  • Thanks to the transcription of the song of the last male Kauaʻi ʻōʻō (Moho Braccatus) made by @AlexanderLiebermann I have been able to make a music box to try to partially capture the beauty of its song.
Unfortunately, the music box requires adapting the original melody to the limitations of the music box, and no instrument can capture the entire song of the extinct bird anyway.
The hope, however, is that this setting of the Kauai Oo's song to music will somehow help preserve his song for later generations who won't be lucky enough to hear him sing live.
For those unfamiliar with the story, this is the song of the last male of the Kauai Oo species, a native Hawaiian bird that became extinct in 1987. It is the song of a male calling for a female that will never come.
