I think it would be logical to assume that Viktor's arm around Yuuri's neck and his other and in Yuuri's hair was to protect his brain and spine from being body-slammed into the ice. It shows a more trusting aspect to the kiss: Viktor, in that position, would have likely bruised his elbow while Yuuri, instead of flailing his arms out to the side as humans are naturally inclined to do, hugged Viktor to him- believing that Viktor would keep him safe.

Yuuri literally proposes to Victor in the airport when he comes back from the competition in Russia (I'm pretty sure that's the one. Whichever one Victor had to leave early from). Traditional Japanese proposals are different than the grand Western "Will you marry me?" special occasions. They tend to be more indirect and somewhat private affairs with phrases like "will you tie my tie for me every day" or "do you want to grow old together" (i.e. "Will you be my coach until I retire?") and Victor responding with "I hope you never retire" was him totally accepting the proposal. Modern proposals in Japan tend to be a bit more Western, but Japanese audiences would definitely recognize that dialogue for what it is.

The arm was there because he was protecting Yuuri's head from the ice they were about to fall back on. It's really not any more complicated than that. If the arm was positioned low, only his fingers would be between Yuuri's head and the ice, and that just isn't enough. Viktor has fallen enough on the ice to know that.

Thst really makes sense because I also know how hard the ice is if you fall on it (especially with your head) since I live in a Nordic country where we technically try skate to school in the winter and if you just fall on your butt it hurts a lot so, yea a hand will be very helpful in this case.

I hate the argument about the arm. It was obviously supposed to be a kiss. The shots before and after (Yuri's eye shooting open, Victor's eye closing, and the audience's reaction) help with that conclusion, and why would everyone assume/congratulate with open arms the two's engagement if they didn't know anything about it up to that point (there isn't a single "wait, you two are together?" during that scene. They all know, because they literally kissed on live television)

I've seen a lot of discourse about the pose used in the kiss scene
As an animator I can tell you it feels like a necesary pose, not because the arm covers the kiss, but on a anatomy/movement/intent level.
Since victor is tackling yuri in this scene you have 2 ways of doing that while making your characters weight noticeable, pushing him from the hips or his shoulders
To push him from the hips, victor would have to hug yuri with his whole upper body to tackle him down.
And theres no way a kiss is happening if you do that .
And if they animated it in a way where he pushes yuri with his arms down it would look unatural to say the least.
Theres also the question then of why they make victor do that tackle, but it's obvious is to give it emotion and excitement.
Moving the camera wouldnt help to be honest.
I think it is pretty obvious it was a kiss.
Because of the ephasis on the lips, the closeness and their expressions. Only really clueless, or in denial would think it was a hug.
It used all the right shots to make it clear it was a kiss.
I would have added them separating their lips from eachother when they hit the floor maybe, to make sure it was super clear, but honestly is not necessary and it would feel like overkill.
At least that's what i feel from my experience.

Yeah, a lot of gay anime is really 'rapey' tbh (especially Yaoi). My straight friend loves some Yaoi shows that I personally hate because they're pedophillic, rapey, or both. It just seems to fetishize gay relationships, instead of represent them. Which is why I love No.6 so much; it has a gay relationship that is vital to the plot, but isn't the entire story. It's just so frickin beautiful and I would recommend it to anyone who likes anime or gay stuff

Personally i think what was going through Kubo's mind while deciding on "censoring" the kiss is that Yaoi and Yuri are already filled with same sex kisses that mean nothing to a queer audience. That an on screen kiss wasn't important compared to the love Viktor and Yuuri feel for each other and how she wanted to deliver that love to the audience. I don't mind that the kiss wasn't explicit, but i can see how showing it would've made history.

