- The piano world’s new star proves his musical creativity in a genius response to a mobile phone, during an intimate Gershwin solo.
Hayato Sumino, who also goes by the name Cateen, was playing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and conductor Ben Palmer, when the moment of interruption and inspiration occurred.
“It’s in a musician’s nature to instinctively react to the sounds that they hear around them - even when making their Classic FM Live/Royal Albert Hall debut,” Hayato said afterwards.

So amazing of the pianist to improvise so quickly - but also, imagine having your phone on ring at a performance like this... Like dude. Dude!!! Silence your phone!!!
I hide under my seat !
I suspect an elderly person. Surely not intending to be rude, and probably mortified.
There's always one quick to judge.
And not once, but twice ...
@@greatbriton8425it’s not judgement it’s common sense. If the owner of the phone was an elderly person I’m sure the person next to them would be like, “I can help you silence your phone if you want”. I think this was one person who thought their cellphone would just quiet down eventually. They didn’t want to bother.
This feels especially appropriate during Rhapsody in Blue, since Gershwin wrote it while drawing inspiration from the sounds of the city - the rattling of a train car, etc.
If he had gotten a tellagram he would has incorporated that into this song to😂😂
Ooo cool! Pretty!
Instead of frustration and anger, he chose to make it beautiful. What a response to an obstacle.
A lesson in life 😅
When life gives you lemons...😊
😭 ❤
Came for the duet, stayed for the Music.

