With Ryan's ruclips.net/user/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE plan, I was like one taken by the hand and led step by step from start to finish. Thank you very much Ryan!
Happy birthday Scott. I'm from Bolton, Fred Dibnah was a hero of the town. His house was up the road from where I lived, he had steam locomotives and a mine shaft he excavated himself in his garden. There is a big statue of him in the town centre.
Great shout out for Fred Dibnah. Growing up in the UK he was a real character and I loved his enthusiasm for the industrial revolution and the innovations that brought about, like steam engines.
He was a "man's man", had brass balls the size of Mellon's; just watch him knocking in metal hooks in to the big round chimney and winching up ladders with him as he goes, no harness, just a long bit of rope, some metal hooks with little bits of rope on each (5 foot if I remember correctly (he was completely imperial in all he did, no metric for him)) a hammer and enough ladders to get to the top with small crossovers between each ladder and some wooden off stands at each end of the ladder. As a child I was in awe of him, he was so brave and almost super hero like. Loved seeing all his steam and coal powered industrial kit that he had installed in his garden, was a legend. RIP Fred.
He was an awesome guy to watch. Best thing was there wasn't much health and safety bs back then these days you would need 50 grands worth of scaffolding round a chimney not to mention all the hazard awareness forms filled out. While he would be up there after lunch having had 3 or 4 pints with his cheese butty
Love the fred Dibnah series. I remember the first time watching it & hes on top of this chimney about 400 feet high. The could feel the piss rolling down my leg. No shit
theres a very relaxing quality about your personality, and style of your videos. just a few hours ago i was panicking about work, so i put your videos on as BGM, and now i'm a lil calmer. so thanks for the content Scott! you really make the tough demolition and renovation work look easy.
Hi Scott, not only was he a nutter when it came to knocking down chimneys and he liked nothing better than scaring the locals and sometimes even the people he was working for, but he had another skill as a stand-up comic and their wasn’t a dry eye in the house from laughing so much. Another character you want to check out was “Blaster Bates”, his stories will have you rolling on the floor with laughter.
Oh man Fred Dibnah is the man! The way he climbs industrial chimney's with no ropes or scaffold or anything, a different world back then. Crazy skills, and balls!
I am in NZ and took my chimney out this year. Though mine was made of rectangular concrete interlocking preforms. When they came out whole it was great, but when they didn't they had wire ring reinforcing that had to be cut to break them apart. Made a bit of a mess, but now that I have a modern log burner instead of an open firepalce, I love it.
Really enjoying your series of videos on this renovation Scott. Your shoutout to Fred Dibnah made me comment! As I was watching you knock down the chimney I was thinking of Fred. He was a bit of a national institution in the UK, and his programmes were still repeated in the 80s and 90s when I was a boy. So I grew up watching him knock down stuff! The way he disappeared up an indistrial chimneys on ladders alone (no ropes!) was incredible.
I like that you show the careful preparation for your jobs Scott. So many times the guys I work with just want to get the hammers & saws out and it always ends up creating more work overall. It's easy to feel that prep time is wasted time, or worry that the customer will be wondering why you "haven't started yet". I even feel it myself, even though I should know better. In the workshop, unless I'm making sawdust it's easy to tell myself I'm not working or earning. However preparation is always the key to a good, long lasting and better value result. It can be hard to price jobs competitively when you factor in that real-world prep time needed to do first class work. Thank you for showing us that good work takes time and care.
Yes - could not believe you mentioned Fred. I've watched the videos but only not watch them, if you know what I mean. So high up. A legend. Cheers Scot.
@@hesebaby1 His shows would be on tv when I was a kid showing his life of steam with the wife and kids the steeplejacking was what payed for it all, felt sorry for his wife's but he was an mad engineering man with a stout heart, he has an amazing video of him pegging a chimney, I've watched hours over and over when he sounds the hooter and shouts its going ! I'd do that with the missus during hanky panky.
The care and attention that you guys take to your work is now becoming legendary. If only all contractors were like you. Clearing up as you go also makes the job much easier and customers appreciate conscientious attention to the job. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.
Happy (belated) birthday! Keep up the really fantastic videos from all that way across the world... (I’m in the UK). And, yes, Fred Dibnah was quite someone...
Fred Dibnah was/is a national treasure. Love all his videos. My grandfather loved his programmes when they first aired in the 70s-90s, takes me back to my childhood everytime I watch them!
I came across Fred Dibnah on youtube a couple of years ago, amazing, no harness, no scaffold, no nothing. Demolishing chimneys 100mtrs in the air, couldn't get away with it these days. BTW, the area you are working in looks like Windmill Rd, Mt Eden.
Everytime I've done brick demo, I've used a small roto hammer with a chisel bit and set it to hammer only. It makes for short work of breaking the mortar seams allowing for quick brick removal.
