Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight 1998 Live Performance
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 окт 2019
- This was from the Tribute concert organized by Bill Danoff to pay tribute to the late singer/songwriter John Denver.
Starland Vocal Band had close ties with Denver and backed him up on his 1976 summer tour
One of my favorite things about this song is how most people don't get the lyrics right in the line
"rubbin' sticks and stones together make the sparks ignite and the thought of rubbin' you is gettin' so excitin'", either people actually mis hear the lyric or are afraid to sing it, most will sing it as "the thought of lovin' you", that's not the correct lyric.
#AfternoonDelight #StarlandVocalBand #skyrocket
Bill and Taffy co-wrote the 2nd verse of Take Me Home,Country Roads with John Denver
after having already written it with a different 2nd verse

This song so fits my memories of 1976. So joyful. I was a kid, and the world was a beautiful place. It brings tears to my eyes it was so awesome.
So many of us wish the world was the way it was in 1976,so much pride and respect during our bicentennial year. Thanks for watching our channel.
Amazing how much Taffy and Margot sound so great in their harmonies after all these years. I was only in my young youthful days when this tune came out. But, I still was aware of its sexiness😁🥰. Something about the great harmonies that always carried me away on each listen.
Never forgot it when I romanticized my future gf’s. Still had that magic🎼🎵🎶🤘🏾❤️
I was in third grade when this song came out.....I loved it....I thought it was about fireworks!! lol
😊
😊
Afternoon delight was on the menu 😊
There several dishes on the "Afternoon Delights " menu, none were called Afternoon Delight
Me too. LOL
Don't tell the band but 100 years ago in the late 1970's and 80's I worked at Capitol Records and we used this song to warm up our vocals. It's a kind of vocal gymnastics and we loved it.
Well, you just told them, but that's ok,appreciate the comment .Thanks for sharing that.
@@starlandandmore My Pleasure folks. It's an amazing, enduring song.
I was about 7 when this song came out. I used to wish I could hurry and grow up. What I didn't realize is just how much I'd miss those days. A lot of relatives who were living at that time that are long since gone. Friends who I've long lost touch with. Music has that certain magic that takes us back to those days.
So true! I can hear a 40 year old song it takes right back.
Thats how i feel !
I am about your age...We used to hear this one in the car when we were visiting my dad's aunt and uncle. They have been gone a while, but the memories, it reminds me of them, of couse I did not understand the words.LOL
TRUE AND IT SURE DOES >>>
I was also 7 yrs old when this song came out in 1976.
My uncle John, who WAS & STILL IS MY FAVORITE UNCLE is 10 yrs older than me, so I was his constant shadow & I got to listen to & still remember all those GREAT songs from the 70s when I was hanging around with him & all his friends.
Such GREAT GREAT memories.
I say this all the time, I believe from 1976 to 1983 was the greatest yrs of music.
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
1976 was a magical year here in the states. I was 14 years old and about to enter HS. What a wonderful time to be a kid.
76 was, in my opinion, the best year for most groups
True! I was 17 in 1976 and wouldn't want to be a kid today for anything! Great memories here.
@@rplace8737 Senior in high school. The economy, politics, all that stuff didn't matter. I remember the music and that summer at the beach, my restaurant job, the Bicentennial...I loved the 70s.
Great time to be a kid in America
It was.
I was 16 when this song came out and w us teens didn’t know what this song was about at first and we just thought it was a pretty tune but then we were told what it was about and then we were like “oooooo”!!!
Didnt know what it was about ??I knew what afternoon delight was at 12 years old.
Bet Fast gun had had tried out his quick draw on the girls before 16. Roz, I was 14, and never put two & two together at that time, but I also had no older siblings to let me in on those things.
Amazing vocal talent, grew up with this on the radio but it wasn't until much later that I realized the great vocal talent required for the harmonies.
Thank you for the kind comment, we worked hard on the arrangements and were blessed with Jon Carroll and his amazing talents
@@starlandandmore What a time to be alive. It was easy to take so many performers for granted, they made it look so easy and fun. John Denver, Buddy Rich, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, etc., etc. I never realized John Denver had such amazing pipes until I tried to perform some of his stuff. His songwriting too is touching.
I found it interesting that Suzanne Ciani was the one who created that 'whoosh' sound on the track. I found out about her only this past year. Interesting also the stories my sister and her friends told about the sexy lyrics, like they weren't really sure if it was risque. Oh yes...
This is my all time favourite record ,even though Im 55 ,it holds a certain magic .Their talent and harmony is incredible and man,the girl with dark hair has an amasing voice
I was driving from Illinois to Florida at the top of this song's fame. I swear it was on the radio every ten minutes.
We kinda felt the same way....after awhile
Just so good having lived through music like this. 1 of those songs thtat forms part of your dna
I know what you mean, thanks for watching and listening
I was in grade school/ holding hands at the skating rink!
I remember falling in love with the women of the band, as a kid, even before i saw how beautiful they were. I grew up in a very bad household, with lot's of violence and yelling. This song used to soothe me at night, listening to it on my little A.M radio. :)
Bless you, thank you for watching and sharing your memories
It’s a “delight” to listen to Starland Vocal Band.😎
Thanks, we appreciate that
Love it!
I was feeling stressed this evening, and I came across this gem from my youth and I feel much better now. Thank you for the beautiful, bittersweet and melodic trip back to simpler times.
You're welcome and thank you kindly
This is a song that I can close my eyes and travel back to 1976. This was on AM radio and my cousin wanted it badly, so my Mom bought her the 45 at Danner's in Noblesville, Indiana. It's just a feel good song and it's beautiful, elegant, and timeless.

