ABANDONED Corvette Stingray Will it Run and Drive? (Already registered in burnout competition!)

  • Through a subscriber, I purchased this 1980 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray that's been lying abandoned in a vacant lot for years site unseen way down in Tennesse. It's a one owner, L82, 4 speed, T-top that has had previous work done to it. Of course, I did the right thing before even laying eyes on it, and registered it in a burnout content in Florida! Will it run? Will I make it to the show? Will it even spin the tires? So many questions, A guy's head hurts.

In 1981 I was 17 working as a lot attendant after school at the local Chevrolet dealer when an 1980 Beige Mist Corvette was dropped off by a tow truck a foot in front of the back door of our sales office. It was a repo with no keys. Greaaat. After walking around that Corvette for a couple of months and constantly "reminding" our sole mechanic to fit new keys so we could at least move it I finally took matters into my own hands. I just started taking the column apart until I got down to the switch. As I was removing chunks a snarky salesman came by and told me there was an office pool started with whether I'd get it put back together or fired trying! Well, I got a new switch in and to celebrate I took it for a little 90 minute test drive to see if everything was working correctly. I forget who won the office pool but the next week I got "promoted" to work for the lead-assed mechanic I'd been bugging for two months to fix the Corvette. Greaaat....

Gene the mechanic (Gene Star, haha) turned out to be a pretty nice guy after all. I learned a lot and he let me use his tools but I was dirty and exhausted every night and decided college might be a better career path. While I worked there the Corvettes were way out of reach but I got first dibs on a few really rough 2 seaters that were taken in on trade (TR7, MGB, etc.). I'd get them running more or less and hang a For Sale sign on them in the middle of the parking lot at school. I actually made more money flipping those turds than I did as a part time mechanic's "helper".

It's a combination. He obviously thinks of the funniest stuff in advance and looks over the car before he films the final version. So the silly lines about smells etc. is all planned and then the other stuff is mostly genuine, except with a heavier, slower accent. You can hear his normal voice fairly often, especially when something actually surprises him.
But he knows his stuff. Every though he makes himself sound dumber than he is. Which is 80% of the reason people like the channel, because he doesn't come across as a know-it-all or self righteous. Really excellent strategy that has made him a millionaire.
The only problem I have is people believe he's poor and send him free things.

Exasperated me about those Vette's: yeah, gorgeous body, but in the cockpit you'd THINK they could've come up with a nicer, more impressive panel. That speedo was the same as my dad's 84 S10, same as my sister's 86 Cavalier, same as my 91 Cavalier. That's half of why American car manufacturers got their asses handed to them in those years - no imagination, shitty cars. The Japanese knew you had to have one or the other, and the Japanese had both.

The way this guy talks is so extremely practical, I just kept envisioning him like at a zoo sticking his fingers in the tiger's pin and the tiger bites off two of his fingers. He pulls his hand out and says, "well, I still have three more fingers. Who really needs five in the first place. There is no pain, but I am probably in shock and about to pass out. I'll see you guys in the next video if I am still alive. Don't forget to like and subscribe"!

Breaks my heart to see a Corvette just left to rot. My ex had 1979 Vette - the motor had been replaced by previous owner and it was equipped with nitrous for racing - nitrous kit was gone when he bought it but the engine still pumped 750 hp - so much power you could life the front end off the ground in second gear if you popped the clutch - man I loved that car - you could hear it rumble from 3 blocks away. Sure did miss it when it was sold but we had other plans and couldn't afford all the "toys" at the same time, and we'd easily go through $200 of gas in a day and that's when it cost about $.75 per litre in Canada - a US gallon is approx. 4 litres so it would be roughly equivalent to $3.00 per gallon - I dread to think what it would cost now as we're paying double that amount. It almost felt like every time we passed a gas station there was a huge magnet pulling us in.

There is a plaque on the dash that says only 500 were shipped to the USA. It's a Triumph or Datsun--I forget--GT6. My husband never even drove it. It went right into storage. I would love to get it fixed if it isn't too costly. The worst of it is it appears to have the firewall tore out. We are in our 70s now and probably can't even get in or out of it anymore. I had a friend (big weed user) borrow mine and he let it run too long and it disintegrated the glue holding his headliner up in his Nissan ( obviously not a problem in a T-Top Corvette) . Point is his headliner must have had an animal or plant based adhesive holding the cloth up. Do no more than twenty minute sessions with them and make sure to AIR IT OUT completely before the "smell test".

When you get home call your local Servicemaster, Servepro or other carpet cleaner that does water remediation. They can rent you a pro dehumidifier that will sort out all the smell and mildew issues in just one afternoon or over night.

yes,but there built wrong. o.k. std. or mild. mate wanted a dodge in his jag,but no mounts made,so he bought a 350. 010 block, threw all the rest of engine in bin, then re built it. had the heads re plug angled. allways ran hot. best engine, ford 460.. canted valves, more horses than chev, with std parts. here in aus. the [ chev ],holden guys, used to dream of ford heads. but, allways used a ford diff,,funny that..eh..i own a 340 r/t dodge,,so i dont care..

I've never had to deal with the old telescoping gm's. I hear they can be a real bugger. The wires and turn signal will pull out more, just got to be careful. Guess I'm talking to the wrong feller.

The definition of mind-boggling is something very confusing, puzzling or hard to comprehend. An example of mind boggling is the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle. An example of mind boggling is when an avid chocolate lover hears that someone doesn't like chocolate.

~ I always recommend marking the #1 cylinder & firing order rotation direction on the distributor old cap when replacing to a new cap.
~ NOTE: from what I remember about old early 1980's Ford Lincoln Continentals & old early 1980's Ford Mustangs is that they both shared the same distributor cap but with different firing orders & a different #1 position on the distributor, including reverse distributor rotation of each other. So it was easy to confuse a DIY'r having both cars at once, unless you had both the Chilton & the Hayne's manual. One usually mentions something the other doesn't so I tend to keep both manuals available.
