Congrats on 50K, Brickey! We were supposed to get the DL Tomorrowland plan at last weekend’s event, I am quite sure. According to my folks, it was stopped by one Mr. Robert A Iger. For better or worse, that I don’t know. Given the Cars thing at MK was done at his insistence, I’m going to guess worse! -Brayden

One of the biggest problem with Tomorrowland is that right now there are very few positive visions of the future. When Tomorrowland started, every major corporation had an amazing vision of the future and right now most corporations can barely see past the next quarter.

I'm with you but even not so cynical... What would the vision of tomorrow be? I know that nostalgia has people wanting the kinetic motion, but is that a statement of tomorrow? Or is that just nostalgia? I think a real vision is needed. I also think that they'll build a new space mountain too so we're talking a few decades from now

I think that if Fantastic Four: First Steps is successful, Disney should take some cues from it and go all in on a retrofuturistic design that highlights the 60s optimism of the future, rather than basing it on our present visions of tomorrow. Such a design could essentially future-proof the land and give them an excuse to incorporate a potential Fantastic Four attraction seamlessly into the area, as well as other suitable IP like Big Hero 6 and Tron.

It baffles me that Disney is willing to add entire lands to parks, and gut entire areas to build new attractions, whilst intentionally neglecting reviving attractions whose bones are still dormant in Tomorrowland. Obviously, I don’t think the Disney Parks fandom (especially west coasters) can scream any louder that we want the Peoplemover to come back. The most frustrating thing is that the decision to revive the PM would be the biggest net positive change to make to the park. The least amount of construction and renovation with the BIGGEST return on investment. It’s an easy W, yet Disney is seemingly content with the skeleton of the dead attraction looming over Tomorrowland

Disney isn't Disney anymore is the biggest issue. Disneyland was born of creativity and making dreams reality. All the old timers that still barely kept hold of that are gone. Now it's run by greedy corporates that only care about quantity over quality so they can keep their annual bonuses where they are. Its been a horrible slow death of one of the most amazing institutions many of us grew up with. Kids aren't what they used to be because parents aren't what they used to be.

Once the parking garage on the Eastside is complete and DCA expands into the drop off zone it us rumored that Tomorrowland would expand as well. The parade and the Railroad have a hold on this section of the property as well as a few back of house buildings. "What if" the Railroad moved further South before heading West and the parade storage and buildings went under ground, that would free up space to expand or relocate Tomorrowland and thusly give more of the current Tomorrowland to Fantasyland or a new land.

    • @DrStarlander
      @DrStarlander 4 месяца назад +1

On the topic of the Disneyland railroad moving, if you look at how close the Galaxy's Edge show buildings get to the city streets (separated by only a narrow backstage access/circulation road and treeline), that is likely what Disney will want in Tomorrowland some day (where Autopia is) when they bring modern, massive show buildings in.
The current train tracks are too far in from the property line and reduce the effective acreage, and running the tracks behind the buildings is "bad show" and disrupts the service access. So what may happen is the same thing they did for Galaxy's Edge in which they re-route the train tracks farther into the parks -- like literally a bridge running across the submarine lagoon (kind of like Tony Baxter's Discovery Bay vibes) and you get to the lands and attractions at the perimeter by passing under the tracks (like going into Toontown).

I like your vision for Tomorrowland. It should be "a moment in time", something like Main Street USA. I also like it being an alternate reality thing, some sort of "For All Mankind", based on the landing on the moon, a fundational moment in history. At Eurodisney, they tried something diferent with Discoveryland, a sort of Jules Verne land, but the theming was lost with the inclusion of Star Tours, Captain Eo, Autopia, etc.

tomorrowland's future lies in its past. the blueprints have been gathering dust in the disney archives for decades. anyone who actually got to visit the 1967 tomorrowland (myself included) knows how beautiful and amazing it was back then. the kinetic energy was all around you in multiple levels.a rotating building, peoplemover trains, skyway gondolas, monorails, autopia cars, submarines, rocket jets. there wasn't anywhere you could look and not see movement. that's what's missing from tomorrowland today. it's stagnated beyond belief. i'm 63 years old. i first rode the peoplemover when i was 6,and my last ride was when i was in my 30s. will i have to wait until i'm 80 to ride it again (God willing i live that long)? forget about imagineering something new. just give us back what we had with updated technology, and let the future generations see and experience walt's vision of tomorrow the way he wanted it to be.

