It's pretty rough when you have some bad seasickness which you can't escape. Lenny and Riley at the helm as we wrangle some bad weather at the very first stretch of our foray into the Atlantic. The Azores better be worth it!
Bonus: Riley puts on his meteorologist hat for a forensic post-mortem of the journey to the Azores. Every hour and day matters and timing, as you'll see, is so critical to planning and executing our journeys.

Loved Riley's assessment at the end..... Seldom that a person will acknowledge "Hmmm, maybe I didn't get that just right." Riley did. kudos to him.
I totally agree. Respect!
Captain Colcord defined seamanship as "an attitude and way of life, which face facts, which deal in realities without evasion, which know that the only failure is dishonesty and that error is truth betrayed."
An old saying I live by. The Man who never made a mistake never did anything.
The way I heard it, Riley had East and West mixed up a couple of times. Probably just me. I wish I had his experience.
Sailing La Vagabonde Now Elayna Says What?
Thank you so much for the extra info at the end of the video! We so so appreciate it as new sailors trying to learn as much as we can :)
Yes, thought really valuable explanation at end, thank you 👍👍👍🗺️ ⛵⚓
Yes I also loved the little extra.
Yes the info is good to hear
I agree, thanks for that Riley!
Meted / ucar ... Free weather and meteorology courses
Love the discussion of the weather and the thinking process that goes into plotting a course.
So much goes into sailing in terms of planning and then technical execution. That’s most of the reason I love it😍
Watch how to sail oceans channel
Sound Of Samadhi really adds another dimension to the channel. I like how it was just a tidbit too, as too not overwhelm us
More discussions on the passage planning would be great.
Knowing nothing about sailing other than what I watch on your channel, it was very helpful to hear your explanation of the mistakes you made. Clearly you’ve sailed through rough seas before so I couldn’t understand why this crossing made everyone so sick. Your explanation really helped. I love the “why” of things that I don’t understand. So thanks for that!
The sailing info at the end is the primary reason why I watch these videos. More please!
h533feg yeah! Less soap and more sail!
You should really consider adding more technical sailing information like this video, at least at the end of the videos. I know a lot of people agree with me. Even though I have never sailed, it is super interesting.
Seconded!
I agree. I’m always wondering why. Why did you put up the gennaker? Is it? Why do you have the different sails? Why do they have to come down if there’s no wind? Can’t you just wait? That was another video.
What were you cutting off the steering cable thingy and why was that there? Why don’t you travel in yacht pods?
As a private pilot, I was taught to create a set of personal minimums (& maximums) that are used in decision making for every flight. Sounds like Riley just bumped into the need to re-evaluate his. Congrats on your post trip assessment, your lessons learned will make you a safer, better sailor, and better loved by your family! Be well, be safe, enjoy the Azores !
You're a true legend, Riley.
The explanation of the weather and your decisions was fascinating. Perhaps you could add a little information about the sailing decisions for each sail you do and then compare the decisions you made with the reality of the actual sail. I know I would love to see that. Maybe you could put a little segment in at the end of each video that features a sail?
Everyone that has ever sailed goes through this. Do the planning, sail, evaluate the planning, learn, adjust, rinse and repeat.
Elayna, Lenny, and Riley are among my most favorite people. Sail on Legends. Sail on.
love this comment, I hope they see this 🙌🏼
Mark Tetreault yes to this!👏
I agree wholeheartedly. Really enjoyed the explanation at the end.
Mark Tetreault agree as well. As a sailor myself when you are the captain you need to know these things.
@@SailingLaVagabonde That would be great!
It’s refreshing to hear someone do an honest assessment of what they got themselves into. As an aircraft pilot you experienced a couple of things we experience in aviation. The first is something we call “get thereitis”. Pilots sometimes can’t overcome the urge to “get there” and will let logical weather assessment be ignored. The other thing you experienced was complacency. With your vast sailing experience, it is easy to let your guard down because you have been successful with dealing other weather conditions and in some situations, even worse weather.
