On average we get 4-5 eggs a day from our girls. Sometimes it goes to 3 rarely though. It adds up really fast! We do not wash them until we are ready to use that way they do not need to be refrigerated. I will wash them up and make sure they are still fresh just in case and we always rotate our eggs and use the oldest first. We also give the eggs away to our neighbor that are not quite a large egg.
You are so sweet to share with your neighbors. We keep our eggs on the counter top. We are getting 6 eggs a day right now, as our newest hens have just come to age and are finally laying. Love the baby blue eggs, so pretty. All ours are brown. Have a wonderful weekend, Rachel. Stay safe and well always ❤️🥰🙏
Good morning sweet friends! It is always a joy to hear from you! I imagine you go through yours a lot faster with Ashley baking all the time. That is one of her super powers ;) We are having a cold spell here today with some single digits. And I am debating on if I want to continue the 30 day no spend challenge or add some dried beans and rice to our pantry in case of uncertain times we may have coming.
I want to get some chickens one day. If you have a rooster in the bunch, would the eggs be fertilized? We stayed at a airbnb one time that had a hen house and we could if we wanted to have fresh eggs for breakfast. Hubby saw a rooster and he said he couldn't. Is that true?
Lovely Lisa I actually talked about it in the video but cut it out. So it works kind of like this...If a rooster is in with the hens he will be doing what God put him on earth to do ! 😉 After a hen lays an egg she will sing this song that lets the rooster know it is time. So if he does a good job their could eventually be a chick. However, many things have to happen after it gets fertilized and the hen lays the egg. Either you have a broody hen which we don't. Our hens were born around May 1st. Hens get broody as they get older. or you have to place the eggs into an incubator. We would like to get one so we can increase our flock one of these days. So we nothing happens to make it grow it wont. There is a RUclips channel about a man that hatches eggs. He bought some quail eggs at a supermarket and placed them into an incubator. 1 hatched. When birds of any kind are ready to have offspring the will keep laying in one spot and when they are ready they start siting on them. Ever wonder how a duck can lay 1 egg a day for 2 weeks then sit on them and 30 or so days later they all hatch at once. It is because they do not develop until they are kept warm. So if you cracked open a fertilized egg in a bowl next to an unfertilized one it would look exactly the same. When incubation begins you hold the egg to the light to see if life has begun so many days after you start the process. Then you can see which ones are fertilized. Somewhere on RUclips I believe there is a video where a school did an experiment and somehow took fertilized eggs and removed them from the shells but were still able to hatch them. I will have to look for it for you!
