while in high school during mid 60's several classmates and I explored every cave we could find around Florence. We found what we called Coffee Cave which to the best of my memory was west of Florence but they was a trail you could drive to get close. It faced the Tennessee River. We also explored Georgetown Cave which was to the left of the Natcez Trace Bridge....I've found that the entrance is now gated. But, the most fascinating cave was one found by our leader on his short wave radio while talking to others. This cave was on 72W out of Tuscumbia heading west. It was, back then at least, in an area a few miles from anything and it was to the right of 72w. This cave had a small 3'x6' cats eye shaped opening going down and opened to a tremendous catheral with 2 main caverns off of the opening. It was as I recall 80' to 100' from the opening to the bottom. We bought a hemp rope 150' long...backed our leaders Corvair back 150'..tied a loop for a foot in the rope and as the Corvair inched forwards......down we went. None of us were really anxious to be the first to go down so in my juvenile brilliance I quickly thought "if the rope breaks it won't break on the first one down" so I volunteered. It was one of those things that as an adult I've looked back on many times and thought just how absolutely crazy it was, but we all survived. We had eight of us and went down in groups of 4. Once I was back on top and witnessed how the rope was smoking on the rigging we'd set up with logs to prevent rope rubbing the edges of the stone, I almost fainted. I would love to find someone who has at least seen this sink hole type cave as I'd love to see it on Google Earth. Can anybody help? Watching this video reminded me so much of our adventure. Thanks for sharing.
@pops1981 hey i know this is 4 yrs old but i figured id try to reach you anyway. I live in Florence and i would really like to talk to you about a cave i found a few miles from Coffee Cave. I asked a speleologist about it probably 18 years ago and he didn't know what i was talking about. If you see this please leave a reply and i will definitely respond back.

A cave underground??? How can this be???
LOL, that's what I was thinking. After all, by definition, a cave IS underground. 😂