Relying on a “vision of the future from the past” does solve the issue of the land eventually looking or feeling outdated, but I can’t help but feel that the true vision of Walt was to create a land that is optimistic and excited about the future, and celebrates what mankind’s innovation and hard work can accomplish.
With that, Offhand Disney put out a video a while back where he suggested using “solar punk” as a way to revamp Tomorrowland. Basically having sleek futuristic designs that incorporate lots of greenery and renewable energy, with an emphasis on conservation and sustainability as a vision of the future. I think he even suggested Wall-E as an IP that could fit well into such a land. I’ve always thought that would be such a cool approach and help keep the integrity of the land’s spirit, while still keeping it fresh for the next several decades.

Thank you Brickey, another fantastic video, I'm a big fan of the retro celebration of Tomorrowland idea! I love that you are studying Disneyland's past to better predict its future. I think if we look at *the past* and importantly include *the decision this week* by Disney to fill in Rivers of America at WDW for a Cars attraction, what we can now predict is that *almost nothing is off the table* in terms of being removed or replaced. Disney is far less sentimental than we fans.
So I think a change we may have thought was unthinkable a week ago is quite possible...and could change Tomorrowland dramatically...Matterhorn being changed to the Frozen mountain (including dramatic changes to rock work and bobsleds become sleighs) and Arendelle getting built where the submarines and monorail and utopia is now. This is on par with what is happening at WDW.
Think about it, they are selling almost no Matterhorn merchandise or food. And wouldn't Iger want drivers along I-5 to see the Frozen. mountain instead of public domain Matterhorn? That change could really reduce the scale of Tomorrowland and change the what-happens-to-Tomorrowland equation.

Your answer is Fantastic 4... Assuming it's successful at the box office. The intellectual properties of Tron Legacy and the Tomorrowland film didn't quite make the numbers at the box office to justify any Tomorrowland additions.
Also have to remember that Disneyland has many international guests, not only locals regularly visiting the park. So you have to keep some recognisability to meet the expectations of those guests looking for the 'Disneyland' experience. Space Mountain is a perfect example... If I was travelling internationally I'd be excited to ride the original Space Mountain experience or even Hyperspace Mountain… But I'd be disappointed if it was the Ghost Galaxy Halloween overlay.

I think you did an excellent job explaining the theme of the land and how it should be… I think we’ve all been thinking something similar… It needs to be a retro themed cohesive land, and who better to be the ambassador and mascot and guide through the land, other than Walt Disney himself… it should be a cohesive themed retro late 1950s land… Exploring advanced transportation and other things that will provide tremendousbenefit to humanity … excellent job in explaining a great vision for that land… That’s the only way it could be done. You can’t keep up with technology. It has to be tomorrow land of the past for the future… The only way it would work… It would be brilliant it would be beautiful.

Considering the amount of work being done in DCA and the new expansions ahead for Disneyland Forward. I see new lands being the priority. Disney wants to utilize all the new acquired land now with new worlds (first) because Tomorrowland is “good enough for now”. I imagine they want the Tron IP to grow more in popularity with the new upcoming film and if it’s successful enough I can see it easily taking over for Tomorrowland. If I were to make a prediction for (Best Case Scenario) on breaking ground for new construction/remodeling/etc. it would be the year 2027/2028 or 2029-31 with Tomorrowland finally being something truly impressive!

Brickey, this is an immensely intelligent and thoughtful theory of what they're planning. I appreciate your willingness to take these ideas and put them "on paper" so to speak.
I don't know, however, if the current leadership of Disney has that level of foresight, thought, and imagination to utilize Tomorrowland as its own meta story of Disneyland and Walt's vision. The current storytelling machine is so focused on conservative money making ideas and the parks seem to reflect that philosophy. D23, specifically the Horizons park session, didn't do much to alleviate that although I understand that their immediate response is necessary with Epic Universal next door.
I hope we'll be talking about this in 10-15 years in the ways you've described.