When you find yourself in these situations, it is probably best to listen to that little Riley on your shoulder asking “what the hell are you doing mate?” 😉
Well said! I was about to make a similar comment about hazardous attitudes and how get thereitis is a manifestation of a hazardous attitude. The ability to recognize those thoughts before they become actions is always good. The ability to look back and admit you made a mistake and learn from it is a sign of a wise airman/sailor.
Riley's after-action weather critique shows he continues to mature from sailor to experienced mariner by taking into account the comfort and well-being of the passengers and crew.. Well done.
Hey Riley ! I'm not a sailor, nor have I ever sailed on a boat. But as an engineer I do enjoy the way the wind, currents, the boat and the sails work.
Thank you for that extra bit of information.
I enjoy every second.
Keep it Up guys.
Enjoy the azores islands. I'm keeping a track on you guys. . The moment you guys hit a feasible location I'm flying out to meet y'all !!
❤️✌️
I don’t know a lick about sailing and I love learning all you have to teach. Keep it up THANK YOU
OMG, Lenny giggling and looking at the earbud before returning to listen to Jazz made the whole video fo me! 😍
I LOVED the addition of animation in the previous video, and the walkthrough of the weather was very interesting - it just shows how much planning goes into it, would love to see more.
Hey guys. Riley, we’ve watched for a long time and this is the first time I’ve ever felt compelled to comment. I think it’s really impressive how open and honest you are about what wasn’t good about your decision making in this. It’s never easy to take a good hard look at these things, and I think you deserve kudos for doing it on such a public forum. Same applies to your comments about your mental health, and the picture we get of your lives. Only boaties (like us) get that it’s never just champagne sailing, it’s the ups and the downs that make it worthwhile. It’s excellent that you point out these things to your audience. Again, well done mate. Well done!
Yes enjoyed the weather debriefing; In aviation we call it building weather (cumulus/nimbus cloud formations) and dissipating weather (dark bottom/tall nimbus); building (up draft) dissipating (down draft, often rain).
I thought that sailors must have to deal with similar issues that pilots have in navigating aircraft around storm cells, and also when closer to the ground during landing or takeoff. Although sailing craft don't get problems with turbulence from wing vortices of other aircraft, it seems that downdrafts and updrafts of adjacent clouds creates localised weather that can be as powerful as that caused by geographic features such as cliffs and mountain ranges.
There's lots to learn about air movements in the open ocean, modified by local weather events, and its an interesting topic for Armchair Sailors to hear about. The powerful effects of localised weather is not just restricted to sail-driven watercraft. Large "slab-sided" motor vessels can run into extreme danger when they lose engine power, as evidenced by the recent tragedy of a capsized live cattle transporter off the coast of Japan. At least yachtsmen have several options such as storm sails and drogues they can deploy to keep the craft heading into wind, which are not normally available to powered vessels.
I’m not a sailor but i find all of the factors that go into the decision making process for sailing etc so fascinating x
There was a shot earlier, with a pole holder in the background, and I literally mentioned to Lynn, "Riley hasn't fished in a long time."
Also, the weather lecture was very good. Riley, your humble nature is refreshing and reassuring. Your passengers and crew should appreciate the honesty.
Yep....same....would love to see more fishing. It was the combo of sailing, exploring new destinations and fishing / diving that kept me hooked
I like when you get specific and nitty gritty about the sailing
I'm ex US Navy and have seen heavy seas. I respect the both of you so much! You must if nothing else feel SO alive.
Your son has a rich environment to grow up in. He is a lucky boy and you are two are brave parents. I wanted to keep my son's safe and expose them to a wide variety of experiences. There was loads of information on how to do that while living on dirt and still I felt pressure.
You two are figuring it out with far less resources than I had. You are the resource for others. My hats off to you mates.
Watching Lenny listening to music with ear pods.. It is gorgeous!
Hello! I lived in the Azores for 2 yrs. LOVE and MISS the people and the place. Glad you made it.
I am portuguese and I am very happy to see you visit my beautiful country, even though I live in the mainland! You'll love it!!
We ALL learn from our mistakes. Sharing them shows confidence. What you planned and what actually happened was awesome........do more of that.
riley talking about his mistakes:
me watching the knives in the background waiting for them to move: 👁👄👁
😂😂😂
I do agree and did the same, as an expert Knife Thrower myself even I store my knives in a drawer.
