It's so great to see our sisters and brothers are giving Latin America a chance. The people in Latin America are so warm and welcoming. I lived in 5 European countries but, I realized that Europe could never be my home. I'm glad I lived there when I did because hatred towards foreigners is on the rise in Europe. Portugal is no different. The Portugal the non-speaking Portuguese Americans see, is not the real Portugal. A country cannot go from trafficking 40% of African slaves and trying to keep them enslaved to welcoming black people. Everyone looks happy, so I glad you chose Panama and Costa Rica.
Thank you so very much. I'm coming to Panama to start my legal work and I've been trying to learn as much as possible. I'm so pleased to learn the information you are providing. Costa Rica was my first choice for a long time but Panama won because of taxes and medical.
Love, love, love! Great stories and great group of people. My family just bought some property on the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica in Cahuita and I'm so glad that we have groups like this to share similar experiences with.

Thanks for watching! Yes, people often think I’m from Panama. I think one of the things African Americans love about Panama is that we “blend” right in! ❤️
I am a permanent resident of Costa Rica, and own a beachfront in Guanacaste, the Pacific side. I have lived in Costa Rica for 13 years. Be aware, visiting and living in a country, are two different experiences! I have lived and traveled in different countries, my entire life. As awesome as Costa Rica is, there are some challenges that people of color experience. No one in country speaks of those challenges. Some of the challenges can be seen on the Atlantic side, with a high Caribbean influence.
Be more specific you cannot use american way of thinking in these other places. People of color aa a solidary movement is not a thing as it is in the U.S
Watching replay.. I enjoyed this interview and glad you all did this. Panama and Costa Rica are my top two places to visit soon with hopes of moving. Can anyone recommend a tour guid for each area?
I enjoyed the show but just a suggestion. The show could probably cover more information if only one person from each country could share their differences. Six people are too many for it to become as productive
No discussion raised on Bocas del Toro ( Panama) and Puerto Limon & Puerto Viejo ( Costa-Rica) living . No conversation on socializing with the LOCAL population .
What does black expats mean? Americans living abroad? Panama and costa rica both have a sizable native black population there. Panama alot more.Your experience as a black person from the U.S will not be the same as a native black person from either of those places who lived there all of their lives gen after gen Black doesn't tell people where you are from, since black people exist exist in other countries throughout latin american and the english speaking caribbean and not just the U.S.A
Hi, very interesting podcast. I just comment about racism in the Caribbean area of Costa Rica. The two gentlemen need to review their history about the province of Limón. It is absolutely not true that the Jamaican blacks needed escorts to go to San José till 1984. Slavery in Costa Rica was abolished already in 1821, and in that moment thee were not many slaves left, first because most were already free and also because they were absorbed and that is why most Costa Ricans have an average of 10% African genes. It was xenophobia more than racism that tried to isolate the Jamaican population. The black families of the rest of Costa Rica were not discriminated against. I can talk from experience, my great grandmother belonged to one of those old Afro Costa Rican families. Even some of the old black colonial families gained a lot of power such as the Cubero, Barahona, Pacheco and Calvo families. Try to get in touch with Quince Duncan, a great Afro Costa Rican intelectual. costarica.un.org/es/145036-el-racismo-no-nace-historias-afrodescendientes

Great information. So happy the borders are fully open so we can explore Panama 🎉
I enjoy that people have to adjust to the positive conservative lifestyle in other countries. This ain't ATL put on clothes and fix your attitudes.

Native people are not Expats in their own country.
Definition of Expat is a person who lives outside their native country.
@Black Expats in Panama® Kinda went over my head.. But it doesn't say where you're expating from? Why it makes sense to say American expats
