This was our winner from last week's videos poll. What shall we attempt to understand next by this 5th dimensional, space and time bending band of warlocks?
12/31/99 Sand>Quadrophonic Toppling. You're ready for it my dude. It's long, but I will watch every goddamn minute of it. You gotta do the >Quad topplings, it's a whole journey. It was played right in the thick of their legendary "Big Cypress set." When the clock struck midnight on NYE, signaling the beginning of the new millennium, phish began playing a nearly 8 hour set that would last until sunrise. In front of the biggest crowd on earth that evening, they took us phanners away on a journey through the greatest concert ever played. The sand>QT is what I consider to be their greatest jam from that evening. I've cried to it, I've headbanged to it, it's been the soundtrack of my life for years. A true "big build jam" they had all the time in the world and they weren't going to leave anything on the table. The QT outro is 100% genuinely sacred noise to me. The place they reach, the tone they find... THE PEAK. Close your eyes, trust the skipper, and it'll take you there!
Halley’s Comet 11/22/97 - it’s time. There’s a fantastic video on RUclips that will probably make it past blocks. ruclips.net/video/ry0L8tRV9bI/видео.htmlsi=pATuUN3BNYGiHk6z
11/22/97 Halley’s Comet You can find the video posted by Grateful Guitar The last major movement of that jam is some of the finest/most powerful improv ever played on stage. Just an absolute 1 of 1. We’re all very lucky they landed in that place and that it was caught on tape
Lee, you should react to Phish-Piper-Prague, Czech Republic 7/6/98 (19:50) posted by gdoucette1978. This will blow your mind. Trey shreds the whole song. “Machine gun Trey”
You understand all the reasons we love Phish! They are mind-blowing energy conductors, and we're lucky to bear witness. Next, Mike's > Hydrogen > Weekapaug When you have time, listen to the Guyutica set, set one 10.20.10.
Bro they definitely were! You could tell at the end 😂 I thought this was great. I guess everyone has favorites and such.. I get it lol. I’ll keep this one in mind for those thanks man
@@L33Reactsif I were you I'd listen to this whole album whether on the channel or otherwise not only to troll the people who don't like this year but also bc this is notoriously one of their greatest live albums next to ALO and Live Phish I think 11? (whichever has the Ghost you reacted to). As far as official recordings go I can't think of much on that level. Big Cypress New Year's 99/00 probably clears all 3 but theres never been an official release for it so finding recordings with good audio quality is tough.
You must do the Twist>Fukuoka Jam from this same show!!!! Some of the most psychedelic and mind bending music they've ever played. One of my favorite Phish shows ever, you would be in heaven. I feel like this Melt just gives a little hint at the spaces they find in the Twist when they come back from the set break.
My favorite thing about Phish is that they are a time machine. If I'm truly focused I might become a leaf getting carried down a stream, get hung up on a rock, then released, then down a mini waterfall, then land in a peaceful pool, then get picked up by the breeze, & finally fall to Earth in a meadow at dusk...& that may have been 3:18, but it felt like 45 min, or....30 seconds. I've never encountered another "band" do that to me. Then, the next song... is an entirely new experience. Trey's tone is like something I heard in the womb, & was reconnected to 17 years later (& that was 28 years ago). It's way beyond "band" or "phans" or comparisons. It's a on command escape time machine. It's no Taylor Swift, but its pretty good!
Doh, missed you live react but can't wait to listen to this split open and melt. I always listen to Twist from this show. Check that out when you have a chance!
You run into the Japanese phans here and there. A bunch of us helped one Japanese crew get unstuck from the mud after Coventry by lifting their little car out of it. I sat behind a Japanese family (guy wife and toddler age kids) at my 100th show at Jones Beach 2012. Everyone around us gathered thousands of glowsticks for the kids to play with. Literally PILED on top of them. I acted as translator in the lots after a 2014 Dick's show helping a Japanese phan score Molly. He was very nervous, i walked him thru the whole deal. Good times good times.... The Japanese phans are a BELOVED part of the family. Everyone treats them with extra love because of the effort it takes them to get to a show we take for granted.