If you're on Facebook, here's the link to a rare event, Taffy Nivert will be LIVE in an exclusive interview and will discuss her musical history with John Denver on November 7th
One of my top five most favorite songs of all time
Thanks for watching, we appreciate it, this performance was during the memorial concert we did for John Denver.
I sure miss these songs of the 70s. A legendary decade for music.
Amen to that, thanks for watching our channel, we've met some long ago fans and some recent fans since starting this 10 years ago.
John Denver is sorely missed.
Yes
This song kinda transports you to a simpler time and place. It's sexy, sweet, and joyful at the same time.
It was just pure fun
Love it , takes me back to being a carefree kid, it's a goosebumps song.
Sweet music!
This was LIVE live.....no post production (I don't think). Gotta give them props for doing such a great job.
Everyone was topnotch
Always gives me goose bumps when I hear this, takes me back to the summer of 1976.
This was always one of a few favorite songs of 1976. The other two were 1-If You Leave Me Now-by Chicago and 2-You are the Woman-by Firefall. They were the top songs played on our cafeteria jukebox. Greetings from Canada. 🇨🇦
I still have the original 45 of Afternoon Delight. Loved this song as a kid and love it today!
Few bands sound this good LIVE, many years later. Love this!
Awww thank you kindly, we appreciate this comment
I used to have an audio cassette tape of about 25 1976 hits that I recorded off the radio. They are all great songs, but my favorite is and always has been Afternoon Delight. There is no other song like it. It is so unique, beautiful and uplifting. In this 1998 performance, the band does an amazing job replicating the original studio version. The blend of voices is wonderful!

I wish I could turn back time...but after hearing and seeing my favorite musicians playing here, time hasn't changed..nor your incredible talent of songs, singing and spirit. A beautiful Afternoon, another Delight!
Thank you kindly
Wow, just wow!! They still sounded just like they were in the 70s. And ma'am Margot is still very gorgeous! Mabuhay & much love from the Philippines!
I was a senior in high school and so in love, this was our favorite song.
Definitely not teenagers anymore but they still sound great!
Thanks for commenting and watching
Wow. First of all, this band was always highly underrated. The incredible vocals and perfect tight harmonies are incredible. I was 10 or 11 when this came out. I literally thought it was about having a special ice cream treat with someone you loved. A few years later I realized it was about having a nooner lol.
I recently watched over and over again the 1976 performance in the studio. Your voices and harmonies are jaw dropping. I LOVE IT!
I also had a big crush on Jon. Still do❤
I'll pass your crush along to Jon,he has some great solo work on cds out there.
Oh thank you! I honestly cannot stop listening to you. You are the gold standard of 4 part harmony. I was a fan at 11, and still a fan at 58.
@@margylenhard8535 thank you kindly.
If you want to catch Jon in his younger period, our 6 episode tv series is here on the channel.
@@starlandandmore I never knew you had a tv series! I will definitely be checking that out.
I saw you the four of you in concert in Philadelphia at the Spectrum. My dad sang in a barbershop quartet while he was in med school. He LOVED your voices and music. He took me to see you. I was a singer so naturally I was thrilled. I tried to get all of your autographs but we couldn’t up to the stage in time..
Anyway, thanks again for this iconic song and the memories of good vocals and good music.
One Of My All Time Favorite Tracks .
I remember this song very well. This was everyones favorite in 1976
We appreciate it,then and now,it was fun
Really Really Good Memories
I remember this well, always takes me back to that time in my life, I was 13...good times....best times actually..great music..and this was one of the biggest hits
It’s great to see they weren’t a studio band. They could actually sing/perform for real
It was always about the voices and harmonies
Brings back memories of the good old days. 🎶😊
Memories for sure
Still hear this on AM 740 zoomed radio here in Canada love still ! 🦋🎼✌🏻
Thanks, we wrote a song for Doug and the Slugs in the 80's called Who Knows How To Make Love Stay, great band,Doug passed too soon..thanks for watching
Even now this song still lingers up there with the greats.
Thank you kindly
@@starlandandmore It must bring a smile to your face knowing how ubiquitous your song has become over the decades and just how much of a part of American culture it has grown to be. Just yesterday I walked in our local supermarket and there it was playing. By the way, who came up with the steel pedal guitar break/solo?
@@Lushfan a gentleman we considered to be the fifth member of Starland, Danny Pendleton, an amazing musician ,his pedal steel is heard somewhere on all of albums, thanks for commenting
How can I ever forget this song !! It was year of 200 Anniversary , In Los Angeles this song start my journey in USA, today they were planing on world cup Houston and Washington .
We heard it!
Margot Chapman is one special lady.
Love love love her voice.
I'll make sure Margot reads your comment, thank you
This really is a timeless track. Everyone loves it and it keeps coming into every new generation, living on and on. I LOVED when it was in the Will Ferrell movie Anchorman, great scene. Someone may come around and try to redo this later but the original is a priceless gem, truly.
We appreciate the sentiment, thank you

