DESCRIPTION:
The Pomposa abbey located in the municipality of Codigoro in the province of Ferrara is an abbey dating back to the 9th century and one of the most important in all of Northern Italy. It was of great importance for the conservation and dissemination of culture during the Middle Ages, thanks to the scribe monks who resided there. In this abbey the monk Guido d'Arezzo conceived the modern musical notation and fixed the name of the musical notes. In 1653 Pope Innocent X suppressed the monastery, which in 1802 was bought by the Ravenna-based Guiccioli family. At the end of the nineteenth century the property passed to the Italian state. Very high compared to the rest of the building (48 meters), the bell tower dates back to 1063 in Romanesque-Lombard style and recalls that, of about 75 meters, of the Abbey of San Mercuriale in the nearby Forlì.
The interior of the church has three naves, divided by Roman and Byzantine columns. The precious marble floor in opus sectile dates back to various eras (from the 6th to the 12th century) and features monstrous animals, geometric motifs, vegetal and figurative elements. On the walls there are 14th century frescoes from the Bolognese school, with stories from the Old Testament, the New Testament and John's Apocalypse. On the counter-façade, a representation of the Last Judgment. In the apse there are frescoes by Vitale da Bologna, depicting Christ in majesty with angels and saints, and, below, Evangelists with their respective symbols, Doctors of the Church (on the right) and Stories of Sant'Eustachio with his conversion and martyrdom (below on the right the saint is martyred, inside a red-hot bronze ox). Christ in majesty within the almond is blessing and holds in his left hand the book with the words "pacem meam do vobis". To the right of the Redeemer is depicted, with a very precious dress embroidered in gold, the Virgin Mary presenting the patron abbot Andrea while with his left hand he holds the scroll with the inscription "tuam fili clementiam", a recommendation for the community of Pomposa and for humanity. In the left aisle in 2000 was placed a relic (a tibia) of the Pomposian abbot San Guido whose remains are found in the church of San Giovanni in Speyer in Germany and which was donated to the abbey by the bishop of the German city. Abbot San Guido died in Fidenza in 1046, while he was traveling to Pavia to participate in the synod called by the German Emperor Henry III. By the will of the emperor, his body was buried in Speyer.