Watching them all walk in with huge smiles on their faces was incredibly sweet, their love for Phish plain to see. It's one of those moments I will always remember fondly.
its 4am and ive been watching your phish reactions for a few hours. im so happy to be alive at the same time as phish. this band is a total anomaly in the music industry. the same 4 members have been playing together for 40+ years. they have had a couple hiatuses, but no lineup change. they arent on a major record label, they own the rights to their music (even taylor swift had to re-record her music to get the rights back), they aren’t on radio/promoted much by spotify and streaming services, they rarely are involved in the music festival circuit, and they’ve sold out MSG more times than anyone other than Billy Joel. Its right under America’s nose, but phish is such a multi-faceted beast that it will take culture at large quite some time to realize what they’ve been doing. bonnaroo and most modern music festivals were initially modeled after what phish was doing with their own music festivals in the 90’s. in my opinion, phish is the most punk band ever in terms of the ethos. they have managed to do all this by breaking every rule along the way but maintaining their authenticity and creative expression. that’s something so unique that it just cant be manufactured by the machine. i’ve seen phish over 150 times and its one of the best things in my life. one final thought ill share is that phish is a total duality game to me. big shadow, big light. you’re already hearing it expressed in the music, and that transcends to the entire experience. there is love, hope, joy and also fear, confusion and sorrow. phish gives me a potent dose of the exact same duality that life gives. there are some powerful messages in the lyrics. “surrender to the flow.” it’s the same beautiful dance of light and shadow that is present everywhere in life, and if I surrender I realize I can find presence and happiness like I had as a kid. i learn how much of the tension comes from my own resistance. thats what phish has helped me remember and hopefully has allowed me to contribute back to the world. welcome, the new fan is always the most important at the show and I can’t wait to see you in the crowd! edit: 98 has a lot to unpack. it bridges the 97 funk to the 99 ufo lift off jams. the 4 “island tour” shows in april 98 are legendary, “twist” on 4/2/98 has video and is one of the best of that run. for a better video, “down with disease” from their 12/31/99 new years concert at the big cypress indian reservation. they played from before midnight to sunrise. that show is considered by many to be the best show theyve ever played. pure bliss in this disease jam.
The band's jamming style took a turn from 97-00 where they went from largely high energy guitar based jams and introduced more groove based jams loving referred to as "cow funk". Split Open and Melt jams often end up in a wonderfully chaotic mess by the end. The extra measure of 5/4 in this song helps keep the listener off balance.
Wow, wished I'd known we were going on a trip, I would've packed a bag! This channel always keeps me learning and on my toes, so congrats to poll winner. This track did just that. Wonderful reaction, L33. Peace. I had my shrooms days, dipped in Uncle Dan's, because I hate mushrooms, ugh.
Stash>Llama>Wormtown jam wouldn't be a bad idea for him to check out. One of the GOAT stashes imo, only rivaled by the Stash→Manteca→Stash→Dog Faced Boy→Stash from 95.
The late 90s era was a kaleidoscope of jamming styles, ranging from psychedelic to funk to arena rock to ambient bliss, etc. What you’ve heard so far is definitely mellower than the 94 stuff but there are other jams that are completely bonkers at blistering tempos. The jamming palette in 99-00 was wide and deep
You really want the Simple from Dick's in 2014. Phish has it posted themselves and are pretty generous with the reviewe/ reacts. As somebody who first saw them in 91 and last saw them 5 months ago and 100+ times in between it is oneof my favorite clips of them live ever.