Hardest work I ever did was knocking down a chimney on a 3 story house where the chimney terminated in the basement. Knocking it down was the easy part, and quite fun. Carrying all the bricks to the back of the yard in the slushy snow was all Disney in Ice.
My wife is a Boltonian and I’ve just finished watching Fred’s series probably for the third time over the last twenty odd years. If you ever go to Bolton get yourself a Carr’s pastie.
Happy birthday Scott! MidWinter down under doesn't look ANYTHING like it does here in Vermont U.S. 😆 Nice shutout to Fred. He was fearless, hard-working and crazy in equal parts. Won't find another like him now. 👑
HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY Scott thanks for the uploads 👍🏻 from one builder to another you’ve built the best RUclips channel. Honest, friendly and informative... love it keep up the good work boys 🎂🎁🎉🎈
Happy belated Mr. Brown!! Sucks getting old but the knowledge/ experience you have from it is the best part. The job is looking great. You are a good crew.
Happy Birthday Scott! And yes, I grew up watching the TV series Fred made - what a man. He scaled those heights with nothing, we can't remove a 2 storey chimney without scaffolding - how times have changed! Keep up the good work guys!
A very happy birthday Scott, really enjoy watching your work and I’ve learnt a good deal, sadly as I now have terminal brain cancer I can’t do as much myself as I would like but I’m not dead yet and still slowly but surely redoing and rebuilding our home over here in the UK. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of your tips and builds. Cheers martin
Thanks mate, sadly what I have is terminal so I can’t get better as such, but I just keep slogging away until I pop my clogs. If your on facebook you can read my blog ‘Cyril the Arsehole’ all about the tumour, my dark sense of humour and some pics of what I’m trying to get done on our house. 👍🏻😊
@@martinbrunning4532 hi martin. Sorry to hear your news i have terminal lung disease so know what it's like. I just get on with it and still work better than sitting about and thinking
Hi mate, sorry to hear your a member of poxy Cancer club too, yes I’m same as you and just try to keep moving forward, I’m on more meds and stuff now than before to try and keep pace with it all. Redoing our house is helping keeping me going, but as you’ll know it all takes so much longer and seems to feel so much more difficult than before my brain cancer arrived. My head can be like mush somedays not able to remember stuff, which can make doing stuff around the house tricky at best. Watching Scots stuff has helped me hugely to get stuff right and once the plasterer comes next week we will be well on the way to getting downstairs ready for painting. Take care of yourself mate, I over did it a few times rebuilding stud walls and knackered myself out for a few days. All the best mart
Heck yeah! Epic work completed and I really enjoyed watching all the things you needed to consider when removing the chimney. Great soundtrack, editing, and sweet camera moves. Looking forward to the next upload! (Happy Belated Birthday Scott!)
Fred and the over hangs were the ones that got me. Rigging ladders on a 30 degree over hang 200 feet up having spent lunch time in the pub. Balls of bull Best saying, a mistake was not a problem just got you half a day out with the undertaker
Fred Dibner is a superstar, mental, but an old fashioned worker, I had to take down the top of a stack to just inside the loft, hardest job I done for years 3 times as much rubble as I expected, glad the removal of the rubbish was not my part of the job, I just had to get it to ground level, 2 days of real graft for 2 of us and the scaffolder had not put a wheel & rope up to the top so had to pass it down to gutter level nearly killed the pair of us the 1st day, thats hard work
I am actually putting up new siding on my sort of family house. It was built in 1898 but my family has lived on the same site for a lot longer ( probably 200+ years) and the house still has the original siding, And even after 122 years of rain and snow, the original siding is still in decent shape, it has started to rot at the bottom maybe 7 cm up, But the rest of the boards are completely fine. The boards themselves are pretty cool, The widest board was 35 cm wide. And the narrowest board is 27 cm wide.
I was quite surprised to see that the interior brick mortar lines came apart just by hitting them with a hammer! I have a 100 year old chimney on my house, where all of it is exterior brick & mortar, and I doubt that any of it will submit to just being taken apart by hand hammering. I may be wrong. But the above roof brick was rebuilt 20 years ago, and that mortar is like steel! I’m thinking an SDS max rotary hammer will do it. I’ll have to see. Nice video though!

Fred Dibnah. Legend. Well worth watching.
11.40 absolutely! 🇬🇧 My dad used to watch his stuff on tv all the time. A very brave and interesting character.
Ah the good old steeplejacks. A very old and rare trade now in the UK. Fred knew everything about brick structures.
Fred was the best! Love that ole' boy. Sad day when he passed. LEGEND!
Love the fred Dibnah series. I remember the first time watching it & hes on top of this chimney about 400 feet high. The could feel the piss rolling down my leg. No shit

Samuel Lewis Yes especially when he climbs around the scaffold boards at the top.
Stop it - I'm feeling faint!!
Wooden ladders at that

Love the Fred dibnah shout out the man was an inspiration and had balls of steel

Fred was pure quality.
Fred Dibnah was a huge character! Absolutely lovely man! :-)
