, but definitely need to after seeing results like this haha.
De Noise is great for sure Trond, I find the low light section seems to do a good job on most Photos. Like you, I would like to be able to master Photoshop, but I better figure out how to use Lightroom properly first. It's all new to me in the last year, just trying to learn what ever I can as I go. 👍🏻
sharpening, extra sharpening, radius.... but no masking in LR, needlessly introducing more noise. ah what the heck! just pay for something to fix it afterwards
I love Topaz. You should have try a more difficult file. Some of my shots were ISO 25000, and Topaz performed miracles! I shot an owl coming out of a nest in some dark woods. Individual hairs were visible I couldn't even see in the raw file, but Topaz brought them out.
Really enjoyed this video, thank you. To be honest I have seen in many instances people using Topaz De noise and the noise reduction is definitely removing very fine detail which for me is an issue on birds or mammals with fur, or any ultra fine detail!
They are probably using it wrong then. It’s completely controllable and having used multiple noise removing software, this is by far the best for retaining detail.
Really stunning photo Trond! I just need to ask. how the f did you get such good result with a tc? I get some really bad fringing around the subject with 0 sharpness... exact same setup :P
Yeah, so am I. But when I think about it it's like: why not to use possibilities that you have? LR or any other program also have denoise or sharpen (I use those two Topaz softs) features. Topaz is just simply better. Actually is so good that you have to pay attention not to overdo it:)
I will just add one more remark - technology is getting bettter and better and more Topaz-like good things will pop up, so we just have to learn how to use them properly
Have you not zoomed right in and seen all the zippering artefacts on fine feather detail? Or the way it clumps all the pixels together reducing resolution.?
Soon we can take any crappy photo. Replace sky, replace land, replace bird, and it is all perfect. No need for expensive camera, and no skill needed. Not sure if I like the AI tech.
To be fair, you will always need the skill to take a good photo. Composition and artistic vision can be the key difference between a good photo and a ‘crappy’ photo. The tech just helps you improve on what you already have. No amount of tech can change a crappy photo into a masterpiece. Photo needs to be decent in the first place.
@@debzyjg Been using denoise on low light drone photos from my Mavic 2 pro. Results are outstanding. Far better than I have been able to do in PS. I fear that a smartphone and AI soon could achive simular image quality as my $20000 stash of photo gear, with no editing. Think that could kill my passion for photography.
@@jrskeide I’ve had some good shots on my smartphone no doubt. But my DSLR can always out perform it easily. There’s only so much camera tech you can pack into a smartphone, because it’s built to be more than a camera. I think it’s good to have products like this that can be so time saving. Especially when you may have lots of pictures to edit! 😁
No more noise in my photos also, it's called DXOPhotolab4 and Affinity Photo. I avoid Adobe like the plague. At the end of the day, regardless of what noise reduction software you use, it's not the same as capturing the same image with lower ISO values. It's still software that all it does is manipulate the noise captured in the image, you will lose sharpness and detail. Go take the same image for example at 100 ISO and then at 2000 ISO, clean up the 2000 ISO image, and place them side by side, it will be noticeable. The less noise in the original image the better.
I've had this discussion with many people and people accuse me of being stupid! I've been a nature photographer for over thirty years and I have never found any software which can distinguish between noise and fine detail! To my eyes I can see the software killing the detail as it reduces the noise even with Topaz de-noise which many swear by! Perhaps I'm just awkward! cheers.
@@antonoat your eyes are not deceiving you. Look it helps you get more shots that in the past would have been throw aways. But as you said, and I have also noticed is that, it's still software manipulation, and it can only do so much before killing fine details. I mostly shoot birds, and it is noticeable. I guess we both have a sharp eye when it comes to detail. And I am sure we are not the only ones. Not bashing any denoise software, I also use it. It's just not the same as capturing the original image/file with a low ISO value. I wonder how much Topaz is paying all these youtubers to advertise for them. I am also watching less and less youtube with their recent censorship nonsense.
@@jfphotography69 topaz is using some sort of narrow AI to distinguish objects from background, details from unimportant stuff etc. it's not perfect but often i see photos where it can actually add details, as it manages to understand that's a part of bird to be enhanced. when i have very noisy images i can also see that it does basically nothing to the bird not to destroy the remaining details and cleans the background only, it most often seem to understand what an eye is etc. i got trial version, then spent few months without it before deciding to purchase it. as i say it's emerging technology but i see huge future potential. btw sadly I'm not sponsored by them. if you have an idea about abilities of machine learning you should, in my opinion, expect this (type of software) to rule photography down the road as hard as making people reconsider need for larger sensors

I absolutely love Topaz DeNoise. Total game changer.
You haven't seen all the zippering artefacts on fine feather detail?
@@markrigg6623 what?
@@debzyjg Its a perfectly straightforward question sorry if it confused you. Not trying to hassle you.
Amazing Photo! I'm exited to try the tool!
Try using the AI Clear tab in denoise. You will like it!
Brilliant video, Always inspirational and Helpful. Many Thanks For Sharing.

I tried Topaz Denoise but I prefered the noise reduction in DXO Photolab 4. But it does not hurt to have both!
DxO is excellent 👌

I bought Topaz denoise a few weeks ago and I am so happy with it, my bird photo's are so crisp now. I wished I bought it sooner :)
Thanks so much 🧡
Very cool. I’m sold

I'm surprised you haven't had it sooner tbh, it's a fantastic program. Welcome to the club! Lol
What is the difference between sharpen al and topaz denoise?
I do actually have a question for you 🤗 I know you use the d4s and d500 for your photos etc but what do you film yourself on?
Topaz Denoise gjør en god jobb, har kun brukt det ei ukes tid, men tror nok at jeg kjøper etter endt prøvetid.. Takk for informativ video.. :-)
Really stunning photo Trond!
I just need to ask. how the f did you get such good result with a tc?

Yes, will need to go over it again to see.

I wish you had done this video with a photo at ISO 4000 or 5000. ISO1200 is kid stuff and most software can manage that.
topaz sharping all it the same work flow than denoise????
