Jack London: The Call of Survival

  • Jack London was arguably America’s first celebrity author. His life, though short, was one of adventure and often controversy. He was a poacher, a failed gold miner, worked in a cannery, spun jute, and rode the rails as a hobo, all before reaching the age of eighteen. He became a world-famous writer, an outspoken advocate for animal rights, workers’ rights, eugenics, socialism, and atheism. His work as a writer made him fabulously rich, and he flaunted his wealth shamelessly.
    A lifelong unashamed love of drinking led to his admitted addiction to alcohol, and a frank discussion of alcoholism in his memoir/novel John Barleycorn. London wrote of the titular character, a euphemism for whiskey, “He gives clear vision, and muddy dreams. He is the enemy of life, and the teacher of wisdom beyond life’s wisdom”. In his book, he gave a new term to the English lexicon, describing the drunkard, whom, stupid with drink, “…falls frequently in the gutter, and who sees, in the extremity of his ecstasy, blue mice and pink elephants”. Seeing pink elephants has been a metaphor for drunkenness ever since.
    London’s work was marked with a realism the reader often sensed and the writer had often experienced. His most evil character, the sadistic sea captain Wolf Larsen in The Sea Witch, was based on a seafarer he had known in his youth. The Yukon characters of White Fang and The Call of the Wild were based on people he knew during his own adventures in the north. Though he exuded a hale and hearty appearance, his health was often frail, and he was subject to several illnesses, most of them aggravated by his chronic drinking. He rose from rags to riches, though he never lost sight of the rags.

    Just a note on Audio: I've since changed to a Blue Yeti mic, as the Lav mic has been having some issues. Sorry about the audio issues, we did our best to clean it up. Future recordings will be much better (as I just got an awesome new lens for my DSLR as well).

    THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT : Simon Whistler no longer presents this channel. This seems unlikely to change any time soon, as Simon works on multiple channels. This channel has the intermediary presenter Karl Smallwood, who is currently taking a break. Eric is presenting in his place. Simon IS NOT coming back. I am sure it is hurtful and insulting for those who put in hard work on these videos, for people to continuously ask where Simon is, when these people are doing the work and every bit as well as Simon ever did. However, no one is tied to a youtube channel, so if you dislike the lack of Simon, I am sure you can just... stop watching? I promise, no one needs to know you will be unsubscribing, nor does anyone need to see insults about the current presenters' accent/presenting style etc. Be kind.

      I'm trying to be kind also mindful I can't know in advance if autism or something is involved in a case like this, but with all information you've tried to convey in hand, people displeased may want to inflict their displeasure on remaining team or owners preferably in a business/channel damaging way, also always possible unless owner isn't much of a business mind to scrape together resources to rebuy out channel and reinstate Simon or variations on those specifics even if current ownership is disinclined and immune to changes in mind or heart, etc etc (I would have thought obviously)

      I like Simon as well, but that doesn't mean he has to do every channel on RUclips. I ended up following Karl, and I enjoy his content very much. I even went out and bought a copy of Robocop. But really, we were all told this when the change happened. If people are complaining at this point, do they really care? If they cared that much, they would have seen the handover video. Not picked up a random video months after the event.

  • @djdrack4681
    @djdrack4681 2 месяца назад +1

    Lets point out that the core idea of eugenics...is a good idea, and ultimately WILL be implemented as we master genetics/gene therapy/artificial-human augmentation etc.
    IT WAS everything that happened around European Eugenics that was bad: w/ or w/o it, those atrocities would have been committed (indeed in the late 1800s there were genocides that were purely based in race/ethnic discrimination, before genes/etc were understood.)

    • @balabanasireti

      Even the point idea isn't good but creating a perfect species is impossible.
      We all have our own subjective views on what a perfect human would be like

    • @djdrack4681
      @djdrack4681 2 месяца назад

      the very nature of trying to 'cure cancer' or hereditary diseases = a form of eugenics: its attempts to remove certain genes from the gene pool: ones that cause various disorders.
      --> A gun in the hands of a honorable/ethical person = a tool for good
      --> A gun in the hands of a dishonorable/unethical person = a tool for evil.
      Its how the tool is wielded; AI, surveillance systems, public utilities, drones...its the same for countless tools/devices.

    • @balabanasireti
      @balabanasireti 2 месяца назад +2

      @@djdrack4681You make it sound nice but it was just an excuse to make one feel better than another ethnic group.
      Humans always wanted to become healthier and stronger even before eugenics

    • @djdrack4681
      @djdrack4681 2 месяца назад

      @@balabanasiretiThat is what it quickly spiraled into: But even post-WWII Europe showed that it is possible.
      Rates of genetic disabilities among children in central europe were lower (bcuz of what happened).
      The idea of filtering out blindness, mental disorders, etc = good. Forcing people = the defining characteristic when good intentions --> road to hell.
      Only thinking of eugenics (the philosophy of selective reproduction/gene therapy etc) as a NSDAP concept = flawed. US had its own Eugenics program, UK did, etc.
      Its like thinking of Transhumanism as ONLY bad bcuz right now, gov/megacorps would like to utilize it for $ and surveillance/control...
      When in fact transhumanist tech (IE storing mind in hard drive, printing a new body etc)...Is the only truly viable way we will colonize the galaxy and evolve past the possibility of extinction (and senescence)