Tomorrowland used to be the life of park!! Everyone wanted to be there up till after the end of rocket rods really…there was so much to do and so much fun!! I feel like this commitment they have made to make everything IP based is setting themselves up for failure, it also creates a conflict with the design and theme of the park and lands as a whole!!! The more pointless IP’s being added makes me less and less interested in going to the parks, everything I enjoy is gone, and the new designs and concepts with IP’s do not work as a whole…the parks are slowly imploding with bad decisions and with leaders struggling to hold on to their jobs and justifying their positions

Hello Sir, they have no idea what they want to do with that area. Yes, I believe you have a good point. With today's tech, video walls, projector tech, there should always be new tech in there. Like a NES type area full time, you come in and come out to show what is out there, Space X type stuff. Great video

Attempting constructive criticism. I like your videos but sometimes they feel like they could be edited by 1/3 to feel less repetitive.
This video is broken down into 1) the Tomorrowland problem 2) Disney focusing on capacity through expansion 3) the Disney IP idea.
Breaking it down, 3 minutes are spent bagging on Tomorrowland, not just stating issues, but going negative (e.g. sorrowland, broken, half dead). I know it has problems and needs love, but the video tone feels like an overly negative vibe. That negativity continues to be sprinkled in throughout the video (e.g. rotting away, maybe the future dies at Disneyland, Disney ignoring fans) and contributes to the feeling of repetitiveness and hopelessness.
The discussion of prioritizing new capacity and DCA parity is good (3 min), but then the next 2 minutes goes back to the problems of Tomorrowland (makes it feel repetitive), how Disney has no plans for Tomorrowland, and how it will be over a decade before any updates are likely to occur.
The last 6 minutes are where you focus on the Disney IP idea, which is good, but there is a feeling that you are undercutting your own idea by going back to the ‘Disney has no plan’ talk. Just state your positive idea and don’t go negative or negate the blue sky idea by hedging.
So, what could have been a great video about room for improvement at Tomorrowland, why Tomorrowland is not currently a focus, and an idea for the future that could have left viewers hopeful, turned into a video that ignores the positives, tells us why things are not going to get better, and then describes an idea while implying that Disney will likely not do it.

As a generation x growing up in the 1980s with the original Star Wars trilogy, tomorrow land was always my favorite. I can still remember riding space mountain over and over again. I always envisioned a type of Star Wars land but galaxy’s edge ruined that. Then I envisioned a Tomorrowland that looked like the fifth element. I never liked the mid century modern style. Now I think we should do a Tomorrowland based on Tron. I really miss the starcade and I think a recreation of Flynn’s arcade would be really cool. Buzz lightyear and pizza planet should be moved to DCA with the other Pixar properties. Star tours can be rethemed to almost anything. Autopia should have been rethemed to cars years ago and the submarine ride should be repurposed.

One of my biggest disappointments for the revival of Tomorrowland, given how dependent Disney is on IP now, is that the movie Tomorrowland wasn't a huge hit to become a huge multi-film franchise. I heard at one point they were also planning a Tomorrowland anthology series on Disney+, I'd still love to see that. I am so glad that I got to experience Tomorrowland between 1967 and 1987 (when "Adventure Thru Inner Space" was still there) I absolutely loved it and I am thankful for the memories of that at least.

I I am time stamping this comment at 2:58. My thoughts about why tomorrowland is sorrow land is because they need to build up the capacity elsewhere in order to be able to totally utterly redo the land. The only thing that I am scratching my head about is why there were no big announcements at all for Disneyland. DCA got all of the glory they need it but also they have so many more attractions that can eat people in ways that Disneyland doesn't.

Tomorrowland being used to represent the chronological history of the parks is a really interesting idea. You could say something poetic, like how the accomplishments of decades past are what lay the foundation for what’s yet to come. while the rest of the park evolves, Tomorrowland can be used to preserve the legacies of lands/attractions in an archive that guests can still interact with.

