Caitlin, thank you for the insights. Inspired by you, I've been practicing intuitive eating for some time now. At first I was eating trash most of the time because that's what I THOUGHT I wanted. Then, as I listened better to my body, I also started craving vegetables and lentils and fruit and grain and all sorts of stuff. It's an interesting journey. There is so much stress and shame around our eating habits and it feels amazing to let go of it, at least partially.
I'm recovering (and am almost fully recovered!) from my eating disorder and honestly miss just eating like I did before it. food was an after thought, if I got hungry I ate and it was just that. Even branding eating as 'intuitive eating' still seems like placing too much emphasis on it for me.
I recovered from an eating disorder a few years ago. Even after I considered myself recovered I thought I was still thinking about food so much and it would never go back to normal. But over about a year I found that I got closer and closer to how I was before without even really noticing! It is definitely possible it just takes time! The intuitive eating guidelines are helpful for people who need help giving themselves permission to eat whatever, whenever, but I agree that "normal eating" for me doesn't involve like, mindfully thinking about each bite of food that goes in my mouth and that's how I prefer it.
I love your perspective on intuitive eating being a vegan. There are so many restrictive people on social media that don't give a single shit about their negative influence when showing they just have guac, crackers and a salad during a whole day. You are refreshing and shine such a positive light on the vegan community and eating habits in general, thank you!
I personally go to the grocery store a bit more often but it helps me buy stuff that I might want for the next few days so I dont just grab random stuff that I may not want further on in the week if that makes sense, and it's still roughly the same amount I used to pay
Caitlin, you are your boyfriend are so good together, I can tell he makes you so happy. I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who eats chips and salsa. I work as a teacher, and I was so stressed out yesterday, I had two small bags of potato chips and vegan pizza for dinner. You're young, your neck will heal, I hope your neck feels better soon!!
Ok, so I hope this doesn't come across wrong, but I love that you talked about how mindful eating still is challenging for you. Obviously I really hope for your sake that you'll figure it out, but it's still comforting to know that someone who's been such a rolemodel to me healthwise is going through stuff like this too! I myself really struggle with it, often end up binging on stuff and all that - especially when I'm under a lot of psychological distress. But knowing that you're not alone always helps - after all we are human beings and want to be understood... So thanks so much for talking about this and as always for the great video! I hope your neck will get better soon 💘 kiss Lilly from me 🐶
I started going to the chiro for traction last year after I had my 4th and last babe. After an MRI, they told me I had a herniated disc with no prior trauma...so strange! I'm only 30, but I carried 4 babes to full term, including my identical twins who were nearly 7lbs each at birth! Soo I think my spine & neck were just over carrying such a load for so many years. I used to be super skeptical of chiros but the spinal decompression really works!
Really loved this video! I struggle with food a lot. I am far into recovery from anorexia and am working on erasing negative thoughts and feelings about food in general. Going vegan (your channel being there from the getgo with your vegan starter vids) helped me have positive associations with food! I think about how it nourishes my body and imagine it was fuel now. Also, what's really helped me, in the beginning, is to sit down at a table, put my phone on airplane mode and just sit and eat. I come from a family where we all sit on the couch and watch Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, chat about our days and enjoy our programs but scarf down dinner like it's an afterthought and not a meal! So now, I think about the love and energy I put into my meal and allow myself to really taste and enjoy it! I realized I was full and normally - I would scarf it down and not think about if my portion was too big for how I felt and what my body needed then! I know we all have different but busy schedules - but even just taking your weekend lunch or dinner to sit and eat and enjoy your food - you'll be able to listen to your body and what you need. It's then when I realize - I would love some peanut butter or a piece of dark chocolate. Sending you positive healing in regards to your neck. Hope you have more days where you're feeling good!! PS. Loved the doodle writing in white on the screen!! xx
I totally agree with intuitive eating. I try to do that as well. I’m not vegan, but I have cut down my meat and dairy consumption by quite a bit. However I do indulge when I’m craving certain things. And I don’t feel guilty about it because it’s what I wanted.
I really appreciated the way you talked about intuitive eating! I haven’t been able to do it because I have an eating disorder. Thank you either way, you are such an inspiration! ❤️ And I’m happy your neck is feeling better.
I know I said this before, but you both are a great couple and so blessed to have found each other in this life! I also have scoliosis and neck problems which started whem I was young.
I can totally relate to your neck problems :( got diagnosed with a herniated disc late last year, a chronic injury which has just gotten worse over the years due to not getting it treated properly! Definitely worth taking the time to slow down, rest and repair! Hope you're feeling better soon 🤞😃
Also a point about intuitive eating, if you have been restricting and only been having clean/healthy/whole foods before, your cravings might be junk food at first. Because it’s something you’ve told yourself you cannot have. Once you decide foods are not good or bad, it’s just food, it’s easier to eat what you actually want. Might be chips, might be smoothies. Neither one is ”better”.