Beyond welcome!
This was when music was music!!!!!!!!
what the heck happened!!!
@jimduncan8055 no talent using autotune, that's what happened
I never tire of this song, and it never fails to bring a smile. I was blessed to see John live in the mid 70s twice, but alas Bill and Taffy were not performing with him at those shows. That would have been an extra treat. I remember going into the record store and seeing one of the Fat City albums about that time. As a teenager, I didn't quite have any money to buy it. Instant crush on Taffy though. (Sorry, Bill!) Still, I was well aware of your talents and was very glad to see the success achieved with the Starland Vocal Band, including watching the CBS show and wishing it had been picked up past that summer. Whether as a duo, working with John, or with Margot and Jon, you became a part of American culture with your writing and performances. We all are blessed for that. Thank you.
Thank you so much, for what it's worth, all six episodes of our TV show are here on our channel (we were actually happy that the show wasn't picked up beyond 6 episodes)
thank you Starland Vocal Band for that fine rendition of `Afternoon Delight' 👍
You're welcome
Duh...its the original
Who doesn't love a little afternoon delight! Great song
Thank you
One of my uncles lived in Rockville, Md. for a while and when I was a kid, used to take me this to this place in Georgetown for lunch once in a while. I don't recall the name of the place, but I thought I remembered seeing Afternoon Delight on the menu. Every time I heard this song, it reminded me of that. But it was a long time ago and I could have mis-remembered everything. It's still a great tune by great musicians. Almost as good as the Anchorman version (kidding) :)
Title taken from a menu at Clyde's restaurant called Afternoon Delights
The cellar door, under K st Freeway
I liked it as a kid, I like it more now, and I never saw that anchorman movie.
Happy Birthday Bill Danoff, thank you for the music 🎉❤
Sounds as fresh as ever this afternoon in October 2019! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐➕👍

it was a great Summer the Bicentennial was so exciting we anticipated it and celebrated it
And thus sing was always there just amazing
And at that age I knew exactly what it was about
thank you Starland Vocal Band
Love this song. I remember hearing it when I was little bitty 7 or 8 .didn't understand it the words. I just LOVE there voices. How smooth it was not rushing not a struggle just easy. And when I grew up believe it or not I really didn't "pay" attention to the words. Until one day I was like ok better not be sending this song out. Lol. But I wanted people just to hear the smooth harmony. This is 2020 and still love the harmony.
Thank you kindly
I was 10 when this came out! What a flashback!
Thanks for watching and listening and commenting
Thanks beautiful!!!
Thank you, you're welcome
Pretty cool to see them get together for this concert despite the two couples being divorced...It's hard enough to get one divorced couple together for a concert, but two in one band is quite commendable!! thank you band members!!
You're welcome

The mixing was not that great either.

They may have been a one hit wonder, but it was a fucking good one!
I had the pleasure of going to John Denver concerts from earlyish in his career until that (way too soon) last tour. The only time I ever saw an opening act was the Starland Vocal Band. And they were worthy of that honor..a great group! I would love to see this whole show!!!!

The female singer in the black shirt used to be absolutely beautiful back in the day when this song came out.
We think she's still beautiful
What do you mean by 'used to' ?
@@RonP51 Have you seen the pictures and videos of her from the 1970's? She was truly stunning and absolutely gorgeous.
The camera did not focused on that lady in black when her time to sing as in the 1976 video.
I've always thought that too, but I think Margot didn't want to be to focused on, she'd been in a car accident previously and maybe still not comfortable with the camera, she'd been in a coma
Simply the best!!!
🎶 thanks
They should have thanked the Good Will Hunting Guys for bringing the song back.
Considering we performed this at the Cellar Door memorial for John Denver, it wouldn't have made sense...on the other hand ,Bill has always reached out to anyone who has used AD in a movie and tv show he's very humbled by it.
