  • Another piece from the Cavalcanti Lute Book, La
Spagna is often played together with the Canon. In
fact, both pieces begin with the same melodic line,
which was not uncommon at the time. La Spagna
(Spain) has a free and improvisational style to it.
Guitar 2 plays a steady chordal accompaniment
while guitar 1 plays a flowing melodic line that covers
the original whole extension of the lute. It was
common to repeat this piece twice and on the repeat
to improvise free variations on the melody. For a
bit of fun, if you wish you can repeat the piece and
exchange parts for the second time through.
This video is performed by Dave Belcher and Nicoletta Todesco and recorded at Yale University by Matthew LeFevre and Benjamin Schwartz.
The piece is part of the Grade 3 material of the Classical Guitar Corner Academy Curriculum. Learn more about Classical Guitar Corner Academy here: www.classicalg...