Split Open And Melt is my favorite Phish jam vehicle. The jam is in 17/16 time, and they toss that extra beat around between them like a beach ball. Trey gives a pronounced audible signal on his guitar to pull the jam back into the regular song structure at the end, if you listen to enough versions you can pick up on it. Split is a bit more elusive than some of their other cornerstone jam tunes. It's usually only played around twice per tour. It's more of a special occasion to hear one than, say, Bathtub Gin or Tweezer. More often than not it's a Set 1 closer. Hampton 1998 is my personal favorite version. Seek this one out if you're a fan of octave fuzz lead guitar. The whole band is smooth and creamy on this one. ruclips.net/video/W6wK17UTAUE/видео.htmlsi=XqbydJ6zIoMUzdUa
Love the analysis on this, always such beautiful chaos, brought back to center at the end around a sick finish, metaphor for life and and phish show lol

Weird show, weird year. They were running on fumes in 2000 but occasionally found another gear. This might be the most psychedelic Phish show ever played. I know a lot of people love the jams from this night but it’s never clicked for me. I’m sure other people have already posted this but, it’s f you liked this jam, check out the second set - you’ll likely lose your shit.
This reminds me of being at their shows and dancing jamming out, waiting for that big solo to come in and trying not to pre-anticipate it, like I’m ready to go hard you know. But don’t want to look foolish.😂
100% To be honest, I've never seen or heard a Melt better than the studio one. The horns and all the vocals are perfect and sorely missed when not there. It's like Julius without horns- it's just not as good.
I’ve been loving your phish reacts! Super well rounded pieces chosen from different eras, more jammy tunes, to more technical insanity. You’ve hit about all the marks a phish fan loves except for one, Gamehendge. It’s a series of tunes written to create a kind of rock opera. Gamehendge is the fictional land where Phish’s story titled The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday is set. I think it’s time for you to tackle it. Study up and split it into many videos if you have to, but I think it’s necessary. There are so many Gamehendge songs in Phish’s catalog, so they don’t play all of them on each rare occasion that they do a complete Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday. For that reason, make sure you pick a good one. I suggest Sacramento but I encourage others to recommend some other versions as well. It’s always a fan favorite and you won’t be disappointed. I’m pretty sure that you haven’t done any Gamehendge songs yet (except for the Divided Sky which usually isn’t included in the complete set). So far the picks have been solid so I trust whatever direction you want to go next with Phish. This is just my two cents
Hippy trippy magic carpet ride... This time you were so close to the song that explained to me what the word Bliss refers to. Twist from Japan, the climax of their psychedelic deranged era aronf the year 2000. Next if you please, Blaze on / Possum 8/22/2015 from Magnaball
Great points about the mix - this is something that I miss. This period you could hear everyone equally. Even these days it kind of irks me that Trey is so high in the mix. Also agree about mandatory spirit quests for all!
I love these reactions, and i'm largely inclined to recommend new songs. But I think a huge part of getting into Phish is listening to different versions of the same song. Like multiple legendary Tweezers, Chalkdusts, Ghost's, Gin's etc. But i'll be watching every one! I'm a bass player, and it's great hearing from the perspective of a drummer because Fishman is a monster.
That being said, please listen the 8/6/21 Deer Creek Simple! Or the 2/23/24 Mexico Chalkdust. Or the 8/30/24 Dick's Ruby Waves. All very versatile jams where the sound dynamically changes throughout multiple points. And all are available on RUclips as pro shots!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… 94/95 phish is phenomenal BUT also extremely chaotic. I feel that Trey became a much better listener starting in 96… with 97-00 being a peak era of differentiated jam styles and techniques… I’ll always prefer this era during 1.0 💯
I kind of like when he is apart of the mix and not just THE mix. Even though I love hearing him dominate I feel the band is better suited with him as he is here. But it doesn’t really matter what I think lol they are amazing either way. Thank you for watching bro!