Ikr 😊
Didn't even noticed the ringing phone if not for the indication.😁

Amazed!
Love the little look the violinist gives him when he responds tom the phone. Love it!
And then the cute hair tossle! :)
Yup. She probably took him home. He looked right at her as he did it. Nice little moment.
The ultimate “pickup line” ;P
I bet she gives great helmet
@@SuPeRNinJaRedhe said “somebody’s gotta pick SOMETHING up around here!”
That was so natural I didn’t even realize when the improv kicked in!
I've watched this 5 times now and still haven't noticed the phone!
Neither have I. Thanks for leaving the comment so I feel less like a complete dunce 😂
@@ahwhite1398there's a visual queue and then he mimics the ring tone. 😅
it's at the start and later 0:46
@@ancientwisdom108yeah, i finally notice the visual cue at about 11 seconds. I'm still not hearing the other one. I think a lot of it was not expecting a simple bell ringtone but something more ring-toney.
This performance is RIDICULOUSLY impressive. I’m floored.
He has many more gems over at his RUclips channel (Cateen). Highly recommended! He’s great
Ikr, Im roofed
100%. The phone thing was maybe the least interesting part of this amazing performance.
@@shonen84where can I watch the whole version of this piece and him playing it lol
Happened twice! 0:10 & 0:45 The second time, Cateen again naturally incorporated into the music ! I loved the violinists were smiling charmingly !
Charmingly or awkwardly because "did this really just happen?" 😂
@@laaaliiiluuu I think they managed very well👏👏
Not the 1st Time ?
Sounds like so.
@@viedeciel I heard that Cateen picks up sounds from the audience when he plays encore during his solo tour! As he allows the audience to film or take photos during encore, there are accidental noises from their phone or cameras when shooting like shutter sound etc!
Thx because is so seamlessly incorporated it into the performance that I couldn’t tell
I'm not a classical music person and have no idea about this world in terms of what's original and what's improved in this video, but I'm floored by how beautiful the music was and how skilled this pianist is. I'm glad this was my first exposure to this realm of music!
It's blues music though, gershwin :-) not classic ^^
Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin.
@inMuro definitely classical music, with jazz elements. Or jazz with classical elements. But I don't see much blues here. It's a defining piece from the Jazz Age, and arguably the most famous of Gershwins compositions.
@craze961 I hope this introduction to classical and jazz will put you on an interesting journey of discovery ❤
Such a pleasant piece ❤ also a first for me hearing Gershwin
As a classically trained pianist of 45 years...this was a GREAT response!
wahhh you should make videos
@@nishhx_xevery experienced pianist or whatever should make videos and upload? You know there are plenty of them? This generation 😢
@@freedomfreedomhoiwhat one person does should be blamed on this generation? You know there are plenty of people in a generation? Hypocrites 😢
Also they didnt even say anything bad 😂
@@DaPengui1n I'm confused >>>>>
Musically, a genius. Classy and smart when dealing with an unpleasant situation.
Respect to the artist. He is giving a show to everyone who came. On the other side the dude with the phone, you had two jobs, sit and and turn off your phone. If you are a doctor, put it at least on vibration. How hard can it be, you also managed to dress yourself, drive to the concert and find your seat.
I used to record choral performances and it seems like inevitably someone would be sitting within three feet of one of the mics coughing up a lung or two. You can almost count on this kind of stuff.
I saw one world class classical pianist on a YT video that started a concert, and the sustain pedal was stuck on. How in the heck does THAT happen???? She was funny. She explained the problem, asked for a new piano, and then said, hmmm, what can we do with this while we wait. A joy to watch
The piano was moved to the stage lift, with her still playing while it was moved as she was lowered down, out of sight. Sh then came back up on the lift playing the replacement piano. I can't remember who the artist was, but IIRC she had an accent, a pretty one. I'm pretty sure you could find it on YT with a search, as that is where I saw it.
I wonder how many times that story has been told over the years by those in attendance. And I wondered if she got as much of a kick out of it as the audience did, or if it was a 40 gauge, bring me my brown pants moment. Either way, she INCREASED the audience entertainment, making some delicious lemonade out of a really nasty lemon. Sorry for the metaphor fest. :-)
He demonstrated how professionals strive to make their artifact better (if not perfect ) even when the surrounding situation is not ideal.
I was listening to a string quartet perform in a studio class, and right as they ended on a big C major chord a random phone in the room pinged perfectly in tune and everybody laughed
This a wonderful performance by the way!
Sumino’s improvisation is great, it fits into the music very naturally! The subtle Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 reference at 1:49 is hilarious 😂
Wow can’t believe you noticed that 😂
@@noobie5614 Actually, in his older version of Rhapsody in Blue, he integrated HR2 in a much more obvious way. To me, this new one is a huge improvement.
@@benharmonics it is precisely a prodigious ingenuity to incorporate such strenious pieces in a singular extravaganza!
Absolutely! Bravo Cateen! ❤
It’s always breathtaking to me how amazing humans can be.
Yeah, now let me REALLY blow your mind. This guy has a masters in engineering, mechanical, I think, and did some leading edge work in AI. He also writes his own works, and does some amazing silly things like his Flight of the Bumblebee incrementing to 250 bpm, on a TOY piano. Always playful and fun. I sent his original work to a friend of mine who is a PhD in mathematics and did leading edge work in both pushing the envelope in a specific branch, and a lot of work for Wall Street developing derivative mathematics. He now profs at a high end university. His response, when I told him all about Hyato, was, "Humbling".
I thought it was once, but it was twice. Bravo, Cateen.
Ohtani - pitcher and hitter
Cateen - classical and jazz
Ohtani has NOTHING on Cateen. Shear magnificence from one of the most sophisticated pianists of our time!
@@dukeofrodtown1705Ohtani is the single most groundbreaking player in terms of versatility and in changing the nature of players in human history in the sport of baseball 😭 Agree that Sumino is one of the most sophisticated pianists of our time tho !
@@thomasbainbridge2992 As true as that is... I'm just salty that he shunned Toronto in the MLB offseason LOL (Jays were useless against him last night). Sumino scores a homer every time he plays Rhapsody
Well, classical and jazz are not black and white. They are closely intertwined and similar. The piece Sumino was playing is, in fact, classical music.
@@dukeofrodtown1705 couldn’t help but laugh at ohtanis homer ! Only thing landing in Toronto was a score deficit, not the plane with ohtani in it lol. Safer to be a Sumino fan ig and better luck this eve! 😂
This is the moment that revealed extraordinary musical talent of Hayato Sumino Cateen. He is music itself transcending various genre of music.
My face as it got even more and more impressive: 😯 😦 😧 😲
This man is a genius.
電話の音まで美しく聴こえた。まるで恋人からの電話のように物語を連想させるようなアレンジで素敵でした!
Hayato has always been on another level, gonna miss him making Amazing Game OST covers
Classical pianist who can improv! Genius!
Yeah, I know he plays jazz too. Genius!
Yeah, that's the way it is supposed to be. Unfortunately, classical tradition supressed improvisation from performance. Didn't know about this guy, I'm glad he is keeping this practice alive!
@@luizcaduthankfully, it seems classical improvisation (partimento/jazz) is slowly but surely making a comeback
Came for a funny video, moved to tears by his playing.
i know nothing about classical music and came for comic relief lured by the title, but ended up watching the video 3 times just because i was lost for words how amazing the whole thing was
ピアノが上手いのは勿論だけど、どんな状況でも観客を楽しませるのがプロの違いですよね。本当一流だと思う。
What a composed & creative thinking person!
着信音も自分の音楽に取り込んでしまう。さすが角野さん👏
What a wonderful improvisation👍👍👍
Cateen makes even two ringtones into music👏👏👏👏👏
That was transcendent playing, I love RiB, that piano solo section gives so much scope to the musician and this guy is phenomenal
1:18 most fire groove I've heard in a while
0:47 He’s having a miraculous session again with the telephone call on same pitch!!!
At least the phone went with the chaos of the big city setting in Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. 😅
これをfullで聴きたいです
Bravo Cateen ❤❤❤
I wish Classic FM can upload the whole performance 🙏
Go to his channel, CATEEN, and you can see a couple of performances of this piece, one in its entirety, with a Japanese orchestra, and one with on of the major philharmonic orchestras, or maybe the Boston Pops, don't remember. He also has original compositions, like his Piano Sonata 0, which is awesome. Also lots of silly playful stuff, always as an absurd level of mastery.
Absolutely beautiful playing from one of my favorite pianists of all time.
This is Hayato Sumino❣️
This is Cateen❣️
I ♥ the world that he charms us✨✨✨

Brilliant! What a genius!
When the music is alive like that, I forget to breathe while listening 🤩
This reminds me of the violinist whose concert was interrupted by the Nokia ring tone. Love both performances!

Gershwin himself would definitely love Sumito for being able to capture the sounds of those Jazzy times in New York
Stunning sound.
Also a great way of helping the audience stay immersed in the performance in spite of the interruption :)
Who goes to a concert with their phone on? Signs everywhere. One of my favorite pieces. ❤
