This is so bad because I love going to malls and I feel like online shopping is taking over in a bad way.

Me too. Especially for shopping for clothes. Each store has its own range in sizes because of vanity sizes. If companies where more consistent based on inches or centimeters that they used, it wouldn't be so much of a hassle to shop. You can't touch the weight of fabrics through a screen.

As there hasn’t been a new one built since 2006! So it’s been dying almost 20yrs….guess you didn’t get the memo….malls….ruined a ton of old main streets…..which is beyond sad…..the past has a way of making the present the past…..

Rents are also crazy high, I'm sure small retailers are unable to keep up. We lost a couple of local restaurants we loved because they could not keep up with the rent increases.

My local mall just closed …. Was built in the 80”s…. First We lost the anchor stores … Sears, Bon Ton, and Macys…. Then we lost the popular filler stores like old navy , American eagle and yankee candle… then all the shoe stores left …. Then this year they shut it down… JC Penny and FYE are operating still as standalone stores on the property.
The main reason we lost so many stores was the rent. Simon properties raised it so high that during covid they lost over half of the malls stores.
Oh and I should add that terrible property management and upkeep is a huge factor in why stores leave malls…. A leaking roof and mold is the reason we lost the cinema and that was a huge loss …. The malls owner was obligated to fix it and they never did…. So many malls have leaks and mold that never get fixed

My mall opened on Sep 19, 1985 and is still thriving with over 220 stores, AMC Theater and Round1 Bownling. It has been a popular tourist attraction. This is Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge, VA

My childhood mall, which was built in 1978 closed at the end of March of this year. The mall went through a series of ownership’s, and each new ownership never really put any upgrade in the mall. Then in 2019 three of the four anchor stores closed for good leaving only one final in the last anchor store closed in January which sealed the faith of the rest of the mall. Supposedly they are going to re-develop the mall beginning next year.

Adding Grocery, medical, and housing to malls would be life saving for the malls.

That's exactly what my local mall started doing 6yrs ago.
      It was built in 1975...
Lost a ton of business to two newer malls being built 19yrs ago....now those malls are slipping and my local‐mall is in it's Renaissance.

So sad malls in the US are on a steady decline.
In our country (The Philippines), malls are treated like parks where people come to chill, not just buy stuff.
Our local mall is always jam-packed during the weekends. It can accommodate up to 1000 vehicles yet during the weekends it's a pain in the ass looking for a parking spot.

Well I guess it has something to do with time. People in other nations they have time to stroll around malls while here in America people are just working all their lives to keep up with the bills, no more time to have fun.

I think if they would make the malls look colorful and retro too it would appeal to people. Malls used to have events. The one mall by me added condos in the space where our sear was. Thank god the Macy's n jc penny are still there. My mall Also has aspects of the 80s/90s still which brings in the tiktok n IG 80s kids. That's saving it. But there are empty stores. Its sad.

We got 4 shopping malls up here in Anchorage.
1 of them is abandoned, 1 of them has maybe 5 years left and 1 has probably 10 years before it goes kaplump.
Shopping malls are one of my favorite things in this world

The American mall was something to uphold back when I was a kid. It was like an amusement park to me to get everything you need with food and entertainment under one building nowadays Amazon eBay, and every other online shopping site has taken its place.

  • @Jhihmoac
    @Jhihmoac 11 месяцев назад +5

Thanks to Amazon and other online shopping sites, malls are fast becoming things of the past... That, and the high rents mandated by some of these big property management and property holding corporations, which do not bother to maintain some of these now crumbling, leaking 40+ year-old buildings... Food Services and Retailers can no longer afford these spaces any longer, so they either close the location, or move to smaller, slightly cheaper strip malls...

I will say amazon is more convenient. I hate that malls are disappearing but allot of people like myself are working 60 hours a week to make it and allot of people just don’t have time or the gas to go to malls. Another thing is inflation is making people’s disposable income disappear!

Online shopping has changed the way Amerian shops. The big department stores JCPenney, Macy and formerly Sears realized they don't need to be everywhere at every mall across the country. They've had to change the way they do business to attract customers to their physical brick and motor stores as customers don't go to malls and stores as often as they used to before the 2000s

Another theory is that the US is overmalled, where i live, there are 5 malls within a 50 mile radius trying to compete with each other and only 2 of them are thriving, an outlet mall and the largest mall of the other malls. It's not smart building malls that close to each other to kill the other malls.

I mostly go to malls for clothes only. Yet I even order online if I know the size I order fits due to pass try ones when at the mall. But that is mostly cause I live 30-60 min away from the mall. Otherwise i b at the mall more for clothes than buyin online

American malls are the Titanic taking on water. The question is, when will they sink? People who grew up in the cyber world have no nostalgic or sentimental connection to malls. May our favorite malls rest in peace.
