For those who missed the "chancla" (slipper, but "chancla" actually refers to a sandal, more precisely a flip-flop) joke at 4:49 .
In latin america, some people (particularly housewives, mothers, and nuns) use one of their sandals to beat people up as a way to punish misbehavior. Silly as it may sound, this is frighteningly effective (not to mention painful), going as far as having recorded cases where "la chancla" has been used to dissuade pickpockets and even stop/foil armed robbery attempts.
In a way 'la chancla" is like the Mjolnir (Thor's hammer) of Latin America; in the hands of someone unworthy, it will simply be a cheap (often plastic) sandal, but when wielded by a person with enough authority and responsibility, the "chancla" unlocks its full destructive powers (the funniest part is that in some cases people will throw "la chancla", and somehow they never lose said "chancla", almost as if it had found a way back to its owner).
In case you want a definition for Chancla:
*Chancla* (plural: *Chanclas*)
A simplified name for Chancleta (plural: Chancletas), which gain their name from the sound produced when walking while wearing these types of sandals (more accurately flip-flops). Oftentimes the separation between a sandal (sandalia) and a chancleta, is simply the quality of it and how much noise it makes when you walk. Proper sandals tend to make less noise, whereas cheap, plastic sandals have a much louder more rubber-y sound to them (thus their name).
Common myths:
- the louder the sound a chancla makes, the more painful it will be if you're hit with it.
- the crappier and cheaper the look of a plastic chancla, the stronger it is as a weapon.
- Some people say that an experienced wielder of the "chancla" can make it curve like a boomerang when thrown
