you should also add that Hong Kong protesters used this mesh network to communicate with each other when the Chinese government restricted their internet usage.
One useful application would be communicating with your game cams/security cams across a larger property, where you wouldn't want to bury miles of wires but the same time want to be independent from the internet.
I work on youth camps in the middle of the outback (Australia) and this would be an awesome idea to set up a communications network just for the camp so all the staff can keep in touch locally.
This is very interesting. A while back I was thinking of making a small mesh network with a couple of RPi's to connect some of my friends together. It would be really cool if we could connect our whole town through these types of networks.
That spinning sound is slightly annoying when used so repetitively as this. Could you use another one or space it out a bit? The old "blob" sound was alot less anoying
One interesting thing that was glanced over a bit: Internet doesn't mean wireless! While it's impractical on any large scale to wire a connection to many people, this video seems to mainly be discussing local scale internet anyway. You can eliminate many of the roadblocks which these systems encounter (and albeit introduce a few new ones), while also making your connection faster and more stable just by using wires instead of wireless. I fact, if you have numerous cell phone devices, you can connect them all to a computer and enable data sharing via usb. This super simple 'plug and play' option can essentially turn the desktop (or other non-mobile os system) into a server. You can load data from one phone to the computer, and then the computer to the phone. This is the same concept as the internet, and can be done without installing any extra software (at least for windows users, Idk about mac/linux).
My original idea back in college was to hoard routers, pass them among my neighbors in emergency events, get apache or ftp installed on whatever computers needed it, then get the routers connected to eachother. Thing is, I'm not sure how I would work out inter-router things. And even if I could.... everyone in my neighborhood is older than dinosaur poop :/
DarkBallYE - Zero G Random Can I find you during an apocalypse situation. Resourceful thinking is a lost art in this day and age. You wouldn't happen to live near Florida, United States would you?
Florida is the last place you wanna be in an apocalypse... Florida would be the worst place because it has a shit load of Arms running(more dangerous people are likely to exploit your resourcefulness). The main demographic would be OLD people, so no help or collaboration anytime soon. The weather is humid in summer(overheating). Your best bet would be Colorado or Utah.
Great tutorial! In Hungary, at us, government wanted to implement tax on the internet. If that had happened I would have wanted to create a kind of new internet with my friends or something. Or before I got my first smartphone, I looked for tutorials how can I share internet connection via Bluetooth. I ended up writing two J2ME apps to send source code to my previous phone. It was very slow took minutes to transfer a few words. These are my experiences with creating my own network

The internet is just a Network of interconnected networks and sub-nets where protocol for packet forwarding makes this system addressable. All you can do is build onto the network, the internet isn't a thing you make its the result of what was made from a world wide perspective.
Thing is, If the internet as you say did spontaneously disappear, we wouldn't have your video as a resource for building a new internet. So, Unless people acted on this now, Its pretty useless. As a hypothetical question though, Its a great response =)
Good point and the answer is people can download and for the foreseeable future store this very video and many others which is what we should be doing while we can right now so it can be re uploaded to another network or shared locally at any point when this internet we know is gone.
Can't we just use Wifi Router, Ad-hoc, Bluetooth for communicating in small area instead of having a software for it and then connect it to other internet alternative if needed.
Depends on the use case. if you you're intending to simply communicate with another device near you, then ad-hoc, routers, and bluetooth work just fine...but if you're wanting to set up a mesh network where each node is a bridge or router then you need extra software.
Tinkernut Thanks for replying and you are right. Silly me I forgot that Mesh is the most Flexible and is most ideal for internet which can't be possible with other topologies.

Is there anyway I can get my phone back up to speed ?
GHOST ANGELS
once ur data usage is high they lower the speed, you can upgrade ur plan or dont use ur phones 3g as much it should reset to faster bandwidth once u pay the bill
Tom Is a Door
Is there a way around that ?
upgrade your plan? but that means you will have to pay more for more data GHOST ANGELS
What do you use to edit/make your videos?
So the point is to establish networks and have them interact with other networks to form an internetwork aka internet?
True, but where is the internet coming from?
Thanks we need this now
The internet is just a Network of interconnected networks and sub-nets where protocol for packet forwarding makes this system addressable. All you can do is build onto the network, the internet isn't a thing you make its the result of what was made from a world wide perspective.
How accurate is ctu 24 jack Bauer is with there computer skills and software
are you going to ever release that video u mentioned at 4:53
I clicked the link and it says 403 forbidden
Raspberry Pi meshnet video still in the works? would love to see it
What about about 100% anonymous internet surfing? Anything think that is possible?
Thing is, If the internet as you say did spontaneously disappear, we wouldn't have your video as a resource for building a new internet. So, Unless people acted on this now, Its pretty useless.
As a hypothetical question though, Its a great response =)
Good point and the answer is people can download and for the foreseeable future store this very video and many others which is what we should be doing while we can right now so it can be re uploaded to another network or shared locally at any point when this internet we know is gone.
***** yeah its right, but even if they had the videos, they'd not be able to download the apps
I definitely need to get my videos on the darknet somehow. Maybe once I setup my Raspberry Pi CJDNS node, I can add a tinkernut site :-)
Tinkernut
It would be awesome to get a really in depth look at TOR...I play around with it but it sometimes but it seems like I'm missing something