Everything has it's own risk. Deciding to always leave it in a drawer means that while you're using it you might tend to put it on the counter for a moment then a wave hits and the knife is on the floor or slid across the counter a bit without you noticing then you forget about it because you don't see it any more. And those magnets are strong. It's just not really a good look.
Storing them like that has bothered me since beginning. A rogue wave capsizing boat would knock them loose...disaster!
@@Steve21945 on a serious note, out of sight out of mind but Lenny is faster now and getting faster, climbing and adventuring to new spaces around the Cat. When I was a kid my parents did not put a cover over a hole in the wall after the plug fell out, can you guess what happened? My finger was exploring faster than you can say "Gotcha" and I flew across the floor, biggest shock of my life, was very very lucky to survive. I don't poke my fingers into holes in anything anymore.
I LOVE y’all’s simple appreciation....
You made it! Another fun journey for those of us stuck behind a desk. Thank you.
Knowledge is power...so yes, a post trip break down is most valuable both for your vlog’s sailors as well as the perpetually curious sojourners of life’s adventures and experiences!
You're a real team, the respect you show each other even while making mistakes is the true lesson...
Ya'll as blessed of a couple as I have ever seen. I'd guess it's very hard work, and getting sick is awful. Still from were I sit your freedom is awe inspiring. Keep it up. All us landlocked folks in small apartments and houses love it!
Glad you made it safe! Riley was super interesting and the Girls rallied so awesome 👏 ❤️ Lenny as always. Cheers 🥂
I really think your analysis of weather and sailing conditions is a strong suit for you, I personally really enjoy it as a sailor. Thanks guys. Nice job.
Seeing Elayna smile again brought me to tears. Beautiful smile, even more of a beautiful soul.
Wow. A man who can self critique his own work and teach others on his mistakes. I take my hat off to you Reily, every time I watch your videos you teach me something new. Keep up the good work. Happy sailing to you all!!
Het Riley, your last piece on the sea state, and the winds was awesome. Would love to see more of that.
Really appreciated the analysis at the end Riley! Nobody is ever done learning, in my opinion, and picking up some "virtual experience" from someone else's experience is great! Thank you!
Yes Riley! Would love to see more captain's insights from you!
Would defo like to see Riley do some more videos on the challenges of sailing. As you guys have said before we only seen the good times so would be interesting to see all the thought and planning that has to go into such a sail
I love the episodes adventure and the life. We as humans learn from our mistakes and it’s very important that we acknowledge this as a great source of knowledge. In your early videos you both had your hot seat where as one person would sit down and acknowledge their mistakes and then make suggestions of the lesson learned I truly thought this was amazing. I’m curious if you look back now and over five plus years of accumulated knowledge how valuable this was. Thank you both for being you don’t ever change!!
Humble humans ...! Thank you for letting us sail with you and be a part of your lives, what a privilege .
Love hearing Riley’s wind and routing analysis!
Not everyone is here for the sailing information, but they can easily skip through! For your sailing followers, we love to hear what you learn out on the water, so we can take it to practice for ourselves!
Great video and great content! May your sails be filled with good fortune!!
really love Riley's explanation at the end, as it was said "learn from mistakes of others, you can't live long enough to make them all yourself"
Riley, it was a pure joy hearing and learning a bit about those weather conditions you all faced. Loved the graphics! Thanks for sharing you guys are awesome! Cheers...
Riley, keep up with the technical sailing and weather information, much appreciated!
I do not usually comment on videos but this video stood out to me. I am one who also suffers from seasickness, motion sickness and vertigo. I loved seeing Elayna’s vulnerability in this video. Expressing the time that had lapsed in the video helps point this out. This expression of the amount of time that we see, as an audience, of your lives is very important to to realize what’s really going on in life.
That’s it.
I love you all and and this channel.
It keeps my land legs happy.
Thanks for the video guys. Riley I like the debrief at the end. My wife and I are about to make a crossing so definitely helps.
Loved the extra sailing lesson from Riley! Hope you keep on doing those
While I love seeing the ‘happy times’ on board, I think it’s important to see the realities that come with this lifestyle, 48 hrs of sea sickness . . . with a crying child no less, all while trying to navigate through rough seas, but the in the end, it makes you appreciate the little things, like a pretty purple sail & chocolate. Cheers!