Interesting choice….maybe the only one you’ve done where it’s not necessarily “all time” version and that’s cool, they don’t all have to be. Some are just great, like this one. I can assure you that other Melts are fucking out of control with dissonance and fire
Exactly 💯...I was like ehhh not too chaotic but decent...I think they started getting absolutely chaotic 2018ish until now. But hey just my opinion. Took my wife to her phirst concert 10-07-23 in Nashville and I heard the opening drums to SOAM and I leaned over and said buckle the phuck up. That one was chaos lol
You mentioned you haven't heard much from 2000 you also mentioned that it sounds a little late ghost... If you like this vibe you need to listen to more from the 2000s I suggest cross-eyed and painless which you might have seen my reasons why in your video last week. Cross-eyed and painless from Big Cypress without a doubt will not get blocked good video good audio. Also he might want to have the Charlie Rose interview.. it will make sense... And you will thoroughly enjoy it. I'll toss you another 10 next time around brother!
If your going to do a set from phish than do Clifford Ball, night 2, set 2, 1996. Relay it to your boy. One of there best sets to date. You got to hear this man. Will fucking blow you away
@@JamesDimond-l7u fortunately no one cares about your opinion. Being a phish fan would be so much better if people like you would go away. Old jaded 1.0 guy
Man, his recs started off so good. Who in God’s name would recommend this Melt, of all Melts? Someone who doesn’t know jack about Melts, that’s who. At least it isn’t Deer Creek ‘97. Sigh.
@@L33Reactsyeah but I’ll keep repeating the same thing in different ways. There are 1000 split open and melts, and 1000 of every phish song. You can def listen to whatever version you want in your own time, and of course it’s your channel, your choice, but I assure you, as a massive fan, you will lose fans and the momentum of the phish reactions will die out if you choose middle-rate versions. This version might sound good to you, but to those of use who’ve listened to and studied Phish, listening to the 203rd best version of something is actually unenjoyable. You would never do the same with another band. You would almost always try to listen to the best version first. The album version for most bands. Once you know the “best” version, or in Phish’s case, once you know the best 5-10 versions, you can venture into more obscure stuff, just knowing it’s not as enjoyable by as many people watching. Think about it like sports. The highlights are what you watch. There’s a million phish shows just like a million sports games. The highlights are what you seek out.
Not a big fan of SOAM. The music doesn’t sound like it flows together to me. I know it’s an unpopular opinion though lol. I’d love to hear Haley’s comet next :)
It might, but I had never heard a 2000 song before so I was curious. I thought it was good. Reminded me of 99 a lot. And their on “shrooms” come on man lol you wouldn’t be curious as a new fan either ?
The first half of 2000 specifically contains some of the best jams of all time from any band. You're a mad man. The Pinnacle of improvisational music is Phish 94-2000 (and some phases of 03/04), next to the Grateful Dead, Miles Davis post-In a Silent Way, Hendrix and the Allman Brothers Band.
99-2000 were unique years. Pardon the pun but they were very melty, ambient, and like Lee mentioned in the video, deep in the pocket. They would really get locked in and quick. I noticed when they came back in 2009 that was something they had to find again, though it didn't take long. I wouldn't say this period was bad, but it was a shift from the barn burner 90s shows. There were some gems in this period, with flashes of genius before the wheels fell of in 2004, but it was an interesting period for the band for sure.
This was our winner from last week's videos poll. What shall we attempt to understand next by this 5th dimensional, space and time bending band of warlocks?

I spent hours with "Rift" in the headphones. It, along with "Billy Breathes", still amaze me.
Great choice this week!!
ditto
" I slip and bumped my head and raise a weld split open and melt"
Something that could happen when you get off the tilt whirl! 😂😂
Gotta love when it's melty in the middle.
PRAUGE PIPER. anyone else think this is peak shred?
Thanks Lee you just reminded me how good this show is I've got to download it again
This reminds me of being at their shows and dancing jamming out, waiting for that big solo to come in and trying not to pre-anticipate it, like I’m ready to go hard you know. But don’t want to look foolish.😂
Phish saturday! ❤ 🐟
Someday try a version of this tune from ‘22-24 - pure psychotic madness, outside of time and space.
the studio version is worth checking out there's a horn section and female backing vocals on the "melt split open and melt" parts
100%
To be honest, I've never seen or heard a Melt better than the studio one. The horns and all the vocals are perfect and sorely missed when not there. It's like Julius without horns- it's just not as good.
