This is so cool ! I am coaching a basketball camp at the aviator sports Center and as I arrived I knew this place had to have been an old airport. As I started doing research I found all of this out and I am so mind blown! I can’t believe I’m on the same grounds of something so historic!!
Thanks very much for posting this. All those years I've lived in Brooklyn (I've even drilled with the Naval Reserve at the "White Elephant" building) and I was never able to get into the tower or even join a tour of the place. This field is so rich in history. Too bad the runways were being destroyed. I remember years ago when WWII planes used to land every Memorial Day. Again.. thanx! :)
I drove past the field 10,000 times as my dad drove me to Riis Park, I ALWAYS wanted to go in and explore but was never permitted. Still feel partially empty as it always remained a magical mystery.
I was born and raised in Queens and flew C-119's with the NYANG out of this field in the 60's. We did not know about the boarding tunnel. I currently fly out of Floyd Bennett Memorial field in the Adirondacks.
You're quite welcome. Yes, the tower felt sanctified from its historic heritage, despite its decrepit condition. I understand from the New York Times article this summer that it is undergoing rehab. Glad you liked it! Now if we could just bring back Dubrow's!

Amazing stuff, yes?
I was raised in Belle Harbor! 10 minutes from Floyd Bennet Field. Thanks for the history lesson.
