Do you rely on the alum of the pot for the mordant? I've never not mordanted pre-dyeing but I am eager to try it now w/ all the walnuts around this time of year. Your top came out just lovely!
Thank you! I was just sort of experimenting with different mordants. I have used alum mordants in the past and had success. I used grape vine leaves in the hope that the tannins would help the dye along.
Walnuts have a great amount of tannins. I've seen letting the mixture ferment for months helps. Wool dyes better this way than cotton. Dark, rich brown => wool; lovely light tan => cotton.