@@randomperson-dy6kj much like ive never heard or seen a better Gumbo than the A Live One version the horns add so much.
Twist from Uniondale 1998 Island Tour!!! It’s a must
It's more than time to listen to STUDIO ALBUMS... It will bring you elsewhere and you'll be hooked for life.
Top 5 show, for me. And I'll echo a number of comments; Fukuoka Twist->Jam.
Love this era
"I'm in love bro".
Please check out the Island Tour Roses. 4-3-98. Absolute masterpiece and IMHO, their single greatest body of work
You need to listen to the full show, 2nd set is otherworldly 🔥
You need to listen to entire show all the way through, and I recommend 2/20/93 Roxy, Atlanta, GA
That Roxy Reba is the titties
You're authentic. We like you. Try an Eshter.
Keep on phishin’ brother!
1.0 Trey was our god!
Take them at a show! It's the greatest 🙌 🍄
Let’s get funky.❤
#makephishevilagain is all I can say at the 10 minute mark.
If your going to do a set from phish than do Clifford Ball, night 2, set 2, 1996. Relay it to your boy. One of there best sets to date. You got to hear this man. Will fucking blow you away
Great suggestion. Every note of that set is burned into my soul.
happy phryday people!
Should've been the Fukuoka Jam #1 from this show, not the Melt.
🕺
Do the simple>catapult>meatstick 9-5-21 love this jam sequence
When are you going to start reviewing the Doobie Brothers?
But have you read the book?
This is a highly unlikely request from my phriends.
Petrichor from Big Boat.
Send that request to the band as well 😂
Week 12 of requesting carini 7/26/23
2023 blowes compared to 94...may your request be permanently ignored
Kinda harsh but yeah
@@JamesDimond-l7u fortunately no one cares about your opinion. Being a phish fan would be so much better if people like you would go away. Old jaded 1.0 guy
The first Carini was ‘97 and to suggest the song was in its prime in the 90s is absurd. A modern Carini is a very legit suggestion.
@@mutoneon thank you for your support haha. I was at this show and think it’s the best carini of 4.0 imo. Tired of these jaded 1.0 dudes
Man, his recs started off so good. Who in God’s name would recommend this Melt, of all Melts? Someone who doesn’t know jack about Melts, that’s who. At least it isn’t Deer Creek ‘97. Sigh.
Omg...i totally agree...im like WHY?? lee gon see and then we get justice
Studio Melt is the place to start. It’s so damn good and they just can’t recreate the awesome vocal harmony part live.
I mean bro, you gotta branch out and see the different eras man. I picked this cuz they were on shrooms apparently. It’s not that heavy lol
Not only is this a bad take, you didn't even bother to suggest a "better" version lol
2000 blowes compared to 94...youll see
It might, but I had never heard a 2000 song before so I was curious. I thought it was good. Reminded me of 99 a lot. And their on “shrooms” come on man lol you wouldn’t be curious as a new fan either ?
@@L33Reacts i guess so...just sadd lol
The first half of 2000 specifically contains some of the best jams of all time from any band. You're a mad man. The Pinnacle of improvisational music is Phish 94-2000 (and some phases of 03/04), next to the Grateful Dead, Miles Davis post-In a Silent Way, Hendrix and the Allman Brothers Band.
7/24/93 Great Woods as honorable mention
99-2000 were unique years. Pardon the pun but they were very melty, ambient, and like Lee mentioned in the video, deep in the pocket. They would really get locked in and quick. I noticed when they came back in 2009 that was something they had to find again, though it didn't take long. I wouldn't say this period was bad, but it was a shift from the barn burner 90s shows. There were some gems in this period, with flashes of genius before the wheels fell of in 2004, but it was an interesting period for the band for sure.
