Im a 68 year old Aussie living in the USoNA, just started this process for my neighbours daughter who needs a kidney.Frustrating at times, i just want to help and get on with this, but they have so much pre screening to go through, gunna have to go give blood just to get my blood group, bloody medicare won't pay for it, says its elective! But for me, this is just the right thing to do, simple! I actually will be disappointed if not a suitable donor, even OK with the donor swapping, to me, if you can help then why the bloody hell wouldn't you? Pretty simple decision for me, my neighbours and i have had some very oprn and honest discussions, so no pressure, just scared of telling my whacko sister!!!😅

this talk as so many strongly downplays the risks. The donors remaining kidney is being pressurized by the entire blood flow which once passed 2 kidneys. Therefore it gets bloated, podocytes wear and the slit membranes open wider and let more urine but also proteine pass. That is the "increase" in function, which is more of an exaggerated work mode which results in accelerated wear. Once the donor falls sick with almost any kind of desease e.g. Cancer, Alzheimers or Parkinson's, the medical treatment often is toxic to the kidneys. Now the donor has less renal mass to loose and the toxic agent flows through one kidney only, i.e. at twice the concentration, which will quickly raise the question if the desease or the treatment is more detrimental to the patient. Living donations have the advantage, that doctors can plan and prepare for the transplantation and that enables the transplantation of non compatible organs as there is time to suppress the recipients immune system with B-cell depleting medicine (Rituximab) and remove antibodies by plasmapheresis. While this may succeed, there is significant risk early in the procedure, where the recipient may loose the organ or even their life.

How many of the surgeons, doctors, social workers and nurses on the donation team have donated a kidney? It would be interesting to know if they are willing to donate.

Hi Susie - we know of several UHN team members, including the director of the UHN Living Kidney Donor program, Dr. Bob Richardson, who became an anonymous kidney donor after retirement. You can view his story here: ruclips.net/video/2xTNhINhJIc/видео.html

I'm not in the medical field and will become an "altruistic donor".... I'm in the process of all the testing. It's the gift of life.... my heart feels full when I think of it. I only need one kidney. If something happens and I need a kidney in the future,, I will move to the top of the transplant list....but that is rare. In the interim, I can save a life. I could keep two kidneys...incase I need a spare....but the probability is very low. Even so.....I will have a great medical team to assist me as a former donor.