  • @SuperKazmierski

TomorrowLand feels like what I remember Six Flags feeling like (haven't been there in decades). It's the most failed land in the entire resort.
Each land feels extremely immersive. Star Wars Land, Marvel, Cars, Redwoods... they each feel like a totally unique space, removed from Anaheim. TomorrowLand feels like a mixed-up space with contrasting styles without a single "Feel".
Unfortunately, the future doesn't have a single style Disney can pull from.
Some Toy Story, some Star Wars, some Nemo, some 1950s style.
Abandon Tomorrowland totally, and just put up a sign that says "coming soon".

I think one of the biggest problems is that we have more recently gone through such a technological boom that it's hard to put something there that won't be instantly out of date. I think it would be interesting if they were to make a ride that looks at how the theme park technology has changed and advanced over the years and what it could be in the future.

I liked the D23 announcements-especially the Walt Disney Opera house show, however, I too was disappointed in not hearing an announcement for a Tomorrowland re model. I wish they would revert Tomorrowland in using the mid century modern aesthetic that it once had in its heyday. When the land had moving objects decked out in primary colors. Along with flair from Mary’s Blair’s MCM artwork. The remodel should also include a form of the People Mover. It’s sad because Tomorrowland currently state looks like a dead mall.

When I was a kid, Tomorrowland was pretty fascinating. I still remember the Adventure Through Inner Space ride, Mission to Mars, Captain EO, People Mover, Circle Vision, Skyway, & other things that were there. Even the old Mary Blair mural with the satellites. It was one of my favorite lands. However, Disneyland has pretty much neglected the area for years. They tried to revamp it in the later 90's, but it ended up looking kind of "cheesy". Stupid Rocket Rods idea ruined the People Mover track. I hope that Disney has a major revamp in mind 'cause that land needs to be reworked badly. 🧐

Well, they did do "Saving Mr. Banks", which was fairly successful, although certainly not a blockbuster. That's Walt specific. Or maybe the Imagineers are going to break out the big guns and really go to town with something spectacularly robotic? Something forward of "Forward". Ah, I am worried that we won't know for a good while.
P'haps some alternate history? Oh, I know you were able to fit the Frozen land into one of the "Forward" parking lots, but that didn't get announced. Oh well, the info coming out of D23 was still cool. And so are your analyses.

Yes, I know that I miss the Halloween overlay ride: Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy here at Disneyland, but I have a new idea for the Space Mountain at the Magic Kingdom. Since they put the Christmas overlay during the Mickey's Very Mery Christmas Party, so during the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween, I want them to do as what they did not change like I did a long time ago: the Halloween overlay of the Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy attraction for the legacy of two versions in California and Hong Kong.

I see that being doable because if they stuck to the future it’s would constantly have to change. I kinda wish tomorrow land focused on Star Wars but even that wouldn’t have been the best fit. I just wonder if they focused on the retro Disney if it would popular. I look forward to seeing what’s to come!

Here's the thing: Disney does have plans for Tomorrowland in the near future, however, it'll be during other things. Parts of Tomorrowland have to be shut down to restore and repair and reopen certain attractions.... for example, one slow attraction that operates overhead because they're going to bring 2 versions of it with the expansion.

No one can change your park except for you
Don't ever let anyone ever ignore you
Just open your wallets and your mind
    Mmm
Is it really fair to feel, this way inside?
    Whoa-oh-oh
Someday, somebody's gonna make you want to
Find a bulldozer and say goodbye
Until then, baby, are you going to let 'em
Walk on by and make you cry?
    Don't you know?
Don't you know, things can change?
    Things will go your way

You are so dang good at explaining stuff lol. I think just like what they're doing with movies, making sequels to extend the stories of already successful franchises, they're playing it safe at the parks too, making attractions and lands based on successful franchises. Tomorrowland will get "fixed," but first, they're doing what will 100% work.

In Magic Kingdom is the same issue. But, with some of the other announcements this week I could see Monsters Inc Laugh Floor moving to Hollywood Studios and the potential to close the speedway if they open that style attraction for the Cars family ride. That (plus the already empty Stitch's great escape) would leave tons of room to reimagine a crazy cool new Tomorrowland in FL.