For me, the most valuable part of the intuitive eating mindset is about how MUCH I eat. Stopping when I am satisfied vs full has really changed how I feel after food and I have WAY less upper GI issues since doing it. I find there's this natural sort of point I reach where I start eating slower and I've learned to recognize that as my natural stop point that used to just blow past and finish my plate off. It's okay to go for seconds and it's okay to not finish your plate!
I dont know if you always use that peanut butter you had your rice stored in but I do and I buy it because I like to reuse the jar. It makes me feel cool to see you use it!
Yes, I think it is so important. I think if you ask why there are so many ex vegans... They have not listened to their body at all, and listened to what internet and a vegan community did. I realized smoothies wreck my digestion btw when I eat it.
I really appreciate your thoughts on intuitive eating as it’s something I work on every day. Thank you so much for sharing about your scoliosis, it’s a constant struggle for me and my chiropractor of the last 8 years has been instrumental in improving my overall pain reduction. I go once a month and call it my routine maintenance. 🤪 If there’s one thing I can share it’s to never stop moving.
I totally notice a difference between eating when I'm hungry and eating what my body wants when I'm hungry. If I'm hungry and stop and listen to what my body needs (whether it be greens, carbs, fiber, sweets, etc.), I end up eating food that actually leaves me satisfied. Super important to listen to your body. 👍🏻
I believe in intuitive eating and that it's ok to have occasional treats. I also believe if you're craving a,certain healthy food it's because your body needs the nutrients in that food. For example after I had one of my babies I craved dates like crazy. I ate a ton of them. I found out I was a little low in iron after delivery. I also have craved mangoes before and just ate my fill. I figured I needed something in them.
I didn’t really catch exactly what you said but I heard you mention scoliosis and my ears pricked because I have it, I had surgery to correct it in 2014 and have since had all my metalwork removed due to infection. I’m really passionate about scoliosis and back problems in general and I’d love to hear you talk more about it if you want to/feel ready to! 💛
I prepared my beans and chickpeas all my life so far. I dont like canned food. Store them in a container with water and freeze them if u dont plan to use them in up to 2 to 3 days.
Caitlin you're soooooo cool! Like your lifesltyle (not only the vegan style, but how you combine your recipes and thoughts about the life) is very inspiring for me! I'm so thankfoul that there's a person like you in the internet to associate with my future desires of how to live my life! Seriously. Some things that I want to say to you even if you can't read it ('cause your channel is really big): 1. I hope your neck and you can be ok after the treatment! Giving positiving thoughts! 2. I know your channel since a little time ago, so I don't know what do you study? Because you think like my old nutricionist (she moved to another city, but she was the best!), she is used to talk A LOT about mindinful eating, and just like the way you said in the video! 3. I'm studying the English language for some years ago, but my listening is not that good, I feel dificulty when I watch you talking, but I think that's wonderful 'cause I can learn how to hear people better, you help me to improve my skills, thank you! Edit: I found a book about mindful eating in my school library, can't wait to read it!
Hi Caitlin, I have had neck and back issues for many years now, and decided to try Craniosacral therapy. It is helping, on a deeper level than the years I went to the chiropractor.. Take care : )
ohhh noo .. sorry to hear about your cervical degeneration!! I have the same (or a similar, don't exactly know because they use different terms in german) issue ever since I was ... like 12? Spent a few years on and off at chirupracticers and in treatment classes for several different back/shoulder blade/hip areas.... feel ya!! It will get better!! ♥♥
Hi Caitlin! I recently heard that a lot of probiotics are destroyed during the digestion process. have you heard this? Do you think you get a lot of the benefits of the probiotics you mention in this video? I've been searching for a good probiotic for a while. Thanks!
I have trouble on eating intuitively because I have to take my food to work. So sometimes I open my lunchbox and it's like 'maybe I wanted this yesterday night when I cooked it after gym... but now it's hot and sunny and I want a salad'. Yes, but that's what I have. I don't know if someone have the same opinion or trouble, or maybe there's people who knows how to overcome it. Thank you!!
My doctor told me not to take probiotic supplements every day because it could actually 'reverse' the effects and make your digestion worse and / or your body could get use to it and thus it loses it's effectiveness. I don't know if the probiotic I was using was vegan or not so I didn't ask about it but I'd figure I'd still comment even if it may or not be the same case for official vegan probiotics.
