    Director: Jon M. Chu
    Written by: Winnie Holzman

    Producers: Marc Platt, David Stone
    Executive Producers: David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz, Jared LeBoff
    After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
    Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
    The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
    The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
    The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
    Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
    Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
    Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

      Same. I read the book, and when the play came to my area, I took my mom to go see the play. We had awesome seats 3 rows from the front, and just to the right of center. My mother loved it, as did I. I later found out that it was the first time she had been to a theater to see a play. It wasn't too long after that she lost her battle with cancer. If you haven't read Gregory Maguire's take on fairy tales, and other stories near and dear to our hearts, I highly suggest you give him a try.

      @giggles7179 2 месяца назад +14

      ....Dune, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Twilight: Breaking Dawn, The Matrix films. This is nothing new and it often just reeks of a cash grab. The one thing that sets _Wicked_ apart from the other films is that it's based on a property that already has a _runtime_ versus pages in a book. The question is whether this could actually be an instance where fans would prefer the filmmakers flesh the films out a bit and preserve as much of the songs from the stage production rather than butchering it to fit a two or a two-and-a-half hour timeframe.

    “Ozempic”, “Woke”, “Flop”, like literally shut up. This movie is going to blow everyone’s socks off. The people in the cast are the happiest they have ever been while filming this movie. They got their dream roles. You don’t have to be happy but let other people be happy. You’ll definitely be put in your place once this movie is a blockbuster.

  • @brennaflaherty8871

    I am SO exited for this movie, and the casting is great. Geff Goldblum as the wizard is probably the best casting choice they made(at least in my opinion), the only mistake in casting they made was with Fiyero and it's the same mistake Broadway has made in his casting all except 3 times in Wicked's 20 year run but Johnathan Bailey could still be a good Fiyero.

    • @OKellies
      @OKellies Месяц назад +1

      Johnathan Bailey has been doing theatre since before he did film and television. I think he is a fine choice for Fiyero.

    • @brennaflaherty8871
      @brennaflaherty8871 Месяц назад

      @@OKellies That's not why casting him for Fiyero was a mistake, and I do think he will do a good job. The problem that they made by casting him that Broadway has been making for all except 3 times in 20 years is getting a white person to play Fiyero when Fiyero is not white, and I am not blaming Johnathan Bailey for that. I have the book Wicked is based on(Life and times of the Wicked witch of the west), it's huge and I don't expect him to read that whole thing or look through the whole thing for Fiyero's description just for an audition, especially when, again, Broadway has been casting white actors for him all but 3 times in the 20 years of it's run. The people who are at fault for that are the people on the casting team who didn't do their research.

      The stage musical is great. I've only been able to see it twice, on tour.
      The book it's based on is spectacular. This looks like it has incorporated all the wonderful music and the fantastic story from the book.

    • @giggles7179
      @giggles7179 2 месяца назад

      @@ChristopherRuggles I'm sorry, but I have to say I very much disagree. I'm a lifelong fan of everything Oz, but I think the main reason I've yet to jump onboard the _Wicked_ train is because I really - _really_ - disliked the novel it's based on. I think it's a really overused trope at this point to take properties originally created for an all-ages audience and turn them gritty and realistic. Sometimes it works (as in the case of the Batman comics, for instance) and sometimes it just leaves a terrible aftertaste. The Oz books themselves have been mined for films, TV series, and other media that run the gamut from being surprisingly faithful but entirely too dark (Dorothy's electroshock therapy in _Return to Oz)_ to outright horrific (the McFarlane series of reimagined figures).
      With its allusions to Nazi Germany and the heavy political slant, Gregory McGuire's _Wicked_ took the story way too far out of the context I think most people hold of Oz. I've been told by several people that the musical uses the characters and the framework of the novel and improves upon it. I'm hoping that's true. I'm very much eager for the film (even if I find it _so_ unfortunately reminiscent of Sam Raimi's _Oz the Great and Powerful,_ which had interesting concepts but ended up merely being the film everyone was hoping _would have_ been _Wicked._
      In the end, please don't let my words here stop anyone from reading the novel - it's entirely up to one's personal opinions whether they'll enjoy it or not, but I do think it's worthwhile to acknowledge it's not as universally beloved as the musical based on it is.

I am unlikely to want to watch it until Act2 is also available, as no one wants to leave after Defying Gravity and wait until another day for the rest of the story ! Also, it seems strange casting people to be students who look so mature already ... maybe Elphaba will show more range and nuance in the movie than it appears here.
