I have a hard time here Mark, the Benromach 15 has and continues to be one of my go to whiskies and this expression is just a gem. The Glen Scotia has such a distinct and malt forward spirit, with a haze of funk ( less than its neighbours!!). These are great competitors. I Couldn’t call a winner but want the Benromach to excel! But damn the Scotia is just an amazing dram!!
As always, just a superlative review!! The notes as always of smell and taste are always the very very best on RUclips!! 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃 thanks Mark!!

I thought you would like this match up! It’s hard to choose here. My choice likely reflects my bias but G&M should step up their game and distance themselves from the big 5 who over proof whisky to 40 or 43.

Excellent comparison, Mark. I know for a fact (because Glen Scotia distillery released that information in an official tasting video) that Glen Scotia 15 YO is matured for almost 15 years in burbon barrels and then finished for a period of three weeks in first fill oloroso sherry casks. So you were right about there being some sherry influence, I also immediately felt it when I first tried this one. At least that was true for the bottle you reviewed (they have since changed the bottle design so I am not sure about the cask recipe for the new one).

    • @WhiskyWhistle

Thanks kindly! Now that makes sense. I see the new bottle according to the website is first fill ex bourbon and re-fill American oak casks - so maybe a little shift!

The flavor I got with the Glen Scotia was campfire toasted marshmallows. Palate only. I got light chocolate on the nose, with nuts. I scored the Benromach higher. Both have earned a place in my selection, but I doubled up on the Benromach 15 and also packed in two bottles of Benro10, as well. They are both rather hard to find in these parts and Glen Scotia represents the ONLY Campbeltown expression even available here. Here in the wet corner of the Left Coast of North America, Benro15 is pennies above $100 US, and Glen Scotia 15 is $20 cheaper.

    Hey Mark...
Can't tell you how envious I am of your Glen Scotia collection! Getting it here in Ontario is nearly impossible.
As for Benromach 15, it lists at nearly $60 more than the Glen Scotia 15 on the LCBO website. With that price difference Glen Scotia wins out, hands down.
Campbeltown is top of my bucket list, should I ever make it back to Scotland. I'll be taking an empty suitcase, and tons of bubble wrap!
Speaking of umami and mushrooms, have you tried the Bearface 01 Matsutake whisky yet? I don't often purchase backup bottles of any whisky, but I must admit to getting a spare of that one...😉
This was an excellent comparison review, thanks!

@@Raymaster7482 Hi there! The only BS here is the control of liquor in Ontario. We can order hard liquor from outside of the province within Canada, if it is produced in Canada. Should I wish to get hold of (for example) a particular Scotch whisky, I can bring it in from Scotland through the LCBO with a whopping 25-35% surcharge, but I'd also have to buy a full case. Yet I can't order a bottle of Scotch from an Alberta outlet to be sent here.
We do have an amount allowance to bring liquor in from other provinces if we're traveling, much the same as the U.S. and Canadian borders, but it's a 32 hour drive to Edmonton so I'm unlikely to be doing that...sadly.
I could drive out and see Mark at Whisky Whistle, maybe find some stuff in Winterpeg. That's only a 20-hour drive.
      One way.
      Might be fun though! 😉
Regardless of all the shenanigans, things could certainly be far worse...
