I think it is kind of a catch 22 on the gold farm verses character farm (at least for a F2P). Kinda need to get the characters strong enough to get to 4-1. Currently I only have 5 light/5 shadow and all at 30. I am only really gearing the ones I plan on using the most though. At least until I get the teams I want to take to endgame. Even though, that probably will change as the game does.
On a different note, about the gear for gold. In my opinion, the gear for 500g would be better than wasting 6-18 energy (maybe more) on trying to get that item. The 2300 items I'd say no. I haven't done the math, just what I have noticed. I believe I have even went at least 5 time (that's 30 energy) before getting one that I needed. Like you said. I could spend 8 energy on 4-1 and get 500g along with other items.
The gold is scarce, but as you said, it's only the first week. What do people expect, to be able to upgrade all characters to max levels right away without working for it?
One little note is that if you do need green gear, you can minimize the gold potential loss by farming them on hard nodes where available, as some of it does pop up on the first couple hard nodes. Obviously this is more applicable to lvl 30+, but figured I'd mentioned it.
The wall you hit at lvl 33+ is crazy!!
I accidentally dropped 70k leveling up a character because that goes to max level all the time, but other time it's stops in the middle. Hopefully in the long term it doesn't matter

I’m that little bit behind so I have a little bit longer to save up my gold, I have around 600k at level 28 so I’m hoping I’ll be okay for a little while

do you still have 600k? I am at the same point as you and I have 700k. I only lvl 5 characters
