People forget that Jerry West had zero weaknesses to his game. Amazing scorer, great passer, and was a tough individual defender. This season highlighted that just as the video mentioned. I'm glad that someone is finally talking about this super underrated season! RIP to the legend!!
@@lexkanyima2195 You named 2 top 5 players that's not fair. West don't have the accolades that's the only mark on his resume. He had no weakness he also has more defensive teams in his 30s than LeBron James do in his 30s. Jerry West also top 5 in Finals ppg and regular season ppg he still has the most points in finals history. He scored 25,000+ points without a 3 pointer. Stephen Curry still hasn't passed him in scoring and he's above Curry in PPG APG RPG. Jerry West is truly a top 10 All-time player no doubt about it.
Wilt 18 PPG in the finals tragic tragic tragic. He's the reason they came up short. Bill Russell retires an you would expect Wilt to lead LA to 4 championships.
Great story on Jerry West, Mr Basketball. As to how the Lakers lost, I was a Jr. in HS + a huge Knick fan, in game 5 when Willis went down the Knicks put 6'7' Dave Stallworth on Wilt and LA didn't feed him the ball Knicks shot great but I was shocked and thrilled the Knicks STOLE the game. I thought series was over when Reed went down, losing Game 5 + no Willis Game 6, it was over. Game 7 Willis walks/limps out makes first two shots and LA mailed it in. Frazier, Barnett, Bradley, DeBussher + all played inspired BB + won the Title. My fave basketball team '69 Knicks.
What about Walt Frazier's 36 point, 19 assists, 7 rebounds against West and without Reed after the first two jumpers? Talk about forgotten or overlooked!! RIP to Jerry West and Willis Reed. We all know MVP has not always gone to THE BEST player. Which Jerry clearly was. Bill Russell won the same season Wilt averaged 50 & 27 and Oscar averaged a triple double. Things happen. No need to mention Steve Nash winning TWO he probably should not have....
What about Wilt Chamberlain scoring 45 points in a finals game when the Knicks were without Willis Reed then when Reed comes back he goes back to under 25 PPG? Also Bill Russell winning that MVP shows how much guys actually valued winning back then.
They have an MVP for the Finals, so the regular season MVP should have gone to him, as Charles Barkley in 1993 and Karl Malone in 1997... although Michael Jordan should have won botn of those regular season MVP's...another robbery!
Willis Reed for sure didn't deserve that MVP award. Jerry West was unquestionably the better player and was much more valuable to the Lakers. The Knicks had an extremely deep team, and they weren't as dependent on him to succeed as the Lakers were with Jerry

But was he better then Kareem and Magic at that time.

West also hit a three quarter court shot that sent a game into OT, that had it happened today we would not be talking about any of this.

This man is the most underrated player ever. There is no one more underrated than him. He is a top 12 player, no questions asked.
