Breathtaking...Beethoven’s final 2 Sonatas are both masterpieces of such transcendent power they elude description. These works were born and brought to life out of silence by this genius. The second movement of the C minor Op. 111 Sonata is heaven-sent. The the final few minutes of this work never fail to produce a profoundly moving experience - such peace and calmness and other-worldly beauty. Played by one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, this proves a most worthy performance indeed.

It’s so rare to hear such amazing intellect living next to such burning emotional musicality in one brain. If that’s what you love to hear, then you need look no farther than Ashkenazy.

And to think that the master was deaf when he wrote his last piano sonatas !

And his symphonies….the 9th for example. Whatever we may think of Beethoven’s sonatas, to be deaf when writing such titanic pieces of music is a feat of unfathomable genius. Remember, he was quite young when he began to lose his hearing.
