Thank you for Phyllus's fruitcake recipe. I had just found out that she passed. Quite a remarkable lady and loving mom, grandma. I hope the family stays close and work out the loneliness they will be suffering. All l can tell you is that she will be missed by alot of people but mostly her family. You never get over the loss but you have many happy memories.it was obvious that she loved you all so much.

Phyllis will live on as one the sweetest best teachers on RUclips. Her legendary recipes are the ones I remember from a child. My mother made the best fruitcakes and no one in the family has her recipe. This one from Phyllis is the closest to hers I’ve seen yet. I baked one this Christmas from a recipe I got from King Arthur web site that was labeled “Everyone’s Favorite Fruitcake” NOT! It was dry and the flavor wasn’t as I remembered my mothers. This is not to say that I haven’t gotten some wonderful recipes from King Arthur’s website though. But, this one will be my new go to recipe from now on. Thank you again Phyllis (RIP) for another great recipe and tutorial.

Come Christmas it was the best thing you ever tasted. Thank you for the recipe, the recipe went to the grave with my Aunt and Grandmother. This means the world to me to have this now.

10/13/2020: In the past couple of days, for some unknown reason, I have been remembering my moma's Thanksgiving tradition of making this kind of fruitcake for Christmas presents. I have such fond memories of the whole process. Once baked, she would wrap the cooled cake in a just-for-this linen napkin, used each year, and repeatedly dribble rum over it at set intervals until mid-December when the shipping began. This was the only alcohol in our home and I thought the smell was just lovely.
This meant Thanksgiving to me more than turkey and pumpkin pie. While her recipe has long been lost, the one here seems to be just like it. And though I am 71 with children raised and gone, I plan to make myself one for the very first time this Thanksgiving. If it goes well, next year I will share with others. Thanks!

I made this fruitcake year before last and everyone loved it. I brought it to Christmas eve dinner and presented it on a beautiful Christmas plate as a hostess gift. The hostess remarked to me the following morning, which was Christmas morning, that she kept making trips to the fridge during the night to forage for more cake as she could not stop eating it. I will be bringing her another this year.. Thank you. I love your style.

I made the cake the first week of April and followed your recipe to a T (well except for your secret spice since I didn't have any) When done the cake is soooo heavy but it looked and smelled perfect. I misted it with rum every week and finally today I got a taste. OMG it is better than the bricks I used to buy at the store. So I just wanted to say thank you. I've written out the recipe and have it stored away in my book of "do not lose" recipes.

I’ve made fruitcakes to give as gifts for years. I store them in containers after I cover the tops of the cakes with cheesecloth and then soak the cheesecloth in rum. I store the cakes for about three months and soak the cakes in rum once a week. By Christmas they are delicious, people who don’t like fruitcake have usually never tasted a good old fashioned fruitcake. Your recipe looks delicious too. I love your videos.

I will say in my travels I've run onto the greatest boughten Fruit Cake ever made by Grandma's Fruitcake I found at Walmart; it is to die for. Then I saw it on QVC it sell's out every year. I'm not involved with the company it's just every channel I've been on looking for a good fruit cake recipe that is the first thing 98.9% of the hosts say > how rotten store bought fruit cakes are and I would aggree except for .... Anyway; thanks to you, and one other Southern Bell I'm going to try baking my own, and save $50 bucks this year. I enjoy your channel Phyllis you are a wonderful teacher. I come for a long line of great cooks, bakers , and candy makers, plus I had a wonderful Home Economics teacher I adored. Even so there are s few things I've been spooked about making. You should have been a school teacher, because your so laid back, and kind. Anyway thank you Phyllis for sharing your beautiful gift with us. Thanks for sharing your fruit cake recipe! Mine is very close to yours, except I use a blend of Brandy & Triple Sec in place of the Rum. Also, to really get my fruit boozy, I pour the alcohol over the fruit/nut mixture and let it macerate in the fridge covered for 2 days, then I drain off the alcohol (save for cake) then add the flour to the fruit/ nut mixture - just like you do. Works great!

Thank you for responding, Phyllis. My oven was at 250, and I know it is accurate because on Thanksgiving I used an oven thermometer to check it. In any event, I finally pulled it out and it looks great (not dried out) and I can't wait to try it, but I'll wait the two weeks! Thanks for the recipe for this beautiful cake!!

So sorry for your loss, when we lose someone we love it just leaves a hole in our lives and especially
a parent or a child. Time goes by and it gets better but the hole is still there. I understand.

Thank you for commenting and I'm so sorry for your loss. We lost my dad, my father-in-law and my only remaining Aunt this past spring and my heart is just not in the holiday this year. Your comment gives me hope that eventually the holiday spirit will return even if the hurt never goes away.

I remember my Grandmother making this around the holidays. I have to say it was not like anything you could buy. I might have gotten a little drunk from it too. I am going to try and make something like it soon. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

2019 has not been kind to our dear Miss Phyllis, she has been deathly sick and is going through chemo, so keep her in prayer and sadly Mr. Buckey passed away. Please watch some of her videos to maybe help her.

The "five spice" is known as "quatre épices" here in France and is pepper, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon -- more stuff may be added. The Chinese stuff likely has anise in it and is yet another great kitchen staple. These are mystery ingredients for white sauces, chicken soup, mashed potatoes, braised vegetables, lots of stuff, but only a little is used -- it's sneaky. This is a wonderful clip and I am an American who always appreciated a good fruitcake and I remember making a batch one day with an elderly lady our family knew. She had candied a lot of the fruits herself over the months, and seemed to love slicing things and doing all this and I found it very Zen even as a little girl. Greetings from Paris, France. I subscribed and uprated this.

Looks beautiful and moist. You have the patience of a saint to wait for 2 1/2 hours or the cake to cook....I always make a boiled fruit cake, its so much easier and the cooking time is half. all the wet ingredients together - apart from the eggs which go is last when the mixture is cool - boil them together with any liquid of your choice, rum brandy...I use tea, then I add the flour, cook on the stove on medium for 1/2 an hour let it cool down add the eggs and then pop it into the baking tin and cook for 1.15 min usually on 180 C. Later on I add rum or brandy every week fro 4 weeks and then cover with marzipan and Icing if it is Christmas.

Seems like there were always fruitcakes around Christmas in my family but I never liked the taste of them...though I'd pick out the cherries if I was allowed. Your recipe might be just the thing to make now to bring back memories of my childhood. You are such a good cook that I know I can trust your recipe to be moist and delicious. Even though this is an older video, I'm glad it came up in my RUclips suggestions. I'm wondering if you made this to bless your family with this year... Merry Christmas to you and Dr. Stokes.

As for the rum, I would use Myers Jamaican dark rum. This rum has the best of all in taste of rum, bar none. Best with Egg nogg also

I think I added a bit more of the quantities of fruits & nuts & it made a big square cake tin and a bar tin but only 1/2 full, the bar tin is out the oven, soaked in yummy Rum & the big square one has about 30 mins to go. It’s 2.30am, and Miss Phylis you definitely need a large bottle of Bacardi or there’s none for the cook, while watching Rage - Mardi Gras night waiting for fruit cake to bake 😋
The English way to eat fruit cake is to have it with a bitter crumbly cheese, traditionally Cheshire Cheese, but any aged rich crumbly cheese will do, give it a try, it’s yum! Good balance of flavours 😝 but I’m also going to make rum sauce, gawd if there’s any left 😆🤣😂 another bottle won’t hurt 🤣😂 hiccup 🤭