Please keep explaining the weather and experience, wrong or right,it helps us all learn, thanks Riley 😊👍🏻
Great video I liked all the waves and heavy seas action and the weather briefing at the end was a very satisfying extra thx.
thanks for the details Captain. glad everyone is safe & sound
I understand the effort required sailing in bad weather Riley, and I know you did well. Sorry that the crew was so sick for a while. Lenny is growing up, such a gorgeous personality and congratulations to you and Eleyna. Great story telling and a privilege to sail along. God bless Good Winds - Pete
Really appreciate the more advanced discussion of weather! I know a lot of people who watch the channel may not be there just yet, but for those of us who are further along in our learning, it helps to hear your perspective and analysis for passage planning and other topics. Most channels out there are geared toward showing how new sailors learning, and it's nice to see videos where the discussion is at a more advanced level.
Love watching, that would be miserable being sea sick and not being able to do much! So glad you got over it and felt better, love the smiles!😁❤️
Thanks, Riley! Yes, we definitely liked that added tidbit at the end about voyage planning and what you are looking at, in this case you were sharing your mistakes and that is still helpful! We definitely appreciate those bits that you add in! Cheers!
Good work Riley on the breakdown on what mistakes/unexpected issues that happened. Glad everyone is feeling better too and were able to enjoy the last bit of the crossing. Thx for keeping it honest about life on a sailing vessel.
Weather is fascinating in its own right, and sailing weather calculations are even more interesting. Keep up the weather briefs, Riley. Much appreciated, even for us armchair sailors. I own a classic Herreshoff 12 1/2 but can’t sail this summer due to an injury. La Vagabonde’s adventures are a balm for my soul.
Awesome weather debrief of the crossing Riley .... experience is the best teacher and wisdom learns from others mistakes :) Thanks for sharing mate !
Or, today's wisdom are last nights mistakes...
Enjoyed the introspective Riley! We learn more from our mistakes than our successes!
The honest assessment at the end makes it real. Having sailed most my life planning for the worst is the norm but Riley - crew is two ladies and a baby. Lower the max wind you would face by a bunch and sail forever without worry.
VERTICAL Wisdom those two ladies kick arse💪🏼 and that baby has some solid sea legs👶🏼😜
There is no issue with the crew being two ladies.
@@sarmace Unless you need upper body strength to move freakin sails out of a locker and around the deck in a storm.
@@sarmace there is now. Because of you. Grow up.
I’m remembering who Riley asked to crew with him to sail Greta Thunberg back to Europe..... oh yeah..... a ‘lady’.
I’m young. Don’t have a boat. Never been sailing. BUT I loved the weather/decision making ending. I love y’all family. I love y’all channel!! Stay Blessed
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing your bad decisions and learning factors, as this can be a learning curve for a lot of us on this side. Cheers
Thanks so much for the analysis of the sail Riley. It is through a review of our decision making that we learn and gain knowledge. I learned a valuable lesson one day in port when I left a service dock and had to turn the boat around in the harbor with a strong crosswind. I told the Harbor Master that I didn't feel comfortable with the maneuver and thought I might get blown into other boats. He agreed and said it is the foolish sailor who is afraid to admit when he needs help. With a few creative lines and the help of some dock hands we were able to turn the boat around and head out of port without incident. By the way, I appreciate how you take Lenny into consideration in your analysis.
Juggling a child at home when your partner is down is tricky enough. Let alone on a boat.
Good work team.
Fascinated by the cloud info as well.
Thanks.
I think the assessment at the end shows just how much can be involved in what seems like a simple decision to us who have never sailed.
Great weather debrief, always good to learn a little more.
I have to admit, sometimes I feel a bit sea sick just watching you all sail. But I enjoy your little family so much I can’t stop.
Lenny is a tank. The rough seas don't seem to bother him at all.
Right I also noticed like he is kinda officially exempted and relieved from getting seasick, it's for the adults only :)
Knowledge is key. Thanks Riley great video and happy you guys are on land now no more sea sick 👍
I’m learning to sail and I personally loved that additional info Riley! Excellent! Excellent! Excellent.