The airport reunited scene after Makkachin gets sick and Viktor has to go back to Japan is such an underrated scene, everyone is like “the kiss scene! Omfg!” But like they literally could not wait 5 seconds to be together in that airport. They started running, my dude, running. And not to get to a terminal. That’s not a smart thing to do considering an age of terrorism and shit. Yuuri RAN IN PLACE waiting for the auto doors to slide open. And that second when they are finally in the same room again is a sigh of relief. And such a dear hug. As a single person, I don’t hug ANYBODY that close and tight except my parents. Not even my sister gets that treatment. You have to truly love someone to be that intimate in a public place, especially in eastern culture, which is probably why the background characters were staring. The proposal is just the icing on the cake of that deeply genuine sequence...and then Makkachin wanting to join the hug as the camera zooms out...goddamn. If Yuuri’s final free skate wasn’t so poignant, especially when it ends with the ring hand gesturing towards Viktor, or if the ending pair skate followed by Yuuri running across the bridge to Viktor with “We call everything on the ice love” in the background and then being SO HAPPY to see each other and then it cuts to black with Viktor’s “Yuuri!”
if those moments weren’t the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen then the airport scene would be my favorite. But it’s still my favorite underrated scene.

I mean, yeah, they might be out there right now, but if they are, *I* certainly haven't heard of them.

Interesting. I have a few thoughts on this.
In a recent interview, Kubo said that she found it funny how oversea fans needed confirmation of that scene in episode 7, yet Japanese fans didn't seem to need any. I also read something on twitter, when somebody expressed that Japanese media, and even the language itself, is pretty ambiguous- for western viewers, that scene may have appeared to be very implicit, but to people in Japan I think that the romance is pretty clear cut.
I don't think that the arm needed to be removed- I didn't even question whether it was a kiss, and I just enjoyed that moment for what it was. I think it's a pretty sad reflection on our world that people actively argue with others about whether or not it was a kiss; we all know if yuri was a girl, it wouldn't be disputed. Yuri on ice is the kind of anime that often reflects who you are as a person and teaches many lessons (at least, that's what it's been like for me), so we should let any ambiguity be settled in our own minds.

To be fair, even if it wasn't ever actually explicit, it was also pretty impossible to interpret as straight guys being friends. Straight guys don't exchange engagement rings, nor talk about seducing each other. You could argue fanservice, but it's not just suggestive touching either - there are clear emotions involved, on both ends. I don't know how anybody could interpret it as 'just straight guys being pals'.

I feel like the purpose of the arm is to A) stop Yuuri's head from smashing on the ice, and B) keep the moment somewhat private, and for just between the two of them (as they were on international TV). But anime has the ability to defy physics laws and show scenes that aren't possible with a real camera and real actors, thy could have fit the "camera" behind that arm so we can see their lips, and I wish they did that.
WeiYinChan It could be a kiss or not. The maker of yuri on ice could've given you a chance to make a decision for the characters. i did some reading, and the reason they didnt show the kiss without the arm is to avoid changing thr genre of the anime to yaoi, as thatd make the show seem to be focused on viktor and yuuri's relationship instead of yuuri's character development, and therefore cause the anime to be less revolutionary snd stuff

They can be... but most of it is written by straight women. And you can tell in the animation style or the "power dynamics" (top and bottom), that they really give their characters really gender based rolls. It just feels really forcibly straight despite being of the same gender.
Also there is a genre of male/male romance written by and for, gay men in Japan, and this genre is called "Bara." And shows more real depictions of men, and what the relationship looks like from their perspective.

The main reason I love this show so much is exactly because of the way they choose to be so subtle about the physical aspects of Yuri and Victor's relationship. I've watched every yaoi out there and I was always disappointed.
Yuri on Ice is one of a kind. A story about figure skating that happens to have this wholesome couple in the background and you can tell with every episode that they grow closer and closer but you don't get to see anything because there's no need, it's just a couple falling in love.
If you pay close attention you can tell that they are really progressing behind the camera, with their hotel beds pushed together and Victor wearing Yuri's coat. They became a couple and you don't have to know all the details because it's their personal affair, just like it happens with every couple on real life. Amazing!

This anime is seriously the best thing to come from 2016. the characters are so adorably relatable, can be easily interpreted as neurodivergent, (like Yuri having an anxiety disorder) the music is amazing, the art is beautiful, the humour is awesome. It shows not only a relationship between two men of completely different cultural backgrounds, but also how family and friends inspire you. how all kinds of people come together because of their shared passion for skating, how growing as a person can happen to anyone.