I have been taking probiotics, and mine say don’t take with a hot drink, and I just wanted to check that yours don’t say this too... because you took it with tea ☕️
The whole "eating to feel good" thing is sooo interesting, complex and yet simple! I'm super sensitive to a lot of foods due to health reasons and I usually don't crave them anymore. But whenever I accidentely eat them, I tend to crave a looooot of food and mostly "unhealthy crap" (so processed stuff with a lot of added sugar and oil and additives lol) during that day and sometimes even for a couple of days. As if my body wants to push it out by adding more random things... and then I feel even more crappy. So if I want to honor my body and feel good, I can't allow myself to indulge in those kind of things when I know I've eaten something I can't digest (properly or sometimes even at all because it makes 'let's go see the doctor' like stomach cramps and bloating and indigestion and stuff ... tmi sorry)... sooo anyways, the point is: that's not intuitive eating and listening to your body in the typical way, that's honoring your body by not allowing it to eat stuff that would make things worse and instead trying to heal before indulging again. Which is fine too. :D
I want what I eat over an extended period of time. If that's junk I'll crave junk. If it's healthy I start craving the healthy. If I start eating the junk again then that's what I crave. No moderation ability. around certain foods like french fries. I can eat just a bite or two of chocolate and be happy. So I think this whole topic is complicated. There are times in my life if I ate what I wanted they would have been having to cut me out of a house. Now thank goodness I've eaten enough whole healthy foods that I genuinely crave things like salad, brown rice, beans, etc.
Caitlin, I've been an admirer of your videos for a while now but I must say that listening to what your body is craving must come with high awareness. If our microbiome is imbalanced, the bad bacteria in our bodies send signals to our brain that we NEED sugar (of any kind). Giving into this long term can have pretty bad outcome. However, you did of course mention that we are all learning and you're not stating anything as fact, so just some advice!
Anyone interested in Intuitive Eating should definitely read the book and follow Evelyne Tribole (creater of IE) on Instagram! I love that you are talking about it, Caitlin! Though there are definitely a lot more nuances that anyone interested should look into! Mindful eating isn't always required for example! Sometimes eating quickly and without paying attention has a purpose. The goal of IE is to ditch all food rules so that we don't get worried about the "right" way to eat. :)
Clarification: yes, we all can eat intuitively and mindfully and listen to our bodies, but Intuitive Eating as a paradigm refers to a very specific set of ideas in nutrition science based on 10 principles, and was created in response to how pervasive diet culture has become. Here is the website! www.intuitiveeating.org/10-principles-of-intuitive-eating/
Any tips for IBS like symptoms? I have had a really negative relationship with food lately and it's been difficult finding things that I can eat that won't upset my stomach.
Yeah, it’s funny how I totally see myself as a foodie, yet I almost always eat mindlessly while watching TV! Like, if I really like food that much shouldn’t I focus on eating it and not do it on autopilot. lol
There is no point in taking probiotics if you’re getting enough fiber ~ unless you have taken antibiotics recently! Nothing on you, it’s just not necessary :)
Intuitive eating doesn't sound good because if I just ate what I craved I would 100% be fat and unhealthy... you should eat what you craves sometimes, sure, but not all the time because most people will crave sugary stuff when they're hungry. What you should do is think about healthy meals while you're hungry and make your mind crave that. If I'm craving cake and icing sugar and cookies, I start daydreaming about a bowl of rice with all my favourite toppings instead, like avocado, chickpeas, sriracha... and then I start to crave that instead. Which is obviously healthier.
Some people naturally crave healthy foods most of the time. For example, I genuinely don't feel like eating pancakes, biscuits, ice-cream, pizza, ramen, chips etc. every day. I genuinely crave healthy meals 80%+ of the time. Everyone's different so just because you feel that that intuitive eating may not be healthy for you, doesn't mean it isn't healthy for others.
i wonder not a doctor either but i do have a couple of masters degrees and i am going to be in law school so yea. i wonder if you are suffering from a "rare" degenerative bone disease causing you neck pain in your early 20s is.....because your parents never fed you meat or vitamin b or vitamin d from a animal source? could be, who's to say!
You're talking sooo, so much.... I don't know how you think but when I watch what I eat in a day videos I aktually really just want to see what you're eating! I always skip the talking parts.......

I don't think anyone can take the credit for creating the concept of intuitive eating. Intuitive eating means just that; to eat intuitively.
How much for the probiotics on Thrive market?
Any tips for IBS like symptoms? I have had a really negative relationship with food lately and it's been difficult finding things that I can eat that won't upset my stomach.

As a vegan, do you find that you have to take an iron supplement to avoid anemia?
You look so high while you eat the chips 😂

Yeah, it’s funny how I totally see myself as a foodie, yet I almost always eat mindlessly while watching TV! Like, if I really like food that much shouldn’t I focus on eating it and not do it on autopilot. lol
Dude I have the same Mexican style blanket!!!! Woah lol
Shauna MacLean me too! Same color and 2 others of different colors. love ‘em! I’m using it now😃

There is no point in taking probiotics if you’re getting enough fiber ~ unless you have taken antibiotics recently! Nothing on you, it’s just not necessary :)
Anyone else getting tired of paid promotions in almost every video?
Btw: Look into Quantum Touch Energy Healing here on RUclips. Also look into Qigong Healing and Acupuncture!!
You live with sweet simple vegan? But it's a different kitchen
She has her own house now
I don’t think intuitive eating works for me. I think when you have ED its better to eat in a schedule and don’t wait for hunger. Hunger is a trigger.
I like your door