Please keep the informational sections!!! I enjoy seeing the adventures, but love the learning. Thank you for being everyones buffoon. Much appreciated.
Man I love listening to people speak expertly on a subject I know nothing about. Technical explanations are just cool no matter how you look at it lol
I like to that means you're a life long student of the world.
Your videos are always very interesting, I am not a sailor just a powerboater I still find your knowledge very useful.
Bet that was a HUGE relief!! We were relieved to finally see a new country appear over the waves on the horizon 😊🙌🏼
As a dreamer of sailing and a technical thinker, all your information about sailing is well received by me and I'm sure by many. Thank you for all you do.
I really like the weather content, especially with the real-time application of how it’s affected your crossing.
Riley, mate, you are spot on sharing your experience with us. I loved your assessment, analogy, and visual aids to explain what you were thinking when you made your sail plans and the reasons why, etc... My admiration for you has grown exponentially! Plus, I love the way you take care of Elanya, Lenny, and your crew. You are amazing.👍
Enjoyed the wind/weather/route debrief info!
I've watched thousands of sailing videos so it is rare that I learn anything new about technique or navigation. This time I did so thanks a lot for sharing!
Well, I'm glad you all made it safely. I hope the Azores are all you expected, and I wish I were there to see it too.
Always nice to go back and watch one of your older vlogs. Always thrilling.
I can't wait to see the São Miguel video. I lived there for 8 years and I miss it so badly. It's the most beautiful place I've ever been and the people are just the best.
I would like to see more of the weather and passage planning. Also more of the maintenance and little problems. But always just be safe love and hugs to all.
I liked the sailing info at the end! I wasn’t sure it would be interesting but it was. I would love more
Riley, thank you for sharing - we love your honesty and true passion for the sailing life. We're glad you are all safe and feeling better! Cheers!
The weather explanations were very interesting and helpful. Thank you.
Riley, your humility is humbling...
Riley... maybe that's why you were saying you were nervous in the previous video about the trip...? it was your intuition telling you to re asses your plan?
My thoughts as well. Listen to your gut
Great explanation. Love the honesty. This type of planning is extremely interesting. Love it and need more. Tell pants.as if she is not monitoring the replies! Live big and document it for us. Great channel.
I have been following the channel for awhile now and my 18 month old falls asleep at night only after checking in on his buddy Lenny. I really enjoyed the breakdown on your decision making and the honesty about how you plan your route, I would love to see more of that sort of content! Thank you! I look forward to following you Azores adventure.
i really like the openes about how thing are!
Lenny is a super sweet lil pumpkin. Sorry to hear about the uncomfortable part of your journey to the Azores, especially for Elayna and her friend. I liked the lessons learned part of the video. No need to feel like a buffoon, Riley.
I like bonus "education" segments on important aspects of the JOB of crusing. And as you said in the video, the non-camera events do take place and there is a lot of living that goes on. It is great to have some of it spoken about. Keep It Real
Yes, Reilly, anytime you can add to my black box is appreciated. It’s fun watch Lenny and Elena and all the family dynamics but the practical sailing info is just if not more important. Great job guys, as always.
Sailing notes: you raise some very interesting points about this trip, Riley. Wondering whether Predict Wind gave you a comfort setting as well.
Thanks. Yes I am grateful for the sailing advice at the end. “Confessions of a wayward captain” I can imagine how nerve racking it is. Best wishes, Phil
Yes!! I enjoyed the wind tracking as I follow several sailing shows and I’m always looking at Perdict winds app as to try and follow along. Showing your route and what you might have done differently is very intriguing and adds a new layer of content that is fantastic. Keep it up. ⛵️☀️👍🏻
Riley, love your honesty in making the mistakes with the weather and showing us at the end. Very interesting and hopefully helpful for when I finally get a chance to escape for the high seas.
I'll reiterate a lot of other comments that I'd actually love to hear more from you about the technical aspects of sailing (as I have no experience myself). Infographics/weather maps and your explanation is really cool and helpful for folks like me that hope to get into sailing at some point :)