So Minkao-sensei actually says "This would tug at the heartstrings more if it were a younger, more naive man. Not a hottie like Victor, but..." while watching Victor's skate (which as we know Yuri is skating at the same time in parallel). We also know that Yuri is both younger and less experienced in love than Victor. I'm surprised that people miss the reason why Victor makes such a "sudden" or "unexpected" decision to become his coach when it's so clearly foreshadowed by Minako-sensei. Of course, later in the show there's the reveal about Yuri asking Victor to be his coach during a Gala event at which Yuri got very drunk. But, before the audience even knows that it's pretty well established WHY the video of Yuri did **tug at the heart strings** of Victor.
For anyone curious: Kubo really loves her work and she actually said that, when writing the characters, they started to feel like real people so they treat them like such. Not showing actual kisses or anything too explicit was, quoting her, "a way of respecting [Yuuri and Viktor's] privacy" (I suppose in a country as reserved as Japan, even a kiss is considered PDA). So there you have it.
Besides I'm pretty sure Yuuri would've broken his neck against the ice if Viktor's arm wasn't there.

The author made the comment comparing it to the kiss scene in a drama that airs in Japan at the same time that YOI but it was the Director who confirmed that was a kiss. Due to western fans bugging them.
If you look at a Japanese show with a western view, then of course you won't get what the show was telling you.
Japanese literature and filmography are drawn to aimai あいまい, which is a trait of the ambiguity. It's a cornerstone to understand Japanese narrative and YOI wasn't subtext, it was in plain view if you saw the show with a Japanese POV. Nothing was "left to imagination" because that's how narrative goes, that's their explicit text.
Also the arm was to cushion the fall, Viktor DID jump Katsuki and he doesn't want to split Katsuki's head in two on ice.
The maneuver was practiced and seen as that because if you jump someone wanting to grab their head and kiss them WHILE FALLING, unless you are in a bed or a cushioned place, well...you cushion the fall.
That was also explained by the Director on her twitter to only western fans.
No one in Japan doubted a thing. For them it was as explicit as any kiss in scene, lips showing.

That's a term you can't apply to Japan because they don't bait the lgbt+ community, they DON'T CARE about them. When they put homosexual fanservice it's always for girls. No one else. This doesn't work like western media.
And even with that, Kubo was giving them actual representation with the series and this is a work she's been doing in other anime, like Lupin III and Psycho Pass.
That's why the show is revolutionary, it's giving them representation in Japan, by Japanese standards. That's huge.

Honestly when first I saw episode 7 scene, I assumed the anime was saving the full-blown kiss for the final episode thus not wanting cheapen it by spoiling the audience too early. (My theory ended up being WRONG but the pair skating makes up for it in my opinion...)

the duet definitely makes up for it! Victor who has devoted his everything to skating before he met Yuuri and Yuuri who expresses and calms himself through skating. Seeing them skate to a love song together in front of the world and in such an intimate way is like witnessing a declaration of love. I personally think it’s more loving than actual love making, I almost felt like I was invading their privacy. 🙈

When I watched this anime, I loved how Victor and Yuuri never had a "label" for their relationship (yes, I agree there were a lot of ambiguity in their relationship - interesting ones, though), yet they managed to make it explicitly clear that they were soulmates.
There is so much more depth to love than just the physicality. We know Viktor and Yuuri care for each other--it's hinted in even the most subtle ways. For example, in episode ten, we can see that their beds are pushed together. Love isn't about declarations of love, kisses, and sex; it can be expressed simply by how much one person cares for another. While an uncensored kiss could have been nice, it doesn't serve as the "end all be all" for their love. Chist, Viktor even admits that the rings he and Yuuri are wearing are engagement rings and that they will be getting married once Yuuri wins gold. I don't think Yuri on Ice needed an uncensored kiss. The problem is that we have been so accustomed to one portrayal of love in media, and anything that doesn't fit into that narrow box isn't considered love. Just my thoughts at least.

I just love Yuri on ice because how elegant and beautiful Viktor and Yuri's love are ! The creators didn't rush their relationship (like a lot of other yaoi animes) the creator didn't sexualized their relationship (like a lot of yaoi stories) they also didn't use unrealistic things like "destiny", "love at first sight", "meant for each other since the beginning" (also like other yaoi stories :D). It's just so clear how in love they are even though there are no overly sexual interactions, and they manage to make it happens in 12 episodes without the feeling that they're rushing it ! IT'S BEAUTIFUL
