  • I love languages. I spent that last few years trying to fit language learning into my schedule, which was not easy.
I don't consider that I speak 8 languages, but I have studied all of them to some extent in the past few years.
The level of proficiency needed to conduct a thorough medical assessment in a language is very high, which I would only be comfortable doing in English or French. Also, it is still somewhat rare to have patients who do not speak at least a little English, or have family at the bedside to translate for them. So honestly, all of this learning remains a hobby, and I wouldn't call it "useful" for medicine, other than being more open-minded about others' cultures.
    Languages in this video:
    1. English
    2. French
    3. Vietnamese
    4. Spanish
    5. Hebrew
    6. Mandarin
    7. Russian
    8. Portuguese
    Thanks for watching!
    - Don

Just a reminder to you, yes you. That wanting to be, aspiring med student; Videos like these make it hard not to compare yourself. Half of these med school RUclipsr are that superhuman godly gifted people to balance life like flipping a coin and it landing on its side. They also more often than not have immense family support financially and mentally. Not saying they are bad for you to watch. Just don’t get yourself caught up in all the “honeymoon” they always portray on youtube. :)

No way!! I'm really into language learning myself. Currently trying to juggle four languages while in medical school lol. I've always been incredibly jealous of Quebecers because you guys were all naturally raised to be bilingual from birth (and tri-lingual if you speak another language at home like yourself!!).

    Awesome video!
Native Spanish speaker here trying to learn Portuguese, we get a lot of Brazilian patients here in New Jersey.
Love learning new languages. So many Filipino nurses here I've actually started to pick up Tagalog as well:)
Keep up the strong work brother!

I was like, “Ok, cool languages. I can understand the English, French, and Spanish so I can just listen instead of reading the subs.” Then you started speaking HEBREW and I had to do a double take bc you were speaking my language! You spoke it really well and I’m pretty impressed that you can use and conjugate it accurately after just 1 year! I’m a premed student, but I love languages a lot. This gave me hope that I can still continue to learn even while in medical school.

heyo, new RN here about your age (speaking of comparing accomplishments! :D. I don't think I've ever met a resident as young as you as of yet), also in Canada. The language I speak at home is Russian, and I've gotta say, I am INCREDIBLY impressed with your pronunciation. I'm used to movie actors and new learners having a very confusing, near incomprehensible pronunciation, and yours was very clear. Your grammar was off a few times but I could understand what you were trying to communicate, and isn't that the point of language in general?

I find if you don’t use the language you’re trying to keep up with you will lose it. I’m not fluent in Spanish but I do know a lot and as you said I find it hard putting the words together to make sense. However the amount of languages you know is impressive.

I know I’m late, but you are an inspiration to me. I want to brush up on my Spanish (I was a Spanish major in college), as well as French. I also want to learn Mandarin Chinese from scratch. However, I am also looking for a job, and plan on going back to college as soon as I am able. This shows that if you can learn EIGHT languages while in medical school, I can study three during this time, as well as in the future. I want to learn more languages in the future, too.

What a cool video, thank you for sharing ! I'm also an MD and can speak six languages, Finnish, English, French, Swedish, Hungarian and German, although French is rusty (although I even worked in France years back) and Hungarian is limited to basic and medical. :) Are you wanting to extend your repertoire? Next I'd love to learn one of the Sámi languages by the indigenius peoples in Lapland, or one of the First Nations' languages in BC, CAN. All the best to you, colleague! 👏

I'm studying languages while I am at the university too, trying to conciliate these activities though I don't have much free time, because it's my hobby. Now I'm trying to get better in English(I still don't speak/write very well) and I'm also learning french(that's a little easier thanks to portuguese, my native language), and I'm in the very very basics of Hindi. Do you have any tips to have more time to study one or more languages while having a busy day like a doctor?

I would find this kind of exhausting, could you make a video on that? Also what are your learning methods? I’ve read that self teaching without learning grammar as if you were a child is better, what do you think about this? Thank you:)

    • @donavanpham

I've tried several ways to learn a language, but found the best results with university classes. I wish I could say I was good at teaching myself, it was just very difficult for me to make it a priority in my schedule. You should try different methods to see what works for you. Regardless of the language or the method, learning a language is hard and requires patience and discipline.

your Spanish is awesome! I would just say practice your r's. you roll them beautifully but in words like "pero", "para" and "ahora" you don't have to roll them as hard as in a word like "perro". they have a much softer sound. nossa seu portugues ta muito bom tambem, só precisa praticar. Queria decirte que ver como tu aprendiste idiomas durante la escuela medica me ha motivado a hacerlo tambien. I also love languages but I chose not to study them while im in school because I thought it would be too much but I won't hold myself back anymore. On to language #5, mandarin
