You should never net a salmon when the season is closed. Their mortality rate is much higher if you net/handle/land them.
Just cut the line if you can’t safely dehook them. It seems weird but it’s the best chance they’ve got.

Did you drop your jig all the way down to the bottom and start jigging? Or just drop it down to what the fish finder indicated fish at?

When rockfishing, I drop all the way to the bottom, then jig about 1 crank off the floor. I use the fish finder to help look for reefs or if I am targeting a school of blacks/blues.
