- Trolling big baits for fall walleye on Rainy Lake in northern Minnesota. Jason Mitchell joins Rainy Lake guide Donnie O’Bert. Deep contour trolling on a walleye fishery driven by a smelt forage base. Running the size 11 and size 13 Northland Tackle Rumble B behind a two ounce bottom bouncer to keep the bait closer behind the boat and follow the sometimes tight contours.
Tips for how to contour troll for walleye and tips on lure selection. Fall walleyes definitely seem to key in on the larger profiles as baitfish like smelt grow through the summer and into the fall.

Those pliers are the best
Fish Nugent with the guitar solo!
Nice
Jason, great video! Good info! your link to the Scheel's Walleye rod shows a different rod - composite handle - no the the cork one you used in this video. Can you post that link, please? Also, are you using the SX-153 D reel? Thanks.

Yes the reel is the 153 size.
hardly any fishing pressure.....first fish shot there was a ton of boats in the background lol
Awesome video! Wanted to ask how you keep that deep diving crank from dragging in the muck on the bottom with a bottom bouncer and a 6 Ft leader ?Thx!
We try to run the crank and bottom bouncer slightly off bottom. If you are getting a bunch of mud on the bill, you are running too far back. As irregular as the contours are, you will crash into the rocks at times.
One more question , do you recommend deep diver (large billed ) baits for this technique like the Rumble B’s most of the time ? Or are shallow divers ok too at that high speed ? What are some of your favorites ?
@@markpowell6240 I like the bigger billed lures a lot in the fall as it seems like they move more water and run more nose down and tail up which gives the fish a bigger profile.
Thx again !!
Can you cast those in shallow water
@@michaelupchurch3769 yes you can
@@JasonMitchellOutdoors okay thank you very much for the information I will try those in the fall time on the pier lake Erie
What was water temp there ? Thx !
Mid to low sixties at the time.
Jason thanks for all your info and tips! You tha man!
Them baits don’t look like any smelt I’ve ever seen
