Disney is buying Fox, so does that mean it's time for the Original Trilogy to finally be released to the masses? We break down what we know from a legal standpoint, and from George Lucas' own requests as well.

That’s great that Kathaleen wants to honor George’s words but I feel there’s nothing wrong with having both the Special and Theatrical cuts as options for future generations to compare and contrast.

Totally agree. I think having the original cuts be available also pays respects to the makeup, costuming, set, creatue, and VFX teams that worked on the original films. That was groundbreaking work for 1977, and it deserves to be seen. - d

I hate the Jabba scene in “A new hope”. The cgi is horrible. They retread the dialogue of the previous scene in the cantina and Han stepping on his tail to get around him would’ve been a death sentence. I know why they did it. There was a guy playing the part of Jabba. The whole thing is very “maclunkey”.

I've still got the watchable DVD's they released years ago at least. Sorry George...I don't have to resort to VHS. They aren't the best quality, but Han does shoot first.

Please do that, Disney. You may upset George Lucas (who made those edits) but you'll get plenty of praise, if not a lot of praise from fans that will want this to happen. And this is just something for me but I wonder what it would be like to get Yoshitaka Amano (responsible for making art for Japanese media like Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D) to make box arts for Star Wars movies. As I said, it's just my idea and you guys don't have to agree.

    Lucas will be pissed

Kathleen Kennedy will be lucky to still be heading Lucasfilm by September. If she's gone, all bets are off.
Disney has a desperate need to mend fences with pissed-off fans, and this is a sure way to do that. All they would have to do is release a dual blu ray set of the OT with one completely unaltered, and another "enhanced" but not "specialized." So the second disc would have matte lines removed and other modest tweaks to make the film looks its best in high def, but have all the stupid shit removed. Han would still shoot first, but there would be no CGI Jabba, no goofy Mos Eisley CGI cluttered drive into port and so on...
For the price Disney is paying for 21st Century Fox, they are going to want to monetize their investment and use the assets to right the listing ship that is Lucasfilm.
